I was wondering what the end of life plans is for this game. I know that this is not relevant any time soon but wanted to know if the sea of thieves servers will still run once rare stops developing the game. I know that because of how the servers operate specifically in this game, there is a chance sot wont be playable once the 10 year plan of the game is over. I hope this is not the case but was just wondering if there will be dedicated servers after rare moves on from this game.

They'll likely keep them up for a time after they actively stop developing for it and then shut them down. There is no chance, it is 100% that SOT will not be playable once that happens.
@d3adst1ck when all support has gone this game should be made a single player offline experience. At least that way our achievements are not lost forever.

They'd either have to release the server build to everyone, which probably isn't possible due to licensing, or they'd have to re-engineer the game to work as a standalone experience which if they'd already cut active development of it is also not going to happen.
The only recourse would be someone developing an open source server by themselves, but since the game now has Disney content good luck with not getting shut down.
@d3adst1ck I know it's a dream. But Modders on PC would make this work. That's the problem with online games. Server shuts down and the game is dead. That's why I spend little to no real money in online games. No legacy

I agree.
This really wouldn't be that difficult.
They literally just ship the map and everything with the game itself and make it an update. The game will be like 100gb but at least it's still playable

That makes zero sense. You can't just "ship the map".

What do you mean?
There is a map somewhere.
Just put it in a file or something
Or just make a copy of it and send that
Literally every other open world game on the planet can do that just fine
It's simple , we are Pirates , right ? Well then , this is what we will do ... If Rare stops developing this game and good old Mr Spencer would pull the plug then we, the Pirates , invade Richmond, take over all servers , including for other games , and ransom them , with that money we will keep the SOT servers running and we will pay the employees with the ransom money , we will give them food and shelter , and a chain with a ball around their ankles...
Or if our Pirates have programming skills then we hijack the server place and run SOT ourselves ... Damn, my plan is so good that even the Pirate Lord himself has taken his hat off for me ;)
It's not about how large the file becomes, but rather about the back bone work that is done on the servers (such as simulating waves, keeping track of location of loot, ships, and players, which is done server side), which would now have to be done on main machine, such as PC.
Considering how badly the current servers can put up with multiple ships and player in one area, I would be surprised if anyone's PC would be able to do the work servers do while running the game +60fps, let alone xbox'es, not even the Series X.
All our machines do is send data to the main server telling what we do, and rendering the textures/models, which are in fact already in the game files.

I'm sure after the games support modders in the remaining community will probably figure it out. Tons of games whoms servers have been cut remain able to be played online thanks to some smart fellows in their communities
LOL, and for every one that has there are HUNDREDS that have not or could not - either being not possible technically or not allowed legally.
Armchair programmers are the worst.
@dlchief58 ??? I didn't say it was totally possible just that they might be able to figure it out. Don't try and pretend like you know if it's possible or not either my guy. That's not really being an armchair programmer lol. Work on not being so randomly hostile, it'll help you in life

Excuse me but WHO is being hostile here?
I pointed out the reality of the situation that a lot of you like to ignore with your "pie in the sky" ideas. You have no idea about what my education level is nor what my background is, but I assure you I am more qualified to comment on this than you. Work on not taking everything so personal and playing the victim when someone points out the error in your ideas - it'll help you in life.
@dlchief58 armchair programmers are the worst? Let's look at what the Modding community did for GTA compared to what Rockstar did. Let's look at what modders did for Cyberpunk 2077 compared to CD Project Red. He'll CD Project Red employed modders

By "Armchair programmers" I was referring to those who come here and say everything would be easy to do with no actual knowledge in the field (as a few have already done here - the equivalent to an "armchair quarterback" was what I was going for), not actual programmers or modders.
@dlchief58 Again if you with your wonderfully brilliant education would like to read and tell me where exactly did I say it was possible? I merely stated that maybe they could figure it out, you never know that was all.
Instead however you decided to refer to me as an armchair programmer and continue to say that they are the worst, implying me using context clues because that is indeed how the english language works (which I do agree with btw they are indeed the worst). So yes it was hostile lol but I don't really care just thought it was odd.
But yeah you have fun going around and telling people about your higher education. Which by the way you also randomly assumed my own level of education, you again also have no idea how educated I could be myself. Not that I am though which is exactly why I didn't say that it WAS possible.

I mean you're completely wrong about how any of that works.

When you start off with ignorant statements, no assumption regarding your knowledge on this is required since you already made it clear.
And since you edited your original comment so as to not look as bad, let me show you again what you actually said:

I merely pointed out that for every one game that has remained online through fan support, 100s have not which is true - both for technical and legal reasons. You took offense and then come back with things I never said - not once did I comment saying whether it was possible or not, just presented the reality of the landscape which you seem to have an issue with.
I will tell you this - no Xbox Live game has remained online after server closure and end of support. Since this game doesn't use LAN/System Link option for multiplayer, there isn't an IP tunneling workaround like was used when Live was shut down for the original Xbox. So chances are slim to none of outside parties making this game work... and slim just left.
@dlchief58 I know exactly what I said, the edit was just a dumb petty joke but alright. Was not to not look as bad considering the original was quite literally still there in your quote and because I even said it was edited but ok.
If you can't see how I was just stating that it MIGHT be possible when I said that they 'will probably figure it out' then I don't know what to say and am done here

Yeah, I see that now - no problem there.
And I'm saying the odds of it happening are slim to none for a variety of reasons - the biggest one likely being the reluctance of Rare/Microsoft releasing the source code for the server side software (I know I wouldn't want that propriety software being out there for free if I made it). Merely trying to temper your expectations as a lot of you fail to grasp the difficulty of what you are requesting or think can be done easily (shown by your continued insistence that it "probably" can be done by someone without access to the server side software). I'm not here to argue but to offer you some knowledge and perspective.
Being able to do something and being ALLOWED to do something are two different things that you need to consider as well. Modders made a classic World of Warcraft server, but were not allowed to keep it running. But on the flipside some modders got up private Phantasy Star Online servers for Dreamcast and Gamecube, and Sega has allowed for them to continue to exist. But there is a big difference between PSO servers and Sea of Thieves servers in terms of complexity and what each is necessary for.
Anyway, I've said my piece on the subject. Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Same, never bought this for that reason.

Ah ok.
I just assumed that they could just lump the map into a folder and send it off.
But now I think about it the whole server would be a lot of strain for one PC.
Having said that, I'm sure if Microsoft put their mind to it they could find a way to make the game playable singleplayer.
I mean they would have to cut corners but I'm sure there's a way. It's whether they want to invest the time to try and do it or not, which is probably not because nobody would buy an inactive multiplayer game lol
The ending of all things in the pirate world should be made into an experience. A last storyline that would blow the sea up using kegs. all pirates would be given the salute emote in honor of the many years spent playing. Then... BOOM! it all comes to an end. I HOPE THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN ANYTIME SOON THOUGH!😁

Yes maybe the world ending would be a good way to end the game
They should just load 100 ships into one server and our dramatic send off can be the servers finally breaking under pressure \s
