Does the Sovereign pay you?

gold bugs are pretty common

the results range from delayed to data loss

it's typically a hope for the best and prepare for the worst situation

occasionally they chuck some doubloons/gold at people if it's acknowledged publicly as data loss

you can keep an eye on sot_support on twitter for updates on things like this

It's just awful timing - the servers are currently having some issues and some people are not getting gold immediately, people are discussing it right now in Discord and a bunch of reports started coming in.

You'll get the gold, it just might take a bit for this server stuff to resolve, but it should update your gold retroactively when it's resolved. This is a Very recent issue, so just give it some time for them to sort it out.

Sorry you literally tried this out right as server issues started, that sucks. But to answer your question: Captains can turn in loot to either the Sovereigns (who deliver it to the respective factions) OR the respective factions manually, and you get paid the same either way. At least, you normally do, when weird server issues aren't a thing. Lol.

I think my issue might be related to this one, so I'll write my experience here: sometimes, when I turn in some treasures/skull, I don't get any experience from the faction I'm selling to.

(I am a noob, do not sail as captain, but as solo slooper and I use to make alliances, so maybe it is related to allies turning in stuff that gives no exp?)
