Character Creation in 2022

  • I have been creating my SoT character for around four to five days now, taking a deep dive into turmoil and frustration.

The “Infinite Pirate Generator” is a seemingly useful tool for players who would like to discover a randomized assortment of features on a character they never know they could get hooked into; however, many (including myself) argue that this was a poor general decision as it leaves out other players who may already have ideas for creations. This in turn, forces many of us to test our patience, luck, sanity, and time in the generator.

There are just too many factors to consider, when searching for the perfect pirate for you. You have to be cognizant of: age, gender, head type, body type, skin tone, eyebrow type, eye shape, eye color, lip type, makeup, Hero or Rogue personality type, and anything else that was not listed (hair and hair color excluded, as this is a changeable feature later on in-game).

I already know what I want my pirate to look like, but I will reiterate how I’ve been here for almost a week, endlessly searching to no avail.

I propose an idea. Completely rework or remove the Infinite Pirate Generator. Implement a new or revamped system that allows players to fully customize everything that is changeable in the Pirate Appearance menus. I’m a growing fan of this game, but the absence of manual character creation is a huge problem for me and I know it is for others as well.

    Thanks,
    Sarah 🖤

  • I mean, personally, i like the randomness of it. The Generator kinda forces you to (usually) settle for something you may not have totally wanted. It's fitting for a game that has both PvP and PvE, and how, based on your playstyle, you have to sometimes have to take the sinks, or the lack of fighting. And over time, you may grow to accept both of these playstyles, and change your ideas about them. And maybe start to like what was originally unappealing

I know, i'm being a bit of a armchair philosopher, but i think it's part of the magic of this game that you sometimes just have to deal with the sometimes unpleasant features. Hence why i'm kinda against trying to make a perfect character.

It's a stretch, but it's kinda like how some players want PvE servers, or the ability to PvP others more easily. Both of these sides choose to only do one part of the game, eliminating what is, in their opinion, ugly. These players want the game to be perfect (for them) and refuse to take the compromise, at least in their minds.

Anyways, i'm getting too ranty. I'll stop here.

    Sincerly,
    A gold lover

I think so too, as much as having a randomized character creation is unique, it could have some improvements too.
For example, being able to have multiple characters, a list of favorites, generate similar characters based on the ones you click "X" on, LT for previous page, etc.
A manual character customization would be the best solution though, it would give us more options, while having a completely rng based system could have us looking for a character we're satisfied with for hours.

  • @sliccsarah your pirate is not meant to be perfect. You are meant to be forced from your comfort zone. Sounds like its working as intended.

  • Rare even mentioned that they dont want to focus too much on looks, which doesnt make sense since the whole game is based on looks.
After hours looking for a good character i ended up going with a decent looking one, and then eventually deleted it to make a new one because i wasnt satisfied with it.
we need multiple characters, and more options with the pirate customization.

  • @el-spaniardchi This seems more like it divides the community. Not everyone is for this randomized character creation. It’s rather unfortunate that this is the move that was made regarding how players expressed themselves via creating their character.

Not everyone will have patience to sit in the “Change Pirate Appearance” menus for days, searching for one specific pirate.

I mean, if someone has to spend days looking for essentially a computer/xbox game model, they might want to get their priorities straight

I myself took a decent amount of time to find my character, but that was maybe 30 minutes. I think that's a good benchmark for how long it should take to find one

  • @el-spaniardchi
30 mins or days, its still completely rng based, it coulve been 10 mins for everyone and end up with a good character if there was a manual character customization.

  • @el-spaniardchi op’s point is to revamp the system so that they, along with many others, can have their character looking the way they want it to look. priorities wouldnt need straightening had this flawed system not been implemented

As far as i know, the reason Rare opted for the rng based system was to prevent people from making their own "abominations" as that happens very often in games with fully customisable characters. Hence why the system has remained for 4 years.

Rare would rather have multiple unique random characters than Barbie, Chad, and some SCP running around the seas.

  • @el-spaniardchi
yes it does open the possibility of crating a goofy character but what harm does that do? look at dark souls, people have cool characters and other people have bright purple characters with big noses and big eyes and everyone is enjoying the game.

Flawed is a strong word for something that is ultimately a matter of opinion.

  • I think people often forget how much of selling point it was when the game came out. Rare put a lot of work into the IPG, and it’s working the way they intended it to. You’re not supposed to be able to create the “perfect”character, you’re supposed to settle with a imperfect Pirate, like so many of us have.

I think it’s a good thing Rare doesn’t have the normal character selection screen, if they did we’d have more look-a-likes and less individuality. In fact, most of Rare does is different from other games, and I think that helps it stand out in a sea of copycats.

  • @el-spaniardchi
If its not flawed then at least it could be improved, with more options

  • @scrim1533 3rd wheel, 3rd pirate to the right. Thats when i found my scallywag. Hes anything but perfect, but hes mine. Hes gpt missing teeth and a nose that got flatten by errant shovel in a chest digging competition.

He is not the character I would jave designed, but I wouldnt change him for anything

  • @captain-coel ???

That depends on what you mean by options. If you mean sliders to change certain character feature then no. If you mean filters to better help you find what you're looking for, then that better (although personally i think a gender filter would be enough).

  • @el-spaniardchi
yeah thats what i mean, along with the examples in my other reply, i think a way to filter and narrow down the character type would be huge.

  • I agree that the head and face should be generated separately as height and physique

I really think that only the gender filter should be a option, as most people already have that made up in there minds. Other filters might give too much power to the player.

  • @captain-coel where is it stated that your character is not to be said “perfect” or in this sense, imperfect? if i could change the way my guy looks, i’d enjoy the sot experience more but i’m stuck wearing the reaper outfit to cover up that mess, losing interest and feeling disconnected from my dude. if you didn’t want people complaining about the current system, which has been ongoing for years, Rare should have had limited number of premade characters, similar to franchises like dead island, doom, dying light, etc.

it lacks in sense to throw a character creation in the form of randomization. most people arent going to like this, which is why previous forums posts have targeted the infinite generator. Titles like destiny 1/2, day z, saints row, division 1/2, GTA V, ETC have systems that allow players to personalize their characters the way they want, not the way rng wants

  • @el-spaniardchi a gender filter? only a gender filter would suffice? Good lord help me

  • @xoaw you can always change your character using the Pirate Appearance potion in the Pirate Emporium. It’s only like $1.50 so pretty cheap.

  • @xoaw said in Character Creation in 2022:

@el-spaniardchi a gender filter? only a gender filter would suffice? Good lord help me

It eliminates half of the options, what more do you want?

  • @ninja-naranja i couldnt care for lookalikes. i want my character looking the way i want him to look, not the way rng wants it. Manual character creation has been prevalent for years. i honestly cannot think of a game that has made forced players to randomly create their character. that’s kind of awful

  • @xoaw here is an article/interview from nearly 4 years ago

it talks about how the design was to keep pirates fitting the theme of the game.

  • @xoaw I’d take this over only being able to look like a bunch of presets. That actually gives you less options, not more.

I feel much more connected to my SoT character than I do with most games that just have a small amount of presets.

Rare isn’t going to change this system because this is what they wanted for this game.

  • @ninja-naranja
that will just send them back to the first problem, finding a character which is what this whole thing is about

  • @scrim1533 fair, but I’d take a potion if I thought I had to wear the reaper pajamas to cover myself up.

  • @el-spaniardchi “You have to be cognizant of: age, gender, head type, body type, skin tone, eyebrow type, eye shape, eye color, lip type, makeup, Hero or Rogue personality type, and anything else that was not listed (hair and hair color excluded, as this is a changeable feature later on in-game).”

the thing op missed was the teeth... so there’s twelve changeable features?

add a gender filter, and it only solved one changeable feature

what if i wanted a girl pirate to be young, no scars, slim body, eyeshadow, lipstick, hero type, green eyes, and pale, with a nicely shaped head? the only thing the gender filter covered was gender, meaning i’ll constantly see a randomization of eleven features. it’s hilarious how long i’ll be there looking for the pirate

  • @ninja-naranja
if the presets exist then its possible, and being able to choose what you want would save a ton of time.
maybe we could keep the current system, get a character as a base and chnage small features of it, or just have the AI generate more characters similar to the ones you click "X" on, as i mentioned before.
That way, its easier to find what youre looking for, while seeing more variations that you may be interested in

  • @scrim1533 presets don’t guarantee you can get what you want, just makes settling (which is what people do now) easier. And less individuality.

  • @captain-coel as i said. not everyone is for this, i already see some comments agreeing with the post, and my opinion wont change. they really need to do something about ipg. when i read “four to five days”, i lol’d i don’t have the patience for that.

this isnt mentioning other forum posts of users complaining about how they’d been there for similar amounts of time. it clearly needs some work. if im not connected to my character, no point in playing

  • @scrim1533 dark souls is another good one

  • @xoaw said in Character Creation in 2022:

If you want that many filters than i might as well give you the sliders. You don't want minor character selection, you full on want to choose everything!
