Huge RAM usage and FPS Drops after last update

  • Rare agent sent me a message:

My apologies for the delay in resolution for your ticket and thank you for forwarding your systems DXDIAG. From viewing that I cannot see anything out of the ordinary.

I can confirm that the team are aware of a drop in performance for a small subset of players and are actively investigating improvements to this which will be rolled out for all players in a future update so please keep an eye on our social channels for any news.

Though in-case this issue is not related, and as we only have limited troubleshooting for your issue, please try the following in the meantime:

    • When you enter Windows, ensure that you are using a Microsoft account and not a local Windows account.
    • Reverify the integrity of your local game files. To do this, right click Sea of Thieves from your steam list and select properties. Then from the local files tab click 'Verify integrity of local game files'.
    • Please ensure that Sea of Thieves is using your desired graphics device through your graphics application software (such as Geforce Experience or the Nvidia Control Panel).
      -  Could you try setting the default graphics settings profile used by Sea of Thieves via your graphical application software  to the lowest values possible and then launch the game. Once in the main menu, also change your graphical settings to the lowest values and try to enter gameplay.
    • Then once in-game, try increasing all graphics options to your desired performance. Does also switching to different modes such as Windowed mode in the main menu make a difference?
    • Please also try completely remove your graphics drivers and installing them to the latest versions. It may also be worth using software which is available to ensure that these files are completely removed.

      Other system and Windows checks:
    • Disabling any overlays applied to Sea of Thieves (such as Discord, Afterburner etc. - you may keep essential overlays open if needed: Steam, Xbox Game bar etc).
    • Closing any unnecessary background processes while running Sea of Thieves
    • Checking if Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware software is affecting the performance of Sea of Thieves and adding the game executable and its folder on exclusion list.
    • Disabling CPU and GPU overclock (or lowering OC to a stable setting and using correct RAM profile/timings in Bios).
    • Please also disable any 3rd party software which may be causing any conflicts with Sea of Thieves (such as MSI afterburner). You can also boot Windows in Clean mode (which prevents 3rd party software from loading when booting) to see if you can then access the game. To do this:
  • same here, 1080TI and 40 FPS since this update.

  • @ixxxoloff I'll try the "Reverify" thing but i still think that it's not about our driver or PC. I hope they find the real issue that makes the game be laggy. Thanks for sharing this text with us btw!

  • @voexy4211 Have you tried using the Display Driver Uninstaller to completely remove the drivers? I also tried disabling data caching in the drive properties. The problem still exists of course, but I seem to have achieved the best performance you can get with the stutter issue. I hope that this problem will be completely fixed in the next updates.

  • @ixxxoloff I have completely removed the drivers and installed the latest one and It didnt make a difference. I even rolled back my drivers 2 versions back thinking maybe its the newest version having some trouble with the game but it was the same. I tried the game again just now. All graphic setting to cursed and 540p resolution and sailed. when i got next to a ship my +150 fps got down to 3 fps and the ping went to 700. Then I teleported from my ship into the depth of the ocean. Then I proceeded to hit ESC and exited game and cried.

  • @ixxxoloff I've updated my drivers but I haven't tried what you said. I don't find it logical to play around with all the computer settings for a problem they can fix with a single update. If the problem doesn't go away in any way,, only then I'll try. Because I don't have any problems while playing other games for now. Thanks for the advice tho! No SOT for me till the update comes :(

  • I wonder if all of us are on steam and if we boot the game from game pass or microsoft store the stutter is still there.

I was able to solve the problem! My game is installed on HDD. And the swap file (virtual memory) was also installed on the HDD. I set the swap file to 20 GB on the SSD and that solved my problem completely.

  • @ixxxoloff Can you specify exactly step by step how to do that?

  • @ixxxoloff How did you get the windows to recognize the SSD in the paging file drive list? I have an external SSD that game is also installed on but when I want to change the location of virtual memory it doesn’t show the SSD for me to show ot.

  • @lami-the-insane
Step 1: Press the "Win + R" key combination, type the command "systempropertiesadvanced" and press "Enter"
Step 2: You will see the system properties in front of you. In the "Performance" field, click the "Settings" button.
Step 3: While in the performance settings, select the "Advanced" tab and click "Change" in the "Virtual Memory" field
Step 4: Uncheck the "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" box. In the list of connected drives, select the drive that currently holds the page file (in our case, the system drive) and check the "No paging file" box below. Then click "Set"
Step 5: Without closing the window, select the disk to which you want to move the swap file (by clicking on it) and check the "Custom size" box below. Then specify the paging file size in the corresponding fields, or check the option "System managed size" to let Windows determine the paging file size itself and then click "Set" again. Then click the "OK" button and restart your computer.

  • @valonqarr What is your disk format? mbr or gpt?

  • @ixxxoloff I have tried it out, and it definitely helped a good bit. I was playing for 3 hours and for the first 2 there were no problems at all. I tried all scenarios - dying, going to Athena's Hideout, fighting skelly ships, doing voyages, and so on...

In my last hour of gameplay the game seemed to get a few stutters here and there, where I would teleport around, get 15 fps for a second or two... basically what was happening to us for the past few days. However, they were not constant and the game was not unplayable. The islands loaded pretty quickly, and I never got to the point where I would not even be able to go on an island because it has not loaded yet. I recommend people who have an SSD to check this out.

  • @ixxxoloff The SSD’s format is MBR.

  • @valonqarr How much free disk space do you have?

  • @ixxxoloff about 150 GB. Only sea of thieves is installed on it.

  • @ixxxoloff I read somewhere that you can’t put paging file/virtual memory on an external drive and it has to be internal but I’m not sure. Is it the case with you guys? Is your ssd internal?

  • @valonqarr Are you using usb for this disk?

  • @ixxxoloff Yes usb 3.

  • @valonqarr You need an internal ssd, through the use of which you will increase the RAM. An external drive is not suitable for this. data passes through usb, which slows down the speed.

  • @valonqarr
You have 3 options to solve the problem:

    1. Buy an internal ssd.
    2. Buy a lot of RAM
    3. Wait for the fix of the game.
  • @ixxxoloff I see. Thanks for the answers. Im broke as hell so Its option 3 for me :(
    Appreciate the help again

  • @ixxxoloff glad you sorted it and many thanks for detailing what you did for other pirates to try!

  • @sshteeve I just want to make sure it’s clear that the problem was not on his side, he only found a way to make the game playable and bypass the problem it has currently. The game (for a subset of players) uses the entirety of RAM, no matter the size and when the RAM has no more to offer it uses the paging file from the hard disk which is very much slower than the RAM, which causes the lags and stutters and interrupts the system completely. However if the paging file is on SSD it gets rid of the stutters because its faster than a HDD. The ones who have a SSD can use this trick that Ixxolof has kindly provided to us even though it will shorten the life of SSD. So the memory leak or whatever the issue is in the game at the moment definitely needs to be fixed because me and a lot of other players cannot play the game until it is.

  • @valonqarr thank you matey.
This is all key stuff that the devs need to know as well in a support ticket if you guys can add it in there for them?

    https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new

  • @sshteeve I already have, and I know other people in this post have communicated with them as well. They have said they are aware and are looking into it. Hopefully it wont take a long time.

  • Again just to explore the idea, is everyone who’s having the problem using the steam version?

  • @havaska22 Same problem, I have NVIDIA too, the same thing happens to me, please resolve, it turns out to me, UN PLAYABLE.

  • @kalek33 I managed to play when I set everything to the lowest settings, but it only worked for 2 hours then it started stuttering horribly.

  • @havaska22 I tried it too, but it didn't help much. However it is a "palliative" method, after a few hours the problem starts again, and the only solution is to restart the Game/PC. It is not possible, I hope they resolve.

So you can set your page file to use your SSD instead?

I should do this even though I have 32gb of RAM.

Other games might benefit from this. Honestly, I wouldn't have thought of doing this.

  • @personalc0ffee So yes you can set your paging file to use on SSD but from what I have been reading it will reduce the ssd’s lifespan. But another thing to note is that paging file is only used if all the RAM is being used 100%, which I highly doubt it will happen for you because you have 32 GB which should be more than enough. But with this current SoT problem which uses all the ram regardless pf your ram size, putting the paging file on ssd will help and eliminate the stutter…but just for an hour or two.

Couldn't you just restart the game, though?

  • @personalc0ffee Im not sure maybe that works I haven’t done it.

  • I mean, we're talking about a memory leak here, right? Or is this something else?
