The Sea of Theives Community (honest opinion)

  • a few notes before the post:
1- This is not a hate post, im only making observations that are based on facts
2- You have a right to disagree
3- This post is not to the community itself but to the people that work on improving the community (rare devs etc...)
4- My only goal is to improve the game itself and in part the community
5- How you play this game is up to you. But have the skill to protect your way of playing the game
6- Sorry for the grammar mistakes (you will survive)

The SOT community can be devided in many groups:

    • New player: Its just a new player and he doesnt know what´s going on
    • Causal player: this group of players play the not because of the gameplay or to progress on the game, but to just enjoy any new content and leave the game intel the next content comes out
    • Average player: This are people that play the game as there main game, however they only enjoy the PVE and tall tale expirience and they just wanna have a good time
    • Veteran player: Somebody that play this game everyday enjoys both PVP and PVE and enjoys every aspect of the game, they have done most of the stuff that the game has to offer.
    • Top tier player: Its like the veteran player, but he is just very very good at the game and he very skilled on PVP, mostly only plays for the PVP but also enjoys the chill PVE

All of these players have to play with and against eatch other everyday, causing many interactions some of them passive, chill and funny others more agressive (pvp fights) both of this interactions are fine and they are alowed by RARE, how you wanna approach the situation is up to you, wanna talk to them? ok do it, wanna sink them? ok do it, you can do whatever you want as long as you dont break TOS (go read it before you say something).

These interactions causes different types of play styles to interact and that causes problems...

    • " I want PVE only servers because i dont want to PVP"
    • " double gun exploit needs to be removed"
    • " Server hopping is bad"
    • " alliance servers are bad for the game, remove it from the game"
    • " give PVP only servers so the sweats leaves us alone"
      etc...

we all have seen these threads on reddit, twitter and forums, these opinions cause debates, some of them go right others not so well. Most of those debates are between PVP players and PVE playes, however this debate is not healthy. There is more PVE players in SOT than PVP players so there presence and opinions (right or wrong opinions) are felt more in the community, and the PVP players bully people for being PVE players, and laugh at the fact that they might not be as skilled as them. this is not healthy, every party envolved is toxic and nodoby wants to listen to anyone.

Because of this pointless debate the community is devided and nobody agrees with anything, and nodody thinks what is good for the game and for everyone, and they only think what they want for themselves, PVP players, want easy ways to find fights ( but if they find someone better than them they run away ) and PVE players want easy PVE and easy rewards for doing 30 mins worth of content.

just so you guys understand how lacking this game is, here is a small list of things this game could add if the community really wanted progress in this game:

1- New maiden voyage that actually teachs people how to play ( how the weapons work, how the boat works, how to get your setting how you want)
2- New progression system for veteran players that doesnt evolve commendations (they can go to warframe and take some ideas they have go stuff)
3- Fix the server´s stability and fix hit reg, fixing these issues will bring alot of new players in
4- Heath bar for bosses, the new players dont know how bosses work
5- New bosses with new mechanics ( go look at MMOs and RPGs and take ideas)
6- Lack of connection between Twitch/Twitter and the main game (on the menu of LOL and CSGO you have lievstreams of competions going on and other stuff why not make that in SOT to)
    and so much more

The community needs to come together and say what would make this game better for everyone not just me and the othe 300 people that agree with me.
saying : "Oh this game is not meant for you" or "sea of theives is not like the other games" is wrong, the game is special but its still a video game, and gameplay matters.

PVE and PVP is apart of the game and they both are a big part of the game, one is not important than the other one. and just because there is more people on one side that doesnt give you the right to be 100% all of the time and that Rare needs to listen to only your side, and just because you are better at the video game doesnt give you the right to be important than anyone else.

    Happy sailing

  • It's just people talking.

these forums aren't toxic, they are moderated with quality imo, doesn't much matter if people agree or not it's just conversation and within that there is always some value in a fairly peaceful place like this because at times it leads to some form of connection and connection is a beautifully positive thing.

People disagree with me all the time but in general my experiences here have been mostly pleasant even within disagreement.

People bicker, it happens. I see the opportunity for contribution as positive even if not every post is positive. People can have their opinions and their views, it's the beauty of a free environment.

Maybe it doesn't lead to much but it always leads to something and that something is better than nothing imo.

  • @wolfmanbush "something" sometimes is worst than nothing, community needs to think on the progression of the game itself not just on what they want as individual players, that´s is my point. the game is lacking on alot of things, so we dont just need to get "somewhere" we need the step in the direction that will open the door to more and better content for every side of the community.

  • @mintharp184509
7- i would like that, but that will devide the community even more (in game) and servers will get more empty
8- yeah why not, as long as they dont make it an aim bot like in Apex or Halo or COD
9- nope, just make people be able to spawn with their weapons out and make more spawns
    10- yeah why not, guess
11- i feel you on that mate but i think they shouldnt change that, its annoying but you can learn how to deal with that
    12- YES PLEASE
13- dont touch the weapons please
14- dont touch the weapons please
15- dont touch the weapons please

I have a very large picture approach to how I view things. I put a lot of thought into things and effort into my approach but that is my choice for me

people should say what they feel is true not what aligns with what I feel or say.

If my points are strong I will be able to articulate them in a way that might become a resource for others but nobody else is required or obligated to approach anything like I do.

Bring the thoughts, bring the views, bring the opinions, we can work it out in a thread. Other people get to start out how they want to, how they think is right, and we can go from there.

Bubbles are formed by pushing out people and ideas that don't align with the hive. I think people should be themselves with their thoughts and if we clash on ideas and views lets go for it. People can disagree with politeness and consideration. It happens here every day

People are more open to changing their minds on issues and their views towards an environment when they can say what they wanna say first rather than be told what to do.

If it gets overly hostile and insulting the thread can get shut down and everyone can move on to the next conversation.

There is consistency but in conversation about the environment of a game there isn't much that is truly right and wrong it's just direction and which a person prefers.

There are things in the game that are contradictions to the foundation of the game, that sends a mixed message and not everyone is going to see things the same based on some things not being consistent with others. It's understandable that some will lean one way or another when the environment itself leans different ways with some features/content.

  • "1- New maiden voyage that actually teaches people how to play ( how the weapons work, how the boat works, how to get your setting how you want)"
The Maiden Voyage does a fine job of teaching players the basics. The thing about Sea of Thieves is that it is supposed to be a social game, and they really promote Find a Crew and Open Crew, so the idea is that you learn a lot from more experienced players, or by playing the game. There are a lot of tool tips and YouTube videos. I don't think they need a 2-hour intro to show off every single thing about the game.

"2- New progression system for veteran players that doesn't evolve commendations (they can go to Warframe and take some ideas they have go stuff)"
Great "idea". "Look at other games for ideas." Fantastic. I think the fact that so very few players had reached Pirate Legend Level 20 by the time they increased the cap to 30 suggests that this is not really needed.

"3- Fix the server´s stability and fix hit reg, fixing these issues will bring alot of new players in"
Brilliant. Wish the dev team had thought of this. /s

"4- Heath bar for bosses, the new players don't know how bosses work"
Yeah, and then we can add floating numbers for when someone hits so they know how much damage they did, and also floating text that says "BONUS, COMBO, CRITICAL HIT!" No. Unnecessary. New players will learn quickly that you hit things until they die. They do a fine job of showing when something is damaged, like the lack of knockback and the "whoosh" sound on shadow skeletons at night without the lantern, etc.

"5- New bosses with new mechanics ( go look at MMOs and RPGs and take ideas)"
    Brilliant. Good feedback. /s

"6- Lack of connection between Twitch/Twitter and the main game (on the menu of LOL and CSGO you have livestreams of competitions going on and other stuff why not make that in SOT too)"
But why? What does that add? For the most part there are not "competitions". The SoT Partners do somethings, but why muddy the homepage, especially on console, with stuff like that? You want that stuff you know where to go: the website or Twitch. This seems unnecessary.

"7-Give solo sloopers a matchmaking preference to prefer solo sloop servers only or mixed ship servers with full crews."
Nope. Why? Some solo-sloopers are gods amongst mortals and will destroy any ship they see, regardless of brig or sloop or gally. Everyone else, this just gives no incentive to advance in the game and if they do decide to go into the "all ships" servers then they'll be totally bulldozed. Solo sloop is a choice. Live with it.

"8-Add a subtle aim assist for controller users or if there’s an outcry just add it for everyone with the option to be toggled on and off."
I have no comment about this suggestion.

"9-Improve the spawn system to stop pirates from dying the moment after they spawn"
Agreed more spawn points and and a tweak to the spawn system could help, if it tried to spawn you away from an non-crew pirate as much as it could. Include the crow's nest and maybe other spots. Although in practice this probably 9/10 times only delays the inevitable. But I do think it could use some work.

"10-Modify the functionality of the trident of dark tides to prevent players from holding a tier 3 charge for an unlimited amount of time."
I'm not sure on this. Doesn't holding the charge not allow you to interact with other objects and use other weapons, as well as slow movement? If I'm wrong on this, then sure, make it discharge after 10 or 15 seconds.

"11-Prevent stacking loot on top of the capstan"
Why? Because it makes it harder to drop the anchor? There's other ways to slow/stop a ship (Anchor Ball, Chainshot, etc), so I see this as a valid use of the games assets.

"12-Increase the sloop’s mast durability by one plank"
Sure? I dunno if it changes all that much. If that makes it require two chainshots to take down, maybe. Might make it unbalanced, but I'd be ok with them trying something like this for a while.

"13-Decrease direct hit damage from a blunderbomb from 50 to 25 when thrown."
I think if you can direct hit someone with a blunderbomb they deserve that damage. It's less than a sniper shot.

    "14-Decrease sword swipe range slightly"
This is probably more of a hitreg issue than anything.

"15-Increase the flintlock ammo capacity by 1"
Realistically what will this do? Will this actually make a huge difference in the game? Why not 2, or 3? I think it's fine the way it is, and increasing it by one I don't think will actually alter the game significantly.

1- New maiden voyage that actually teachs people how to play ( how the weapons work, how the boat works, how to get your setting how you want)

I'd agree to an extent it could be modified slightly, however, I feel like people can learn by playing, I mean, that's how we all managed right?

3- Fix the server´s stability and fix hit reg, fixing these issues will bring alot of new players in

Would be great if they do manage to resolve the server issues for sure.

6- Lack of connection between Twitch/Twitter and the main game (on the menu of LOL and CSGO you have lievstreams of competions going on and other stuff why not make that in SOT to)

100%, there needs to be better communication of giveaways/drops/activities etc across ALL social media AND in the game. It should be equal across the board to give as many people as possible the information they require.

And then for @mintharp184509 said in The Sea of Theives Community (honest opinion):

7-Give solo sloopers a matchmaking preference to prefer solo sloop servers only or mixed ship servers with full crews.

This wouldn't solve anything in terms of PvP balance, as top tier players (to use OP's terminolgy) would still be fighting against new players.

8-Add a subtle aim assist for controller users or if there’s an outcry just add it for everyone with the option to be toggled on and off

The only reason aim-assist would be needed, is to make controller vs m/k fairer.
So they could do a more logical thing and make Controller preffered servers, instead of Xbox preferred. This way, all controllers players, irrespective of platform, have a fairer PvP experience. Aim assist wouldn't even be required then.

  • @maximusarael020
1- no it doesnt, new players that come out of the Maiden V dont even know how all the guns work...
2- athena is not veteran progression there is more thing they could had to the game like... alot of thing
4-heath bars are necessary for eveyone that way they can approach in different ways depending how low heath he is.
6- how are you "muddying the page" with that, also there is competion in SOT and the fact that you dont know that, just proves my point plus you dont have to showcase only competion you could show SOT partners as well

  • @lt-l00t
They don't know how the guns work?? There are three guns, and they are pretty self-explanatory to anyone who has existed in a world where they are able to play video games. Shotgun, pistol, sniper. Short range, medium range, long range. I think it even says something on the descriptions. It's ok to not spoon-feed everyone aspects of the game. You don't have to teach pirates that when they stay underwater too long they drown. The figure that out. It's ok to not have everything spelled out. You learn as you go.

I'm glad they could add a lot more to the game, like "a lot of things," but my point stands, why do they need more progression if there is still progression left to be had that people are not completing?

Health bars are unnecessary because what different way are you going to approach things? Also, with most of the Skeleton Lord fights, there are different cycles and they do different things based on how much damage they have taken, so you kind of know already.

You're either putting more stuff on the login screen that doesn't need to be there, or creating unnecessary tabs that .05% of the community will look through. They have all that available on their website, why make you look through it in the game? If people want to watch that, they will seek it out. And yes, there is "competition" however it's just not that important for those playing the game. It's not really a competitive PvP game, so why add that to a page where most people won't care about it? Leave it on the website where stuff like that belongs.

  • @maximusarael020

Thank you for your feedback sir have a nice day on your sea of theives exeperience

  • @lt-l00t
    Anytime.

  • @lt-l00t
    1 - Sure
    2 - Hunter's Call? (Just kidding)
3 - Easier said than done
4 - No, and it's pretty straight forward- shoot it until it stops shooting back.
5 - New bosses are always good (Less tanky ones please)
6 - Not everyone watches twitch (And we have Umbra's Installations)
    @mintharp184509
7 - Nah, solo is a risk one opts to take
8 - Why does everyone think controllers are worse? I play on PC and use a controller and have no problems contending with other peoples
9 - As soon as they can move, they should be vulnerable. They shouldn't take damage during the loading screen, though.
    10 - Not a bad idea
    11 - No
    12 - What?
13 - If they get a direct hit, they deserve the 50 damage (Compare to flintlock hit, which expends an easily replenishable resource and takes less time and accuracy, only good thing about the blunderbomb comparatively is the knockback and unreliable AoE)
14 - I can't be 100% certain, but the sword range does indeed seem a bit long
15 - Haven't heard that one before, not a bad idea but with ammo pouches it wouldn't make a massive difference

  • @lt-l00t you gotta remember that those of us who started back in the day didn’t have the maiden voyage, we didn’t have the pirate academy or anything else to aid us. We learned from those around us, those we met on the open seas and those on the forum.
The game is an open world sand box, where fortunately you can dip in and out as and when you please, with or without anyone and you may or may not meet anyone while playing the game. If you don’t play for days, weeks, months or years it doesn’t matter as you can still pick up where you left off.
Maiden voyage does a great job with the basic rudiments of the game but pirates only learn everything else by trying.
To me it’s somewhere I can play pirate without taking things too seriously, and it’s perfect.

  • I would just like a boss health bar
