What ship to use

  • So me and the wife just picked up the game a day ago we've been using the sloop but I'm starting to wonder if the ship above that would be better. Neither of us are good with dealing with boarders or boarding and I feel like the extra cannon would be more beneficial to us than the mobility the sloop provides. Any tips or suggestions?

  • @sniffiesttuba26 if it's just the 2 of you I'd still recommend the sloop. But feel free to try the brig out. It's not difficult to run it with 2 people as well.

  • Generally speaking, your best bet is going to be to use the smallest ship your crew can fit on; if it's just the two of you, the sloop will usually be the best option.

While only having one cannon on each side seems like it might be limiting, that's a great chance for one of you to repair, steer, try to fend off boarders, or even go over and board the enemy ship yourself.

And if you really need that extra cannon, you can dock a cannon rowboat to the back for the extra firepower

  • the bigger the ship the more experience and effort required for proper maneuvering and fighting

You can always try and open crew or get a crew mate for a brig but I would build a foundation as a solid sloop duo

it takes a lot of time but you have the advantage of playing with someone you know and trust and can communicate with

    I'd stick with the sloop

skill comes in time and effort

what is important to remember is to always value her as a crew mate. you will sink many many times, you never fail until you sink those that ride with you with blame or some form of significant impatience.

You need each other out there. Take the losses, take the pain, learn and grow as a crew.

Work on efficiency. Do what makes sense for you and your goals.

The sloop is enough, it just takes time, effort, and reps

You can message me anytime if you have questions about specifics as the issues arise or post here and I'll probably see it.

You are very new, that is never a weakness it is an opportunity to grow. You are going to lose a lot of fights, it will all work out and make more sense later down the road. No hurry, no rush, no deadline. Just play and experience will be earned.

Beware that some AI opponents scale with ship-size: e.g. the Kraken is a lot harder with 2 on a brig than with 2 on a sloop.
In a fight on a brig, you got to be careful that it doesn't sink in a few seconds so bailing & repairing gives you hardly any benefit from 2 cannons after the first volley.

  • For a close quarter and easy to defend with two players. Sloop.

Brig with only two players can still manage but everything is further apart. Still about the same and slightly more management required.

    Take your pick

  • As a semi-noob myself, I’d definitely say sloop. It’s easier to keep afloat, which you will definitely appreciate in the heat of battle. Until you get some sea legs you’ll never miss that second cannon but will thank the Pirate Lord that you only have to run a couple of steps up the ladder to bail (and only a couple of steps over to get more cannon balls).

And definitely heed @wolfmanbush ’s advice; it will stay fun as long as you laugh (or cry) together at your collective (mis)fortune but nothing will kill the joy faster than either laying on the guilt or feeling guilty over mistakes or lack of skill. I know, my crew is my 2 14-year-old sons who are not always gentle with me 😁

Edit:which is not to say that they are not wonderful crewmates but my Zen-bag is much fuller than theirs when frustration rears its ugly head.

  • Try everything and experiment a lot. I solo sail the galleon so...I am the self proclaimed best "sailor" here. I can handle the ship in storm or on fire. Repel boarders, especially with blunderbombs. I sink pvpers too. Storms and forts are your friend. You sail long enough and nature helps or kills you. Such is life. But nothing like a kraken or Meg to partner with

  • @lem0n-curry kraken is easy if you keep calm. I recommend drop your anchor so you control the pace not the kraken. When it hits you you can get knocked strangely.

There's a rhythm that gives you a lot of down time fighting the kraken.

    Hi!

The sloop is tanky and will take a lot of damage before it's a problem. It's slow and doesn't have as many barrels so precision is rewarded. PvE non human threats are easier. The mast takes 2 chainshots instead of 1. You can outrun both the Brigantine (it requires precision and favourble currents) and the Galleon by going into the wind, with sails perpendicular to your keel (aka: set for stupid)

The Brigantine. Oh she's fast. The cannon advantage will need a 3rd to your crew. Don't get me wrong a duo Brig is awesome and completely within a duo sloop crew's skill sets. Be ready to drop anchor or start to stop a lot sooner. That speed will put you into rocks 😅 They can be soloed. Would not recommend but it's a fun challenge. PvE would be at a "normal" difficulty. Sloop is easy, Galleon is hard. Skelly Galleons can spawn on you instead of Skelly Sloops. Even as solo.

Solo Galleon can be done. It's big. Turns like a hippo on dull ice skates tho. Needs a full 4 person crew to be effective tho. I have minimal experience.

Hello Sir , don't see or read this comment as an offence because i don't mean it in that way...You've been playing this game very recently , and so as your wife . So , i wouldn't change the Sloop at all because every well thinking Pirate knows that a Sloop is a real menace , it's hard to hit but the Sloop , manned by people that work like an oiled machine , is like a chainsaw on sails , i hacks and cuts Brigs and Gally's to splinters and demoralizes the big crews as some of those well oiled Sloop crews are very hard to catch...

If i were you , i would keep playing the game with your wife and see where you both in excell and what both your weak points are , then just set roles who will shoot the cannon , who will steer and handle the sails and who will repair ...Oh and always have a few blunderbombs in thy pockets and a blunderbuss at your side , it's the best gun againt boarders ...

Do NOT get discoureaged the first days , SOT may look like an arcady game , but it does has a lot of depth underneath it's hood...

So , keep playing and grow as a team and within a month or two ,every big ship will fear your Sloop... Happy sailing , Sir!

  • It doesn't matter what ship you sail. I solo galleon just fine.

The problem is how do you pvp? Game is like pvp magnet.

You can be on a sloop with 2 or galleon with 4 and hate life all the same if you can't shoot, can't keep distance, can't defend.

    Start there.

Blunderbombs and dual gunning are probably best for starting and ending defense.

Controlling top deck is essential. If you can control top deck you can solo.

I just solo'd a brig last night, 3v1 fight. I didn't get to sink them because Brigs are super tanks and I didn't want to effort. Just wanted some fun.

However, I got great cannon hits and saved my ship and got to sail away with a GG.

Why? Blunderbombs haha. Poor guy was right at my anchor too. Just blundered him off it until I could kill him.

Otherwise he didn't even get up the ladder.
