It's still terrible. Why am i only able to swing multiple times only if i hit something? Why isn't there a guard break? Why are ai hit boxes so big on melee attacks? Where's the parry? Why am i mini stunned on hits? I swear the only good thing about melee is the punishment for missing a charged attack and the little hops you can do when blocking.
Why hasn't melee combat been updated after all this time?

Because keybinds, probably.Doubt it. Double gunning is super stale. That's all I ever see. We have 3 different range options and melee only gets a sword. No axes, double swords, daggers, etc.
I'd be perfectly okay with the original minecraft left click spamming combat system we have here being touched up on, adding a parry system or more combos that you have to time your clicks on would be nice. Throwing daggers would be cool too giving you a short range melee option with the ability to throw the daggers at targets either slowing them or causing a bleed effect would be great.
I wonder if it would be a cool idea to add a parry on the cutlass that can block bullets. Use block in a tiny window after someone shoots at you, while looking at the shooter, and the bullet is blocked. This would encourage a lot more swordfighting, but then swordfighting would need to be fixed first and probably have some moves added.
@vincenttnecniv People keep proposing for new melee options (which I am not opposed to) but don't really elaborate on how they would work.
Double sword: What would this just be 2x M1 spamming with twice the stun lock? Like how would this work what is the idea here. If this just double stun locks you this would be extremely unfun to play against.
Axes: Not opposed to this a slow charge melee weapon that I saw people recommended could break ships from the inside slowly. Think this would be cool as a worst melee weapon but the added utility of damaging ships.
Daggers: I saw 2 options people recommend here. Option 1. A faster sword that cannot block. So either this has hit stun making it the most annoying weapon ever to fight against and just turning fights into get first hit to kill or has no hit stun where it just loses to regular sword who will stun it on every hit and loses to DG as it has no way to slow them. Option 2. A throwable melee weapon that acts as a worst sword but you can throw with ammo for damage... Yeah this would just be used in combo with the blunderbuss to give double gunners access to a melee weapon. Now as a DG myself I would be down for this but this would definitely not be a balanced weapon.
The issue people forget with weapon balancing often with this game is that players have 2 weapons available and so balancing always has to be done with this in mind. You should never be using just 1 weapon it's like choosing to play baseball without a mitt: put's you at a disadvantage and most probably painful.

Merrick's Cutlass kinda looks like an axe.. 🙄

Similar question; Why hasn't two guns been balanced or removed in favor of say, a dual flintlock option that is properly balanced and not cheesy and exploitable?
It just hasn't.
I'm pretty sure you use to have to carry a sword back in season 1 or maybe before that. You had to take a sword and a gun. This bunny hopping stupid combat we have now wasn't a thing.

They've never restricted players to a sword and gun.
I'd prefer to see more weapons or tools for combat than just more combat balancing. Combat is already somewhat balanced, sword is a really good weapon up close. Against enemies or other players, missing an attack means you get punished for not hitting the target, giving the opposition the chance to land a hit.
I do agree that the game's combat hasn't changed much. The one true addition were the blunder/ fire bombs and the cursed balls. At one point they made it so that players can't have a sword and 2 guns but that's a degradation of the combat system in exchange for combat balancing but not an actual addition.
One of the main things that I and other players have pushed for is for a hook shot hand held weapon or weapon tool that may be used to swing from ship masts, to board on close to mid proximities, and to climb on top of rock surfaces for an ambush or to make the eye of reach more viable.

You are misremembering.
During Beta we had access to all weapons.
They have, to date, never restricted players to a sword and gun only, though I wish they would.
