Add Rum

  • Now you've been lured in by the title I've been trying to reach you about your cars extended warranty...

    but nah seriously, add rum.

Edit: Idk what this started out as, but now there's actually a solid idea to discuss

make it an item that once drank will make you pass out and teleport to a random position on the map - seems like it'd be funny

  • Why's the rum gone?

  • Because back when I used to transport Devils Rum from the roar the damn kraken would always attack and break me bottles so I stopped importing.

    Fixed that for ya...

  • I mean we know rum exists. We transport it for the merchants. But would be nice to pull out a bottle. Granted I think grog serves the same purpose.

  • @cptnpotbeard grog is like the blazing sails of pirate based alcohol. how dare you suggest that :(

  • @wsurftvveeds Grog's old school recipe was water:rum at a 4:1 ratio. That puts it around 8-10%. Fancy grog would have other stuff added.

I think it serves us just fine.

Though I'm not opposed to us having more drink options available, but short of just making us drunk faster or longer I don't see a point.

  • @captain-coel does an idea this glorious need a point?

But if you want a point, make it an item that once drank will make you pass out and teleport to a random position on the map - seems like it'd be funny

  • @wsurftvveeds Maybe teleport anywhere on current island or wake up somewhere else on your boat.

  • @captain-coel yeah that could work (I've definitely not considered the balance of any of this) I feel like it'd be funnier if you teleport to "dumb" locations though, like the middle of volcanoes in the roar, top of gsd tavern, on to a skelly ship. So stuff that wouldn't really effect PvP, but would be quirky.

Kind of like the cutscenes that happen when you switch to a different character in GTA V? I like the sound of that XD

Didn't play GTA V, I think about The Witcher 3...where you wake up naked after passing out...

  • @schwammlgott wake up on your boat in a random spot with 1-3 articles of clothing removed?

  • @captain-coel sagte in Add Rum:

@schwammlgott wake up on your boat in a random spot with 1-3 articles of clothing removed?

Waking up on a random spot in the whole Sea of Thieves (maybe even on another ship 😜) with no clothes on at all

  • Eh sure but minors play the game they will get a bad effect
But its great bottles should be added
    Bottle for rum
    Tankard for grog
    Jug for beer

  • @schwammlgott another ships brig? Imagine lol

  • @wsurftvveeds I'd still rather have a pipe to smoke. But I meant that it won't add anything new outside a new container. They wouldn't make the alcohol effect any different. So as far as gameplay mechanics it would be functionally similar to grog. I agree rum is superior although I made a damn good cherry grog once with rum and it was excellent.

  • Was just reading a post about all the RAM running out...

And now we're here with all the RUM gone...

What kind of place is this!?!?!

  • Would love to see Rum added as a sort of luxury drink you can maybe pay to get for your ship!

Considering that grog is just Rum and Water getting pure rum to get you drunk faster could be fun!

That being said not sure if Rare decided to not include Rum specifically for pesky ESRB reasons...

  • My pirate my not be able to drink rum in game but I sure can also yes add rum for us to drink it can heal you by 25 health but makes you drunk

  • Grog for the crew, Rum for the Captains (if that update ever gets here)!

  • @nitroxien I wonder how the ratings feel about grog then. to me a drink is a drink. I'd like rum to have a purpose other than getting drunk though

  • @musicmee said in Add Rum:

a cold bitter rumless place apparently

  • Not gonna lie, the gimmick of the blackout is actually kind of entertaining to me. I do think it would need to be reigned in some (as opposed to what some have suggested), but generally could be a funny little addition. So, for comparative sake:

    Grog:
Drink 1: Minor Drunk Effect (slight stumble)
Drink 2: Full Drunk Effect (stumble, vision)
Drink 3+: Full Drunk and Vomit

    Rum:
    Drink 1: Full Drunk Effect
Drink 2: Full Drunk and Vomit
    Drink 3: Blackout Drunk

With the "Blackout Drunk" you would see your pirate stumble and fall to the ground (same as if you get killed) and then the screen goes black for say 5-10 seconds. In that time the game moves your character to a random spot on the Ship or Island that you're currently on. You then go through the wake up animation again when the screen comes back and you're in the new spot.

This would in effect keep both similar, while still also having them feel pretty different from one another. You could also make the Rum be a silly Gold Sink even, having the Tavern be the place that you can purchase it from (and they can have cool dialogue about their local "house brews" of it to go with their spiffy barrels they have). Maybe apply a "Chest of 1000 Grogs" type of thing to the Crates of Rum where they have a set number (albeit smaller) of times it can refill a Tankard with the Rum, slowly lowering the value of the Crate as though it were Damaged (could even just apply the Damage effects as though the drunk pirates start breaking the bottles as they finish them off).

I feel like this would actually be pretty straightforward to implement and would just be cheeky fun. It doesn't color the new alcohol in a positive light, much like Grog, as it only really hinders you in actuality. It also basically would just be making use of things already in the game with just some minor tweaks to accommodate it, so the work is basically already done.

I like the thoroughness of your post, but part of me thinks this particular part would actually be more unbalanced/overpowered than a teleport to a random useless location.

Like suppose you're mid fight on an island - that teleport would be useful in niche situations to get away and do a counter attack (plus how would you handle teleporting in to vaults etc?).

Random preset (funny) locations though... how would ending up in a volcano give you any PvP advantage? That location is basically as useful as the ferry of the damned (which should be another black out drunk location lol)

Unless you have another reason for wanting it "reigned in"?

I mean, we are talking very niche here (so niche I see no problem). First, you have to get through 3 Tankards of the Drunk to get Blackout, and it is only available via the Taverns and Crates of Rum. And you have to do this in the middle of a PvP engagement without dying before you get to this point. It certainly wouldn't be a good strategy.

As for Vaults, simple, Rare is the ones who would be setting the viable spawn locations that could be selected in each Island. I see this as no different than making sure players don't spawn back in a rock or other part of the environment. You just don't make the inside of a Vault an option.

Random preset (funny) locations though... how would ending up in a volcano give you any PvP advantage? That location is basically as useful as the ferry of the damned (which should be another black out drunk location lol)

I mean, that is exactly what I was describing. I was just pointing out that sending you to another Island is sort of pointless for something silly and cheeky (and would require other checks to be in place because otherwise this could randomly give you an advantage on a ln unsuspecting crew, whereas dumping you on your own Ship or the place you already are is less problematic in this way).

If you're already two drinks in & reach for a third mid-fight... stop. You need help.

Plus idk how effective a counter attack plan would be, if you find yourself in a random location lol.

As for the vaults part, I'm sure the devs could arrange the fancy 0s and 1s in a way that would prevent blackout teleporting in.

So funny enough after doing some drunken tdm Tuesday last night I had the idea of what if you drank a full mug of grog and it healed you to full health but you'd also have to deal with being drunk. And the time it takes to drink. Which would leave you drinking for about 6 seconds to down the mug. Could be an interesting mechanic and certainly make sword fights more interesting. We are grog swilling swashbucklers afterall.

    gave me a laugh ngl

any potential advantage would be rare
