How do I enjoy this game?

  • Me and my friends are all new players, and although we were very excited when we started playing about a week ago, we are quickly losing interest in this game. The amount of toxic players we run into is actually astounding. We can't set sail for more than 30 minutes without being boarded and double gunned constantly. How are we supposed to progress if we cant even finish a simple voyage or go to a world event without being hunted down by enemy ships for an hour? None of us are really sweaty players and we kind of just want to enjoy the game but the community is making this literally impossible. So my question is. How do I enjoy this game?

  • It depends.

If you're looking for profit, forget the world events. They're PvP magnets and if you don't want to/aren't good at engaging in it, then you'll only end up frustrated.

I'd aim for the Sea Forts and Treasuries. Decent loot in a fairly short time. Stick to the ones on the edges to reduce the chance of being interrupted.

It's not a guarantee, but I make a circuit of two Sea Forts (by Shark Tooth and Mermaid's) and two Treasuries (by Smuggler's and Old Faithful), and I can regularly get through them without incident.

Also, don't stack loot. Turn in early and often. With voyages, if an area is too hot, don't be afraid to cancel it and grab a new one elsewhere. There's no bonus for completing regular voyages, so don't feel you must see them through to the end.

Now if you're looking for a deeper level of enjoyment, you have two paths. If you're interested in PvP and want to get good at it, then immersion is your best bet. Throw up a Reaper's Mark and head for world events. But not for loot. Focus on the battles.

If you're not interested in PvP, then immersion is again your best bet. But immersion in death. Forget the loot, forget the progression, and make a game out of people attacking and killing you. Keep it up until death loses it's sting and is no more than a minor hiccup to you.

Ironically, loot in Sea of Thieves can be a major distraction. Players can get so fixated on it that it ruins the fun of the game itself. Treasure is plentiful and easily obtained. If you play semi-regularly you will get the gold you need.

I play a solo sloop three to four times a week for about an hour per session. I've never done a skeleton fort, Fort of Fortune, or any other world event. I've never done any legendary voyages or Athena stuff. And yet I'm a Pirate Legend, I've got a ton of cosmetics, and about 2 or 3 million in gold. (I can't remember off-hand.)

The secret to really enjoying Sea of Thieves is to enjoy Sea of Thieves, not the grind. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the grind, but in SoT that means you have to really enjoy the PvP as well. PvP will always be hovering nearby to disrupt the grind, so you either have to be able to enjoy engaging in it or you have to enjoy letting it wash over you like a warm, summer drizzle.

    See you pirate cowboy...

  • It's like chasing after the perfect goulash recipe, for yourself
    you can try the basics
    you can get experimental
    you try different things

some things you will not like
some things will not sit right with you
a lot of trial and error
you find what you do enjoy

you narrow it down to the things you like and stop messing with the things you don't

    patience, efficiency, strategy, preparation

    adapt

then the session is filling and enjoyable most of the time

You are playing with friends, your meal becomes more rewarding because of the togetherness, the environment less harsh because of the company.

  • @vac a-hombre this is quite possibly the best advice I’ve seen.

  • My favourite way is to do absolutely nothing specific.

    Do a shrine.
    Go island hopping.
    Get some screen shots.
Holy cow guys! Let's go sell this <insert item>
See if you can cannon yourself on top of that rock/fort/building

  • This week is different. Havnt really seen a single reaper hunting other players. :p

Too busy complaining about the update

  • @the-ghostly-hax yeaaaaa you’ll have some days like that all I can say is switch servers a few things to try to do that might help tho is keep a look out for other ships if your on a brig or galleon while sail keep to crews members on watch the ladders one on each side with blunderbusses everyone have blunder bombs to help repel boarders ….and some crews just hunt others for loot it’s what my crew did tonight

  • @burnbacon my crew went hunting had a blast

  • The only goal of Sea of Thieves is to have memorable adventures. Sometimes, losing is part of it.

That being said, if you don't want to fight other ships, alway have the spyglass ready. Check the horizon frequently, even if stopped at an island.
When you see someone moving in your general direction, just run. Trust no one. Sell early, and sell quick.

Being friendly is a sign of weakness, which will often be punished. If you want alliances, you have to earn it, blackmail, threaten, bribe... This is a pirate game after all. :yarr:

There are some NPC ship (Skeleton Ships) you can fight to practice. They can be recognised, by having ragged sails and more lights on board - all blue and green. Go fo the smaller ones first, then gradually work your way up to fighting full fleets.

This is not an easy game but not particularly difficult either once you get the hang of it.

Hey, can I play with you guys? That's WAY more action than I ever get.

Usually I spend like 2-3 hours trying to find somebody (ANYBODY) without seeing a damn soul and then log off.

How are you finding so many players so frequently?

I wish I had that much player interaction :(
