SteamDeck version

  • Sea of Thieves is optimized for Xbox Series S by being more than 50% smaller in terms of install size. I don't know how the devs did it, but it's a hint for me that a SteamDeck optimized version could be possible. Valve already lists this game as "playable on Deck" and my only wish is if the devs could find a way to make it 20GB on Deck, like it's on Series S. I don't know what exactly makes the game smaller on Series S (PC version is 70GB, I believe) but if it's textures, perhaps it would be possible to make a "setting" in game to download high-res textures (like HALO Infinite does it) for people with a screen resolution higher than 1080p?

Basically, I am requesting that Sea of Thieves SteamDeck install size is as small as possible.

"Playable" means it technically runs but there is no official support and parts of it might be broken. Since it's not officially supported (yet?), I don't think a reduced filesize version is in the cards any time soon.

Perhaps you misunderstood me, but maybe it's my fault. A lot of PC's have a FullHD monitor (majority, if Steam charts are to be believed) and it would be fantastic for most PC gamers to give them an option to install the game with FullHD-worthy textures quality if that's what makes the SeriesS install-size so small. Indirectly, this would help with small SteamDeck storage.

  • @darthchillash correct, but what @D3ADST1CK is saying is that while a steamdeck can run Sea of Thieves the game is notorious for having issues running on Linux. Linux is not a natively supported platform which means the steamdeck is not a supported platform.

  • @captain-coel then perhaps it would be wise of me to change the topic to "make PC install size optionally smaller" :-D

You do realize there is also an Xbox One version that is similar in file size to the Series S, right?

The size is smaller on these versions than the Series X and PC versions is because they don't require the 4K textures. So IF Rare wanted to do it, they could since the Steamdeck would not require those textures. It could even be smaller since that system only displays 720p anyway so no need for 1080p textures either.

  • @darthchillash see now your thinking. Also I never realized the instal size for the series s was that much smaller. I only play on pc and if I'm traveling the series x.

  • @dlchief58 exactly that! like people already pointed out, perhaps it wasn't a smart idea to put SteamDeck into the title of the thread, but rather ask for high-res textures to become optional on PC. I believe that a lot of PC gamers would like such a feature. Perhaps PC storage isn't all that expensive, but why use 70GB of your HDD/SSD if it looks the same on your FullHD monitor as the 20GB version. That's, basically, what is the goal. I think HALO Infinite did a perfect job with precisely that.

  • @captain-coel yeah, my Series S reports 26GB for this game.
