Quest Board Question

  • Question: DO I have to be IN the game to get rewards for someone using a treasure map I posted?

I've tried posting 6 or 7 maps, but I either get sunk & lose them (Why? Why bury treasure if there's the same exact risk as carrying the treasure?)
Or I post the map, play for a few hours, then log out with no alerts that anyone used what I posted.

  • @eguzky Ahoy matey!

You do not :) You will get a prompt the next time you log into a session once your treasure has been found or the game gives you credit anyway once a server is no longer in use.

Thank you for the info. I guess that means I've never noticed the alerts, because it's been days since my last posting!
I'll have to keep a weather eye out next time.

  • @musicmee

Is it possible for it to get bugged though? I have only once, maybe twice ever gotten a notification about my maps being done. I've actually stopped doing them because I seem to never get credit for it!

For example, 2 days before this last season just ended, I buried about 1.5 to 2 hours worth of loot on Sunken Grove, and turned the maps into the quest board, and went to bed. Even a day or two later (and still), I received no notifications, and noticed that my leaderboard reputation for Order of Souls (it was mostly that kind of loot, with that emissary up, iirc) hadn't changed.

This has happened to me so many times, that I've gotten deflated and just stop posting quests, which sucks because I'd really like to! (Both for the leaderboard rep boost to make sure I get into the top ranks faster, and the joy of knowing someone will pick up the quest and get a huge hoard of treasure!)

  • I could be wrong, but I think maps only have a limited lifespan on the board. In other words, if nobody picks them up, they'll eventually disappear.

I'm not positive, but I thought I heard that somewhere.

  • @musicmee
really? i quit burying treasure because i have never got anything for it. It got to be a waste of time. Why burry it and get nothing when i can sell it and get something

  • @drwho1105 Yeah it seems like the prompt is missing... it WAS there!

  • @musicmee thanks! i never noticed any change on anything, so i assumed since there was no notification, i wasn't getting anything. I will give it a shot again and see

  • Aren't the milestones tracking posted maps and the value you hid now or did I actually have too much grog?

I still use it sometimes when I plan to come back for it later. Like a Chest of Sorrows/Rage when I am about to do some tricky content away from an outpost and can't be looking after them right now, or if I had to visit an island without my ship to proceed with a voyage (such as when it is surrounded by a ghost fleet I don't want to deal with) and found some good stuff there that I want to keep. I'll bury it on the island and come back when the fleet is gone. It's one of the few times I feel like a real pirate in this game. By which I mean, one of the few times I feel like a fictitious, pop-culture, piratey-type guy or something.

Hold on I didn't know this! o.o You climb the emissary ledger leaderboard if someone else turns in your buried loot??

  • @kozakdeit.

Seasonals and Level Rep. Not emissary.

  • @pithyrumble Oh right, nevermind then.

  • @pithyrumble @kozakderg

Is that 100% confirmed for sure? I thought it also gave you a bigger emissary ledger boost than turning it in yourself, and was a big part of the reward for it?

I thought that was part of the incentive - that especially for players who are already maxed in the trading companies, and done with the season, that that was the compensation for losing out on your gold (if you had turned it in yourself instead).

I also had assumed that's how people were getting absolutely insanely high emissary scores - hoarding tons of treasure and then burying it to give it away for extra emissary ledger rep. I could be wrong on all of that, but I'd like to be sure!

@ hombre (first part of your name prevents me from posting lol). I think it does disappear if that particular server closes, though I thought I read from a dev that in that case, you still get a rep etc boost more than if you turned it in, but not as much as if someone had taken and done your maps.

Also, does anyone know what happens if someone takes your map quest and then just reburies it to "steal" the rep etc boost for themselves? What about if they take it and then just log out before doing it? I've wondered if either of those are what's been happening to me, and why I almost never get anything for it it seems.

  • @eguzky you don't BUT, someone in the session you were in actually has to claim the map, dig up the treasure, and sell it. Happened a lot more at the start when it just went active, sadly doesn't really happen anymore.

  • @wile-e-coyoteee

I've been focusing on Emissary lately for rewards/achievements, and I've had recent pop-ups. No Emissary boost. It gives me seasonal rep. OoS, GH & Merch are all maxed and I haven't started burying Athena loot to test faction rep.

Insane Emissary scores come from Alliance Servers usually.

Generally speaking, unless you just like burying treasure (me) or want to be a nice pirate that no one believes, just skip burying after you clear the commendations.

I used to bury chests if I saw a ship on the horizon.
Then I learned buried chests are lost when you're sunk, which means you can either:

    1. Lose the chest when sunk.
      Or
    2. Lose the map to the chest when sunk.

So there's 0 incentive to bury chests. Not a bright mechanic on Rare's part.

  • @eguzky

The loot stays buried unless you leave the server. I buried one of the Reaper chests to get it off the map, chucked the stash map overboard.

Went back to it and found it.
I've also found loot from other player's maps that weren't posted 😳

Yeah but if you're sunk; you lose the maps & can't turn them in.
So either you risk losing the treasure, or you risk losing the maps...and thus, the treasure.

I hoped, at first, that burying the treasure would prevent me from 'losing' it, but also not allow me to dig it back up.
Basically; I thought I would give up the treasure to avoid losing it when sunk. This is not the case. I still think it's stupid I can lose the maps before I turn them in, when I can't USE THEM if I turn them in.

Unless it got ninja'd you can pick your maps up later if someone else doesn't first.

More importantly if you remember where you buried things, you can go back without your map and get your stuff even if someone had your map from the board/sinking or even of you red sea your map.

If hiding your loot to recover is your goal, you need to remember where you put it without a map.

You know there's a sound effect when you step on a player buried spot right?

The game says your maps are lost if you're sunk.
I assume the sinker can take them and use them?

I also did not know a sound effect played.

  • @eguzky

Yes. You lost your map. You can go back and get it too.

Yes, aggressive pirates can take and use your map. Nature of the beast, they likely won't use it. It involves playing lowly pvp 🤣 and most people are used to maps being trash ( foul bounty skulls and ammo crates )

Bury something. Walk back and forth across it. Learn that sound! You can occasionally find random buries like that. 👍
