Was it a chest of the damned or just a regular one?

Yeah, you can see the seabed when swimming down to the sunken kingdoms but ibwas thinking about the ground under the water near the islands as well. It'd be a bit more of a challenge to destroy a mermaid gem if they were actually protected by ocean crawlers, of course the green and red ocean crawlers are melee so having them walk around on the seabed might be a bit redundant but the blue ones have range, alternatively Rare could up the spawn of Sirens around mermaids gems too, personally I never see them nearly enough as I think we should.

Those are merely localized illusions of a sea bottom existing everywhere

@galactic-geek Is that a new mechanic? Or was it just great timing of digging and phantoms spawning that would've spawned regardless of digging a chest up?

@sailorkek There is no global seabead/seafloor, its only local to the shrine, island or rock you are exploring at the time. This is why you have mostly sharks and sirens when you linger in the waters long enough for them to start spawning on you.

I know there is no global seabed?
All I mean is the ocean crawlers should be semi aquatic in that they should be able to go further off shore than skeletons and phantoms but thats not the point of the thread so I'll say no more about it

Pretty sure it's the former.

Usually the phantoms spawn on the way back to the ship. I haven't seen it yet
