Legend of the Veil

  • The Legend of the Veil is a great voyage. I love the modular design, the visuals, and especially the music.
The modular design makes sure I don't get bored, because every voyage is different. I've had a Sudds map that puzzled my entire crew, thankfully I knew where it was (North side of Lone Cove). So the design makes sure that only the most knowledgeable, explorative pirates can get consistently good times on the voyage. And the commendations make sure I don't use any of the fastest ways to level up, because any other way would not be progressing the commenations.
The visuals and music make me want to keep playing the voyage so I can see/hear the beauty more often.

But... Where's the rewards I should be striving for?
My personal usage of the new rewards
For me personally, and probably a lot of other grinders out there, I don't really want any of the new cosmetics in this update. If we're counting titles, Vanguard of Athena's Fortune is a nice one.

    • New Legendary Weapons: These are the best things to come from Legend of the Veil. Tying them to levels this high makes them feel balanced enough as a recolor. One problem: I have the originals and don't care about the new versions.
    • Ancient Ship: The ancient ship is okay. It does seem to give an ancient feel. But the cannons are literal squares and the colors strike me as all over the place. The colors seem right for ancients, but it's just not something I like.
    • Ancient Weapons: The same as the ship. Gives an ancient feel, but the colors are weird to me and the pistol looks to be bad to aim.
    • Ancient Costume: Most players don't like costumes. Many players dislike glowing cosmetics. This is both, so I don't see how it's going to be used very often or even how it's a level 30 reward. Want an example of good max level rewards? The Ghost Hat and Ghost Cutlass were amazing max level rewards for their respective time periods. They were the main reason I even grinded AF back at those times.
    • The Servant of the Flame's Hat and Cutlass: These are Reaper cosmetics. Why are they Athena's Fortune rewards? Maybe because Rare knew they didn't have many cosmetics for this update?
    • Pirate Lord's Pegleg: A cool cosmetic. Too bad that it's really easy to unlock. It seems like another item to shove into this update to make the rewards seem better.

    How would I change things?
Given the chance to change things, I would opt for one or a combination of some of these ideas:

    • Legend of the Veil Song: Give us the song to play for Grade V of completing LotV voyages. It's such a great theme, I'd like to hear it wherever I am on the seas.
    • Curse of Graymarrow: An accidental glitch once caused the asset for a "Curse of Graymarrow" to be shown in someone's vanity chest. It's the Ghost Curse that everyone has been wanting for a while now. Hopefully we see it soon. It would be the ultimate bravery cosmetic.
    • "* of the damned" cosmetics: We have received a few of these from the APL tall tales; it would be nice to see these in the future.
    • Ancient Equipment: We got a ship, clothes, weapons, but no equipment? At least complete the set.
    • Ghost Recolor: There are recolors of the Ghost set still in the Rare vault. When are we going to get all of them if not in "the" Athena's Fortune update?
    • NPC cosmetics: If we're being given the Pirate Lord's pegleg, why not allow us to get the unique clothing that some of the NPC's wear? That would be a better reward than giving away reaper cosmetics.

  • They should add the rest of The Damned stuff for the new seaforts, it would make sense with all the phantoms there and would give an actual reason to do them, i agree with the rest though, new shanties are always welcome, hopefully they will atleast add some actual pl cosmetics to this voyage or the extra 10 levels cuz the ancient stuff feels underwhelming, out of place and is yet again an incomplete set. Doubt they will though add more though, the emporium sure is their priority cosmetic wise.

  • This voyage is excellent when it comes to what athena needed for survival.

It's pumping out high level athena flags which leads to more emissary quests and a lot more athena loot in circulation as well as making the time requirement more realistic for a session based game. More gold as well.

It needed to be to athena what shipwreck voyages are to merchant and it is. Very very pleased with how it turned out and excited to see it work out well.

  • @wolfmanbush
True, but in practice, players don't grind because the grind is fun, they grind because they want a certain reward. Once the voyage stops being fun for those players, unless they are grinders, they're not going to play it anymore.
The voyage does have a lot of staying power, but only time will tell if it's more enticing than the A20 update... that had a big Athena update too, with better rewards (though bad replayability).

Considering the lore tie-in that the new voyage has, I could see Athena's Fortune having more lore tie-ins in the future that make the company more interesting and more rewarding, but no one knows what Rare is planning.

  • The voyage is absolutely amazing.

But yes the rewards definitely felt like a load of cosmetics just cobbled together.

The Ancients shipset and stuff should be rewarded for the Voyage itself.

We should have gotten a new Athena set, with the Green and purple theme for a level 30 reward and not just another stupid costume

  • I can't steal someone's Time Stone :(

Why am I complaining? I took the rest of their loot instead!

    The Tornado was sick, though

  • Your rewards are..... Ghost loot and very few athena loot some of which are extremely rare like the secret keeper and theres commendations to sell like 100 of them or more which would probably take over 1000 voyages. They really love making us grind for stuff. They dont seem to understand once people hit max level or have good ledger standing for the month or even renown 100 for the season it really lessens the desire to play as we are just slowly plucking away at a long tedious achievement while making no other progress.

Its like during the joke that was pirate legend week (weekend rare, END) double rep and gold as well as rep when selling various loot to other trade companies. Well I have been athena 20 for a long time. Got renown 100 in the first 2 weeks of the season. So ive just been working on my ledgers every month but I hadnt touched athena this month because why would I waste my time grinding more thieves haven when we have a new voyage coming that we are gonna have to grind the cr@p out of (still dont know why that nice word version of the S word is a swear, please fix your site). Also loved how in the trailer they didnt show the loot because its a few little trinkets, 1 athena chest, hidden behind a bunch of garbage ghost loot that we have been getting awarded since ghost ships were added

I agree, what's the point of some events, but I did get a cool eyepatch. That event was more to help non A20 players to get some rep before the cap increase.

Yeah, it isn't a lot of loot, but you don't have to spend much time, either. Beforehand, if you were serious about doing AF, you'd have to 2 Athena Runs (in most cases, sometimes you get enough PvE to get 5) and then you were grade 5 and could do the emissary quest strategy. It was like a 2 hour buy-in for grade 5 and then 1-2 hours of emissary questing. Now you can just hop in for an hour and do a whole voyage. the loot is scarce, but they made sure it was balanced for the time spent, so I'm fine with it. There's no need to make A1-20 extremely easy.

  • I too am loving this new voyage.
Only bad parts about the loot thus far for myself are the consistent disappearance of loot items during the final part of the voyage.
Like don't sell the new skulls you get before putting in the last masks gem else yoink the mask goes bye bye.
Also don't finish the voyage by putting the last gem in the mask with any Athena loot in a chest else yoink that all goes bye bye too.
    Aside from that it's amazing.

  • Thought i was going crazy or something, geuss i’m not the only one with loot disappearing.

  • I like the story of the new voyage and what you have to do to finish the quest.. How ever being hunted by everyone else on the server while trying to finish the last fight is total buzz kill.. I have yet to finish to the last part of the voyage because everyone else just being out for themselves.

  • @killzone1401 I found last night that if your crew is holding the loot it doesn't disappear

  • @tenkaar
Personally I haven't had anyone attack me during the voyage. I had 2 Reapers on my server yesterday and I guess they didn't see the tornado, because they never came for us.

The LotV commendations are what I'm going for, but it's probably a great time to do FoF honestly.

  • @grumpyw01f sagte in Legend of the Veil:

I wonder this too, why reaper stuff is in there...
But not many cosmetics? New shipset...new weapons, two sets of them...you should know by now we get almost every month new stuff and I think these sets will be finished with tools sometime in the future...no problem we don’t get the complete set in one go...
Also we got the new voyage and an awesome adventure fight...
All togeher a very good update imo...
