  • Sword blocking slows down your movement speed through the water, which in turn reduces the sound of the splash effect when you grab onto a ladder. The purpose here is to board more silently than one would moving at full speed.

  • You can do the block jump as soon as you get to the top of the ladder and maybe evade an attack from a possible ladder guarder. Some people use it to make less noise when boarding but this isn’t too effective against a good crew.

  • It was used to allow people to silent board. That has been patched out now. But people still try it hoping it helps. Also yes, it allows you to block immediately as you come up the ladder if your sword is already out.

Others have got the answer, I just want to add that any low movement speed in the water reduced the boarding sound. Personally, I always just stayed still in the water.

Having your weapon of choice already equipped as you board is good, either you can instantly aim your gun or instantly block.

Since the boarding sound difference is gone, the reason people still do it is partially habit, partially that they want their sword out as they board, and partially because slower movement in the water makes less sound in the water even though the boarding sound is always the same.
