I think being able to share a ship between a group of friends and any of the crew could start it and could only be used by a specific group of people because me and my friends always argue over who's ship to use
shared captained ships
This is a fantastic idea.
Creating a club crew and having a shared pool of ships to sail on is awesome.
You'd have to almost make the ship purchase, repair, cosmetic save, and supply costs divide equally and deduct from each clan member's account.
What would the club crew size cap be, though? Somewhere between 4 and 8 players seems like the right number... And are non-club members allowed to sail on these ships? Or are they effectively closed crew to anyone except club members?
There's a lot of finer details to work out, but at a high level this is a great idea.

@lem0n-curry it would be only a certain group of people
So for example, you and three friends can "own" the same Galleon; all four can set sail separately (with three of their other friends) and the ship will gain 4 times the milestones... Doesn't make sense. It's no longer one ship.
@lem0n-curry make it so only one instance of the ship can exist at a time. So if another player is using it than the others cannot use it.

In which case, my original points stands:
Well, then you can start arguing who gets to sail it with another crew ...
@lem0n-curry But that's still better than the current system and it would be first come first serve. This way at least no matter what your ship is getting progress.

My ship will be getting progress while I'm not sailing on it ? Then it's no longer my ship.
The OP wants it so they won't argue whose ship to use. If one of the crew uses the ship with others and the other three also wants to set sail they can't use it, this solution won't stop them arguing ...
@lem0n-curry I mean that's a compromise to make. And hey make it so the OG owner can revoke rights if someone abuses.
It's still a much better solution than what is currently implemented.
This is the type of fix that can only be a benefit for people even if it is not for you. In no way will this change make your experience worst you can chose to ignore it entirely.
This change is only a plus I get there are some flaws and every solution will cause problems but why be opposed to fix that's a net positive. Worst case don't use the feature if YOU don't like it.

Wouldn't that be the same discussion as there is now when someone proposes a kick-from-crew feature. You're helping for weeks, months, maybe even years to gain milestones for the ship you 'co-own', and all of a sudden you're getting replaced and no longer sail on a ship that has any progress.
Really think that is better than, for instance, having a ship where the crew only sailed for a quarter of the time on ?
I doubt it will be a net-positive solution.
@lem0n-curry here is the difference you have to opt into this. You need to accept and use someone else's ship so better be with someone you trust. You can keep playing the game without using this feature whatsoever and keep play how you play right now. Kick from crew you automatically opt into for playing the game with ANY crew. This feature does not do this at all.
There are no negatives here if you don't want to use the feature you are not forced into using it. You can ignore it fully once again just never captain a ship that is not your own no one can force you to captain someone else's ship, unlike kicking once again that affects you no matter how you play.

Lot of pressure from crew mates though - who might not want to join your ship if you don't make them co-owner or don't make you co-owner of their ship unless, or choose other people as their co-owners.
As soon as it's there, it cannot be ignored, and it won't do anything about arguing within crews who can't make the current situation work for them.
@lem0n-curry Lot of pressure to raise emissary even if you don't want to...
Just don't play with those people. No one can force you to share ship, and even if you do you can revoke it at anytime. The current situation quite literally does not promote crew based progression which goes against the spirit of the game. This proposed change would be a huge net positive for those of us who play with committed crews, and a net neutral for those who do not.
@avacado71 at the end of the day ship milestones barely matter. once you get to 50 in a category you have unlocked all the stuff for the boat. The big milestones are player based for sailing on a captained ship.
Focus on player milestones not ship milestones.
