  • @z3phlar Eh things change, it's likely because of ratings. Knowing how that stuff works I wouldn't be surprised if smoking would push the games rating up, which they probably don't want

  • in a Mature game it doesn't matter to me. Adults can figure it out. This isn't a game that caters to adults it caters to all types and heavily to minors and families.

The entire point of smoking in this game would be people thinking it looks cool and I think adding things that are clearly dangerous to personal health entirely for the "cool factor" is a waste of resources when so many of the participants are children/minors.

Yeah yeah drinking grog. I didn't add it so I'm not gonna defend it.
Yeah yeah shooting/killing pirates. It's competitive combat no different than paintball. It's not graphic and it's just competitive play.

This game is an immersive and personal experience which makes something like smoking more significant than just seeing a character somewhere smoking.

  • @peony7185 I'm not really sure if having a pipe would raise the game rating.
There are plenty of games that are +3 or +7 where characters have pipes or similar... but not sure if it would.

  • @jumli7 I believe it's more of a case of what else is in the game. So while other games might have smoking they might not also have drinking alcohol and getting drunk.

Game ratings are really strange and kinda stupid with how they work so it really wouldn't surprise me if it had something to do with it

  • @z3phlar Your post has been edited as it goes against the Forum Rules and Pirate Code.

    ALWAYS:

Be courteous. Don’t insult players you don’t know. If humour is the intent, remember that this can be lost or misinterpreted online, and words can very easily offend. Be mindful of what you’re saying and if someone asks a question, see if you can help them out as you’d appreciate being helped out yourself if the roles were reversed.

Name calling, personal attacks and using derogatory language against Community Members, Rare Employees, Global Moderators or Deckhands is not acceptable. Using such language will result in a warning, then temporary ban from the Forums and a final warning. If the action is persistent or increasingly aggressive, a permanent ban from the Forums will be issued.

Please read and abide by the Forum Rules and Pirate Code in future.

    Thank you.

  • @triheadedmonkey wow. I guess the ratings suggestion really is the issue cuz seems like these forums are meant for grade school kids if you can't even use the word liar. Can't imagine being that soft.

  • @z3phlar Imagine being told not to insult people and then immediately insulting people lol

  • Pirates used to do that but this is a great game. Don't kill the core. People irl will have bad effects.

  • @peony7185 Well these days it doesn't take much does it?

  • @z3phlar The Rules and Pirate Code are available for all to see.

Common Courtesy and Decency are also available for all, though rarely used by some.

All Sea of Thieves social spaces are family friendly.

    Please act accordingly.

  • @triheadedmonkey Sure thing monkey man.

  • @wolfmanbush could please tell me how this game caters to minors and families? makes zero sense to me…

  • @madfrito99 It's a goofy cartoony pirate game in a world where people can't die and the main enemies are skeletons and there's no blood and is centered around co-op, if that doesn't sound like a game that's targeted for a wide range of ages and families then I don't know what does

The silly looking pirates, the colors, the hot mics, the cosmetics so often being bulky, loud and power rangerish. It's aimed at a younger crowd like a toy in a happy meal. It's drawing in younger people to come hang out and be goofy in the goofy game where people can be goofy on mics.

Having a cartoony art style does not automatically mean its for kids.

Thats like saying south park and family guy are for kids because theyre colorful and goofy. Yes Sea of Thieves is be catering to all ages so they can attract a wider audience, but it being goofy and colorful has got nothing to do with who its target audience.

Other than someone having some mild fun with the captain name generator the context of the content in this game is consistent in its approach to offering a family friendly/young person friendly environment. Welcoming to everyone doesn't mean they don't market for specific demographics, Younger people being a pretty obvious one.

I think you missed my point, I said that a game having a goofy and colorful art style has nothing to do with a game's target audience like you implied.

Of course Sea of Thieves includes kids among their target audiences but like you said, the game is welcoming to everyone.

  • If you want to smoke. Start a fire

  • @alienmagi I don't think he's saying it's just for kids, like he said it's targeting a family friendly audience meaning anybody including younger people

  • @alienmagi said in 4 Years Ago a Rare Employee said we would have smoking pipes/cigars:

Of course Sea of Thieves includes kids among their target audiences. Like you said, the game is welcoming to everyone. Not just kids.

It seems that you are focused on the fact that some people enjoy things that kids also enjoy which was never something I was pushing against.

I brought up a toy in a happy meal specifically because that is the marketing style that happens in this game. Everyone likes food and a lot of people enjoy fast food and some adults like toys and certain colors but it's still a very specific marketing style to a younger crowd intentionally.

It appeals to younger people which then brings in their parents/guardians/family as well. That's the strategy of the marketing. Bring in the young people and get the people around them.

This is all relevant because we are talking about bringing in an adult activity into a game with that marketing style. An adult activity with a high chance of personal consequences that is not actually bringing anything of substance into the game other than people thinking it's a cool thing to see/do.

Addictions to smoking were amplified significantly by marketing to young people and making it look cool. Adding it to this game is like making candy cigarettes. Why do that?

I don't think this game intends to participate in that sort of thing and imo it would be a mistake to bring it into this specific experience.

  • I'm not against it, as long as they don't create a technology that transmits smells, I particularly hate the smell of anything smoking related.

  • What if we had a bubble blower pipe that made you see things like unicorns and rainbows? That wouldn't break the age rating, right?

  • @z3phlar It's not about being soft. It's about upholding our values and The Pirate Code which include respecting those we share a space with, players and devs alike. Namecalling will not be tolerated.

Also keep in mind that things change all the time in game development, especially as live game as serivce such as ours. Roadmaps and tools change, concepts get picked up and put aside and that will always be the case.

  • @wolfmanbush wasnt sure what your response was going to be but your right. however, a kid (under 10) could not play this game…hence why most players are teenagers and adults…weird hunh? kid looking game where the majority of players arent kids lol

  • Well.........I would have no issue with it personally.

The game is rated 12. Twelve. TWELVE!!!

So why on earth do I keep ending up in crews with people who definitely do not sound like they are above the age of 12? Anyway that's irrelevant.

The issue with cigars is that they are VERY harmful (IRL) and younger people may be more likely to catch on, especially if it's portrayed as something good. Which is the main argument against.

Now I will say right now I disagree with the whole age rating system and I think it's a load of rubbish, and I think the appropriateness of a game changes person to person. But unfortunately because how society works, some things just 'cant' be shown to younger people.

The reason grog is okay is, I would assume, it is generally detrimental to gameplay and used for comedic purpose. I don't see how cigars could be implemented to make them a joke.

But then again, if they were added and the ratings jumped slightly, I probably wouldn't complain. That would mean I'm more likely to find a competent crew which isn't comprised of 8 year olds lol.

So yeah, we probably don't need cigars and probably won't see them. But if they did get added for whatever reason I have no objections.

  • @madfrito99 You do know that many consider teenagers kids right?

  • @peony7185 true…but cartoons like this are more kid then teenager is my point lol also alcohol is dangerous as well so if alcohol is in the game might as well have cigars

Ah yes just carry a campfire around with you r/thanksimcured

I swear I've never seen a forum group that answers with the most r/thanksimcured responses than this forum...

  • @gallerine5582

So far your only one to respond with it. :P
and who said carry a campfire? Ever use firebomb on a skeleton or set ship on fire? Nothing beats a walking skeleton, burning and puff of smoke. That some good stuff.

Mike Chapman hasn't lied. There are signs of smoking pipes, cigars, ash trays, etc. everywhere. They are in the game. Most notably are the burn marks from a double smoking pipe left behind by "The Captain" at the Brotherhood's meeting table. You can thank Captain Falcore for that one. 😉

But that's not what Mike said. He said you'd be able to smoke a pipe, not that they would exist in the game world.

Yeah, okay, but that doesn't change the fact that plans do change over time. What was said then may no longer apply now, as Meroviel, a Rare employee, has already pointed out in this very thread...

  • @z3phlar maybe it was planned first, but then they realized it would change the ratings in some countries...so they were forced to cancel that...
So that employee just didn't know it better...
Did you ever think of that?
