What Is The Point Of The Harpoon Secondary Function?

  • It 'Slowly retracts the winch' but everything I shoot either:

    1. Retracts instantly
      Or
    2. Can't retract at all.

I keep reflexively thinking I can winch myself towards a dock for better parking (I can't. Why can't we?)
So why does this function exist? Just for dingys to winch towards a ship?

I have. It does. It doable. Idk why you can’t. Maybe you need better practice or something.

  • You can apparently even winch yourself to the top of Galleon’s Grave, though I personally haven’t tried it. I have, however, winched my ship towards all manner of other, lower objects: docks, rocks, beaches, skelly ships, player ships, wrecked ships, sharks

    It does work.

Wait, so I CAN pull my entire ship closer to shores and docks? o.o

  • I use the harpoon reel in when I need to bring the ship closer to a docking point when the sails are up, I also use the locking part of the harpoon as an alternative to the anchor when I want to bring the ship to a stop, both are also used when I want to do a quick turn around a rock or island when not in open waters and I don't have the speed to do an anchor turn especially on my galleon.

Yes, though it can be a little janky sometimes. Make sure your anchor and sails are up and your wheel is centered.

  • There's also a lock function on the harpoon, forcing it to stop releasing line without reeling more in. Though it's entirely manual, so the instant you get off of the harpoon, it'll unlock and you'll start sliding away again.
But yes, precision docking is the second biggest use of the harpoon after collecting loot.
You can also use harpoons on rocks or in shallow water as you're sailing to turn more sharply without doing an anchor turn.

  • You can reel your self in towards a dock, you can use it to get your ship unstuck from a weird spot, or even use it to reverse slowly if you need to. The most common use for reeling though, is for fast harpoon turns while locking the harpoon grants wider harpoon turns.

  • If you're having a hard time reeling. Lock. X button on an Xbox controller. Mapping may vary lol. Hold it down too.

  • @eguzky There’s even a tertiary function- the lock. Hold ‘X’/‘R’ to prevent the rope from stretching without pulling. Good for pivoting and swinging around rocks, and good as the anchor at halting the ship if you and a crewmate lock the harpoons into the seabed at the same time.

I though R was the secondary function (IE: Reel)?

  • To add my voice to the chorus, you absolutely can use the harpoons to winch yourself around. If you arent forgetting to raise anchor first, you probably arent hitting the right button.

But yeah, you absolutely can do it!

  • @eguzky R is for locking. Secondary function is right click, which will reel it in.

    Ahh, ok. Thank you. :)

I tried this once with my friends and the harpoon instantly retracts if you get too far onto the shore.

You can and that's what it is for, one of my crewmates was notorious for running to and winching my ship at docks, whilst I was manoeuvring.

Your first issue is because there are some parts of the islands that you're not allowed to hook onto, so you have to adjust your aim to find a spot you can.

Can't retract at all sounds like what PithyRumble mentioned, you've locked the harpoon.

I've also got a few rowboats with winches into the taverns too, one of my earliest pictures was from 2019.

You can also load all your loot up on a harpoon rowboat and drag yourself to the vendor to sell, a bit silly now though with the sovereigns and all.

  • @danbeardluff Not pointless if you’re selling at Reapers….

Yeah, don't even need to use the harpoons at the soverign's, just the rower dock by their stairs into the tent.

  • @sn0kanon you can wrench a galleon to a rowboat. Those rowboats are black holes of mass
