Commending other pirates

  • Ahoy!

    I have a game suggestion.

I have been doing a lot of PVP lately on the seas and experienced a lot of toxicity and aggressive behaviour in the community. I understand, that getting sunk is not enjoyable and I understand that in the heat of the battle emotions can get out of hand.

But there is an occasion in the game where getting sunk is actually better than winning the fight and selling the loot. It is when the oponent communicates with you and just says/writes “gg” or “good fight see ya next time” and NOT spams you with “Rolls on Deck Laughing”.

And on this occasion I would like to give the opponent some kind of tribute, some kind of respect you see. Something that says “This pirate is a good sportsman”. Something like a commendation.

I have the feeling we can only report people but we cannot commend those who have honour and show respect, even to people below their skill level.

I don’t want the sea of thieves to become a place where it is only about making friends, I want my fights and I want that people to attack my ship and crew out of the blue. Don’t get me wrong here.

It’s just a little detail that is missing in this game in my opinion. And it could have a big impact.

    Regards

  • @cptn-dacruz the gentleman sailor title eh? I like this. I do use "Rolls on deck laughing." But I'm not toxic...

From gentleman sailor to legendary gentleman captain ... you get the idea :) It could be also some kind of safety belt for reports/bans but I am struggeling with this additional thought.

The real reason people get super toxic over losing loot in Sea of Thieves has always been about the time disparity between completing a voyage or world event let’s say, versus how long it takes for a skilled crew to sink an average crew.

Sea of Thieves would not be so exciting if there was no danger and loot would have no value if there was no thievery. And like chess and any other game/skill ... there are people who spent thousands of hours of dedication to reach this skill level. Think about it.

Being mad and toxic is easy... being honourable and admiting that you made a mistake and lost because of that takes real mental power. But realizing this is part of the journey in Sea of Thieves. :)

Rodl even if spammed incessantly is far more tolerable to me than saying hurtful things.

True. We need to sail in a different direction here, instead of focusing on negative and toxic behaviour we could encourage people to do the opposite. That's why we need a commendation system in my opinion.

  • @cptn-dacruz Being a good sport creates good gaming vibes.

I remember during the second month of SOT (when you had to wait for hours until a normal fort was active and everyone will race towards it) an encounter with a great crew. They seemed more versatile in pvp yet my crew was aces in naval fight. After a few clashes, that frankly could have gone either way, they decided to break the engagement and while leaving some of them said "Cheers to the crew". In that moment we all felt elated for we had won our rivals' respect. It didn't matter if we finished the fort at that point yet we answered with "Well played" as both ships left in different directions.

I think those moments make this game more interesting and respecting your opponents should be encouraged.

    Just a few thoughts:
This could in theory be cheesed by alliance servers. This doesn't really matter all that much, but it means that the alliance may not actually be being a good sport. A way to get around this is to allow limited commendations a day or a limit to how many times you can commentate the same pirate.
Also, commendations should be received when loading into a game (like renown & reputation from treasure maps) and not when they are actually earned, so pressuring or threatening people into giving commendations is less effective.
Lastly, it's possible commendations would become a bribe or a system of "give me a commendation and I'll give you a commendation". Neither of these are a major problem nor easily fixed, though- just something I thought I would bring up.

I like the idea, though. Very good.

  • @Cptn-DACRUZ The ability to give positive feedback can be abused by friends giving it to friends who don't deserve it. At least with reports, it's confirmed 1st.

I'm not against having new titles like Gentleman Pirate (A bit sexist though), but I think it should be achieved in some other manner.

@MintHarp184509 As far as spam protection, it would need some leeway - at least 3x allowed, and only for the same quick chat. The reason for this is simple - if you cap it at 2, and not just for the same quick chat, the moment a pirate says "Aye!" "Aye!" they would lose the ability to completely quick chat for 30 whole seconds. A lot can happen in those 30 seconds! You'd effectively punish a pirate for being a pirate... I also use it to tell my crew to "Push!" "Push!" "Push!" on the capstan. 😅

  • would like to give the opponent some kind of tribute,

Just knowing is enough. No title, no reward.

  • I don't like social status things personally and I don't put a lot of weight on the opinions of one about another.

The past is irrelevant to me during a random interaction with a random player and I'm unlikely to see them more than 2 or 3 times ever again. I'm not vetting someone for something I just randomly crossed paths. All that matters is that interaction at that moment imo. If we are cool during our interaction then we are cool, what others like or don't like shouldn't influence that imo.

If people have an issue they have report and if they wanna become friendly they have in game options and private messaging options. Imo there isn't any reason to make it a thing that involves anyone else.

It would only prevent the same phrase after it’s been used 2x within 30 seconds not all phrases.

Still won't be able to tell my crew to push that capstan...

Still too limiting, IMO. We shouldn't be limiting communication to that extent, especially when it's so important for the social aspects of our adventures. Besides, we already have tools to prevent chat spam - if it gets bad enough, you can always choose to mute other crews or everyone.

  • I read what you Pirates wrote and came to the conclusion that my first idea to implement something in the game is very likely the wrong direction. I have to agree with BurnBacon, even though I wish that the "Legend of the Sea of thieves" title was something like that. (And not just sinking 500 Skelli Ships). But implementing a knew mechanic in the game is really the wrong way. No. There would be too much abuse and it is probably not what we want.

I must admit it has to be something else ... something deeper. Something subtile...
