Silent Boarding

  • Is it my imagination or does silent board seem to be back in the game since the latest update? I know it still happened sometimes after they fixed it, but these past couple weekends I’ve noticed people silent boarding with alarming regularity for something that’s not supposed to exist in the game anymore.

  • I don't keep up on the exploit side of things but as far as bugs go there are just a lot of general bugs and audio bugs right now that kind of come and go as they please including boarding sounds from what I have experienced.

  • I’ve definitely experienced some recently, haven’t tried to do it myself yet though.

  • I've always noticed and used it. Never felt any difference.

  • Wouldn't surprise me, Rare sucks at patching bugs

Do you mean the thing where if you grab the ladder while underwater it doesn't make a sound?

  • How silent can they be?
If your battling a enemy player ship, it’s always expected you be boarded. Be on the look out.

  • The only way you can be unaware of someone boarding at this point is if you're distracted at the ladder for someone to board.

I don't think anyone has really tried to mention it, but the enemy can hear the sound of silent boarding, it's an extremely subtle sound compared to the loud splash you're used to, but when you're used to that sound, the only way you can get silent boarded is if you're pressured or not paying attention to the situation.

You should notice someone being able to sword lunge towards your ladder, if a ship is dangerously close to you or if you're chasing someone, they can just jump off of their boat and silent board to climb, and of course, you can tell if a pirate is being launched out of a cannon, with a distinct sound and seeing a pirate in mid-air.

Silent boarding is a valid complaint, but it's not impossible to avoid, and in someways, is some form of skill gap that tells a very experienced player from another.

  • @gravesilence272 Well it’s not necessarily grabbing the ladder while you’re underwater. My understanding for how it used to work was it had to do with the movement speed of your pirate. If you were moving below a certain speed when you grabbed a ladder from the water it wouldn’t make the loud splash noise it’s supposed to make and thus made it harder for the boat you’re boarding to realize you are.

  • @burnbacon Yeah I mean it’s not that I haven’t been on the lookout. I’m catching the boarders. It’s more I’ve just been surprised to not hear the noise even when I know they’ve grabbed the ladder and that it seems to be happening with great frequency. So I was thinking maybe the most recent update broke the fix they implemented and was wondering if anyone else had been noticing similar.

Keep in mind that the increased frequency has likely come from people watching content creators pull this off consistently, and the closure of arena, meaning more skilled players are boarding this way to secure their wins, You have to be on your guard and sharpen your PvP skills.

  • @nex-stargaze My point is after the patch you were no longer able to pull it off consistently. Silent boards were basically not a thing anymore and when they did happen it was seemingly random. Then the past weekend I watched a guy get one like 5 times in a row. Which seemed to suggest either the fix Rare implemented got broken with the recent update or people found a new way around it. This isn’t me complaining or about my ability to defend it. I have over 2,700 hours in to the game. I can handle a boarder. I’m just making an observation about what seemed to be a change in the way the game was working.

  • Was it ever officially deemed by a developer to be a bug? Link if so.

Well they said they fixed it (or tried to) about 4 months ago.

Nice, honestly for the better. This bug still exists and I will report it.

Although, there is no mention of the other method whereby you can get the silent board by not moving while in the water.

Fixed (maybe) in update 2.3.2: https://www.seaofthieves.com/release-notes/2.3.2

    Fixed Issues
    Visual and Audio

When boarding a ship from the sea, players are no longer able to muffle the boarding audio effects by grabbing the ladder while underwater or while using equipment, ensuring nearby players will always hear someone boarding from the ocean.
