Use Vertical FOV for Ultrawides.

  • Hello,

As far as I know, the now-patched Steam glitch basically allowed the player to set the game's engine to use the FOV value vertically rather than horizontally. This is a perfect solution accepted among basically every other PC game.

I have seen the threads about this in the past. I am not requesting a wider FOV, change the FOV slider to set your vertical FOV and have the same limits it does now. So a 4:3 player would see less horizontally at max FOV and a 21:9 player would see more, and a 16:9 would stay the same.

This will fix the problem with ultrawides where the game gets vertically cropped. This is a game about boats, boats make people seasick, and limiting players to an effective ~50 FOV on ultrawides is not a balancing decision, it's an accessibility nightmare. In games that use a vertical FOV usually with a cap at 90, people will purposefully stretch 4:3 resolutions onto 16:9 monitors, or just run 16:9. Ultrawides aren't considered an advantage for the top esports FPS players, and SoT isn't exactly trying to be that anyways. Please give ultrawide players the ability to play this game without experiencing the misery of a cropped, super low FOV.

  • I don't know the details of Rare's stance towards this, but can confirm what OP mentioned regarding other games.

I used 4:3 for CSGO as it would make heads a lot bigger and gave a lot better visibility in long distance firefights. Especially for weapons without a scope. Quite a few pros, especially the OG ones used this as this was a native resolution back in the day and they got used to it too much.
The graphics looked miserable in comparison.

  • I never realized it had a different effect on different resolutions, usually games auto adjust that, but since im on the typical 16:9 screen ratio, it looks fine to me, if it does cut off the screen at other aspect ratios then thats definitely something that could use a little work.

  • Rare somehow thinks a 100 or 105 fov, that many modern games use on PC, is "distorted" and not a good idea. The higher fov is already used in game, while your character is sprinting. I would be perfectly happy to be able to just disable the higher fov on sprinting and use the higer fov thats no on while sprinting constantly.

SoT is the only game I feel like im playing trough tunnel vision and it gives me eye strain and headaches if I play longer. No game with a higher fov causes this.

We no longer play with 20 inch screens and PC players dont sit down at a couch and look at the screen at farther distance, so a higher fov is more natural when the screen is viewed much closer than while couch gaming.

I'm sad that it will never change and that people who break TOS and use some sort of third party tools to get a higher fov get to play comfortably, while some of us will never be able to.

  • It would be great if Rare researched the effects of FoV instead of being stubborn about it due to a very old exploit that never gave anyone any advantage.

Im especially baffled by the hypocrisy, Rare always reminds us to give ideas on how to bring more accessibility features to the game but for some inexplicable reason FoV adjustment is off the table, even though its one of the most widely spread accessibility problems for the player base.

Everyone on the forums loves to repeat how the DA sails extra vision gives no advantage, while a much more insignificant (and optional) change like higher FoV is somehow supposed to give people superpowers.

It's about time to stop holding the game's technical abilities back for literally no justifiable reason.

  • @meroviel said in Separate Audio-Hints from InGame-Music:

With regards to FoV - We work directly with Microsoft who have some of the strictest accessibility tests to pass, along with one of the most highly trained accessibility teams in the world. We passed all the requirements with the game designed at 90 FoV and will not be changing that. We continue to work with them to add further accessibility to SoT.
