Can we get the megalodon spawns returned to normal? While I do encounter them, they seem increasingly more uncommon since the Shrouded Ghost event.
Megalodon Spawns?
Long before the ghost event
Imo a person should run into them about every hour of play consistently and currently it's multiple hours if it all.
Poor meg spawns makes sailing less active
it's absolutely destructive to shrouded ghost hunting, it puts people in a much more difficult position than in the past with less spawns.Megs should be common, their loot rng suggests common is appropriate.
It's necessary for shrouded ghost to be realistic
It adds loot/flag bumps for in between sailing
Imo it's disheartening that this has gone on a long time with no real acknowledgment of it so people have just spent months with terrible spawn rates which seriously effects a pirate's ghost hunt and other commendations related to megs
Pure conjecture but Megs seem to infest certain squares, and I run into them a lot when I am on the edges of the map. I think part of the problem is that megs should be more common in the more travelled squares, or maybe have some random chance when you enter any square for them to show up.
I have had decent luck getting jumped by them on southern edge of the Shroud/ right above Devil's roar. I almost always get a meg attack when I return from the Shores of Gold.

I've done a significant amount of meg hunting and trial and error and I've yet to seen it be much more than just an rng timer
one that currently could get people up to 3 hours+ of sailing and entirely possible to not spawn at all that day.
Even spending some time on land doesn't appear to help much at all like it used to about a year+ ago
It's just rng hell right now, timer hell
A crew mate and I did 2 veils in the Shores of Plenty, sank a reaper brig coming from a fort, and cashed out before doing a "Meg Run".
We sailed from reapers to the West side Plunder Valley. Headed South and hooked East of Sharkbait. We sailed on the South side of the Ancient Isles and then hit the edge of Roar before heading South to the Red Sea. At the Red Sea we banked Northwest toward Mutineers Rock. We encountered the Meg at Q 23.
Thankfully it was a Shadow maw and friend still needs a few of those. I am after my final Ancient Terror and that one that doesn't exist.
We were "done" with our session and spent 40 min sailing through exclusively deep water to finally get a Meg. It used to interrupt adventures and now it barely present.

Out of my last few hundred megs I can only think of maybe 2 that spawned early on in a session, the kraken can spawn right off the dock of a new session and skelly ships can as well.
What this means is that pretty much only long session players will see them much at all and if something leads a person to needing a new server that long timer starts all over again.
A newer player that doesn't have 3 hours of time per session could literally take years to knock off the meg commendations that weren't really a struggle back when I did them.
It's such a mess I think it makes more sense just to embrace the spawning method from the shrouded deep. I much prefer random organic spawns but that hasn't been working out for over a year now and in my view it's just not healthy hunting for newer players and long term ghost hunters.
Agree with what people are saying here. The meg spawns have been extremely reduced either intentionally or not. A few patches ago, the skelly ships had suffered the same fate but now seem to be back to a more sensible level. With the added tools (trident) and increased means of supplying yourself, more megs shouldn't be a problem even for newer players.
I actually really like how they spawn now. They seem to have a slightly higher chance when there are more ships nearby but otherwise are fairly rare. Sometimes decreasing supply increases demand, especially when it comes to meg meat.
It would be really cool if, in time, Athena's Fortune Emissaries can get quests that upon completion, spawn one of these.

It could be a hunter's call quest that is similar to a shipwreck voyage quest. Follow clues to the location of a meg. Plenty of open water along the sides of the map now that would work.
As long as the voyage takes long enough travel time and has enough rng, meg encounters can be spaced out enough to not be cheesed.
Alliance servers already all sail together to feed off each other's spawns during meg hunts so this wouldn't amplify that as they would have to separate to do it.
@captain-coel
Just a theory, I think the timer that makes a meg spawn has stopped counting when stopped at an island, or even resets it.
I’ve noticed if you’re in open water for around an hour, a meg will spawn like normal, however, just normally playing the game and visiting island, they won’t spawn for a very long while.
In fact testing from before and after the adventure showed just a minute difference in meg spawns when staying stationary in water for a while.@aribalam said in Megalodon Spawns?:

In fact testing from before and after the adventure showed just a minute difference in meg spawns when staying stationary in water for a while. This hasn't been my experience. My time on open sea has increased while the meg consistency has decreased. Fleets are my main events which is consistently on open water.
It could be that nerfing pve just lead to less and less spawns. Megs used to spawn during fleets a lot, spawned with skelly ships and krakens, that all got nerf'd which could have done a lot of damage to a meg spawn odds depending on what the algorithm is.
Since megs very very rarely spawn early on in a session it's likely to be tied to an individual in some way with the timer, if it was pure rng on the server then people would see them right off the dock sometimes which almost never happens with megs in my experience.
Imo the nerfing of pve took a lot of interesting scenarios with multiple pve spawns colliding with pvp and whittled it down to uninteresting scenarios where pve is not only rare but lacks the power to consistently interfere with outcome. The new ferry timer only makes pve less dangerous.
Imo bring it all back so it feels like dangerous adventure again and not just themed ride where it's an appearance of danger with pop out scares but not real danger.

Its great
i have killed 4 shrouded
Need 1 for the lhotsg
Then im probably a godhow many meg encounters do you have?
I've only found meg in certain specific areas... I have the feeling that before they spawn even if we were close to islands but now only in spaces really open and after some time of play.
I was playing with my friend hunting meg meat in shipwrecks, i remembered that east of galleons grave there is almost always a megalodon coming back from shores of gold, I went there and he showed up.
this was just one of several times I had to go to specific spaces to find it, before it seemed more random.

coming back from shores of gold can be an indicator of time not location
they really can spawn pretty much anywhere that's a bit off land. I've seen megs and krakens spawn close to everything, skelly ships wait for people to get to more open water but the sound can spawn even a tiny bit off the land
they spawn right on the edge of the red sea, I've had them there
and they also spawn in the special stormy water by the coral fortress at the top
The problem is you are playing in adventure mode instead of single player sea of thieves. In single player EVERYTHING happens to you since there are no other ships for stuff to spawn on. And usually that means 2 things will spawn on you at a time. Its almost too much at times distracting you from actually trying to quest. But they keep modifying how server merging works making it harder and harder to get single player SoT

Then im probably a godknowing Rare the next update after you or anyone else finally gets 5 they will add something like "kill 5 shrouded ghost on a captained ship" so you will have to start over from 0 as they have done many times when they add new content. Like oh youre athena 10? well heres a bunch of achievements now to go re-grind the content you vowed to never do again to unlock the new cosmetics that it took us WAY too long to add to the game. Because we cant just give them to you, you have to earn them by doing a grind you already finished.
@wolfmanbush If it was just time I wouldn't have to (purposely) head to these places for him to show up.
Today i after an adventure, head east of galleons grave to summon one more, and he came.
Trust me, it's incredibly accurate how they actually appear in these areas.
they are all open areas in the middle of the map, on the edges I think it will appear anywhere.

The bold is likely why. You had a session, time passed, and at the end you sailed for a meg and found one. Location would likely be a coincidence.
@wolfmanbush Then I can pass the locations for you to test, after a long session without finding go through them.
Of the last 10 megalodons I found, only 2 were unexpected, all the others I went to the place to summon them.
Time is something necessary, but I think that after the adventure, the spawn locations for meg need to be more open(I'm not sure)
S19 - T7 - J4 - i13 - K12(I haven't tested much here) - Between Sanctuary and Keel Haul Fort
The time factor is also important, but in these locations is where I'm able to find them, in them or on the edges.

nah you keep those spots, they are you special hunting locations
It would take me about a month or 2 of testing and trial and error to see what was likely happening and that would take the fun out for me. If I'm gonna find a secret spot it'll have to be through my own searching.
You get those megs, tell them I said Hi

Q23 is a spot to add to that. it is way out of the way but I've seen 2 there.
@magus104
They would never do that
If they did no one would play the game
Its like losing your progress without a glitch
@WolfManbush
360@timedsatyr79799 Well when the game first came out there were no commendations for pirate legends at all. During curse sails I was pirate legend the whole time. Sunk at least 150 skeleton ships. If I recall the athena commendations werent added until shrouded spoils? And despite having been athena 10 for the longest time nothing I had done as pirate legend counted to progress these insert south park "we're sorry" GIF. "Since the commendations weren't in the game we didn't have a way of tracking progress so you have to start from 0 like a newbie"
In the very least if they dont add a 5 shrouded ghost achievement to captains knowing how Rare likes to troll us IE showing a shrouded ghost in every trailer. I bet we would need to kill at least 1 as a pirate captain. Gotta keep the hunt for MobyD alive
I'm hunting mega every day for commendation, today I killed 4, I will write here what I learned.
The time I'm getting a meg spawn is one hour and ten minutes, after that just head to the edge of the map or to specific places inside and it will appear.
The locations: S19 - T7 - J4 - i13 - K12 - between sanctuary and Keel haul fort - south of mermaid hideaway - 15R
or on the edges-If there is a server change, the time is reset and you will have to wait another hour and ten minutes.
-If a skeleton ship appears, the mega will not come.
I didn't do a proper time test, but i'm getting it with the time i said.
Rare should decrease the time to forty minutes, but I still prefer it not to be a random time as I'm enjoying being able to hunt instead of just being hunted.

The location thing isn't necessarily harmful to spread around but it's going to be a coincidence without significant data to suggest a bug causing spawns in specific areas.
An example would be that I have spawned hundreds of megs between the sea dog tavern and fotd, the reason for that is because after I solo a fleet and sell at reapers that is where I head to try to get a meg. It's not because of location that I found them there it's because of timing and my choosing of that area on a regular basis.
and I hope you keep detailed track of your meg hunts, it would be interesting to look at the data over time.
