I can agree that there won't be a ton of motivation to change commendations, but in my opinion it should have been this way from the beginning. What sense does it make for a commendation to show you the tracking for a stat and then ceasing to do so after completing it? I think a change like this would be low cost and be low reward for some and high reward for others who would like to see the numbers that they've been denied access to for the past 4 years. Think about it, somewhere, someplace, there is a server that knows exactly how many Maruader's Chests that @El-Spaniardchi has sold in their game lifetime, and you can't see that number unless the devs decide to give it to you (this made me think of a con, go look at OP). I just think that we all should have access to all of our numbers after it has reached the commendation cap.
Especially since some people will go too wild and try to reach 1000 cannon kills or even 10,000.
I think, if damage were to be done with stats, the damage is already done with the stats here on the site, the stats on achievements, and the stats for days played. So my suggestion wouldn't make more hyper-completionists in my opinion.
Better to have cosmetics as a flex than have numbers as a flex.
If I only cared about cosmetics as a flex, I would have quit a year ago (that's an exaggeration of course, because of game experiences). All I can really work towards lately is completing the season's stuff, then watching my gold and doubloon numbers go up. I believe that people get the cosmetics they want and then focus on getting numbers as a flex. Titles are a number flex, commendations are a number flex, and gold/doubloons are number flexes.
It's probably personal preference tbh. I am very much a collector in SoT, and love hoarding cosmetics that i will probably never use (unless they are basic shop cosmetics and their reskins, such as admiral, blige rat, e.t.c. i don't really buy those).
Knowing the number of kills or Mauraders chests, in your example, is more of a "oh, i handed in x amount of chest, that's cool i guess" than anything else. I only start to care when there's a cosmetic involved (in this case, a title for 280 marauders chest, i believe).
Even though it's a title i will probably put on for 30 seconds and never use again, it's still more important to me than knowing that, let's say, i handed in 781 marauders chests.
In fact, even if it's a comendation that offers no reward for it's completion, (like the one for handing in broken reaper flags) it's nice to have out of the way, and know it's finished.
I honestly am pretty neutral about this, it's more that i prefer games where they have a end to certain stats or whatever, and don't carry on infinitely imo. I'm fine with the current system, and would rather have Rare use their time to make more cosmetics or experiences, than track pretty meaningless stats imo.
