Lately I have been finding on YouTube, many players using programs to increase the fov to 110 or 120. Is this considered cheating right? but there is no anti cheat on sea of thieves that recognizes these programs as cheats, so skilled players using these programs have a huge advantage over other players. I tested one of the programs that increases the fov, and it is really easy to use, also on steam and on various forums there are many guides on how to use the programs. Now, reporting who uses these programs is practically useless, because you don't know what they are called in game, and I don't know that players have ever been banned for increasing fov. Now I ask myself, at this point, either insert an anti cheat that works, or give everyone the possibility to increase the fov up to a maximum of 100 or 110
The problem with the fov, please Rare, you have to make up your own mind
@captainvin2820 are the videos slightly old? There was a way to manipulate game files on the Steam version for a higher fov but that was patched out as it was considered cheating.
i cant quite remember when but 6 months feels about right in my head.

Yeah it was in June of last year... https://www.seaofthieves.com/release-notes/2.2.0
I am not sure if there's a new way to do it, but if so, it's only a matter of time before it's patched out.
I would be surprised if there was a anti cheat that could prevent FoV cheating or could prevent all sorts of cheats from being used. People will always find a way around a prohibition but that isn't a reason to let them do as they want.
FoF is locked (like this post will be soon) at 90 because any higher wouldn't be compatible with xbox one and devs try to keep the game fair for everyone if possible.
There are still ways to get +90 FoV, or at least the though doesn't sound unreasonable. After they fixed it for steam clients, old crew mate of mine told me how it can still be done. Sadly I never reported it as I wasn't sure if it was true or not as I do not own both MS and Steam versions that it required and couldn't test it.

There are new ways to do it and this time it’s using actual cheat software. There’s some videos floating around on YouTube but they usually cover their name.

Seen this recently with "TDM montages" from as recent as December and some pushing it to 130 FOV this time. Seems to be using a free open source cheat community to distribute. Hopefully since it's free and since Rare's anti-cheat is in-house, they can get a copy of it and reverse engineer to find detection methods.
@kommodoreyenser it’s quite bad what they’re doing. I’ve seen some push to a fov of around 160 with whatever they’re using. They likely have access to all sorts of things. Hopefully Rare can stop it.

Nah, there is legit external software that can be used to increase the FOV. I have a guy on my Stream's Discord community who was bragging about it just last week.
I bet that Rare knows about this. My take on this is that using ANY external programs to edit or manipulate game files is against the ToS.
Some people complain that the FoV of Sea of Thieves is too low. I absolutely don't agree with that statement:
- First of all, Sea of Thieves is not designed as a competitive shooter and meant more to be a casual coop adventure game.
- Secondly, the FoV is designed to be where it is now as to not take up more GPU resources. More FoV means more stuff on screen which needs to be rendered.
(Take into consideration that XBOX One is also a supported device)
Edit:
As @ScurvyWoof pointed out, only after the FoV glitch was discovered, people really started to complain about motion sickness. What’s funny about the FoV debate that’s been going on since the 120 FoV was patched, is that people were saying that the motion sickness argument wasn’t coming until the FoV glitch/ cheat. It never came up before because it wasn’t relevant before then!
But, back on point. If people are doing it now, it is most definitely cheating. The Steam glitch was patched and it can now only be done by injecting game code or hacked clients, maybe other things that I don’t know of too.People can just buy an ultrawide monitor that gives them a FoV even bigger than 120 due to their resolutions. This is not cheating, its the basics of how monitors work and its why artificially limiting a FoV in games is bad.
Now, instead of everyone having this option, only ultrawide monitor users have the so called "advantage" which i would just call basic accessibility.

Oddly enough I asked people that made this specific statement to find out their reasoning.
It's basically motion sickness due to forced FoV whiplash since most (PC) FPS games they play go up pretty high, and SoT's FoV not only having it's max to 90, but also not being the native 90 FoV that other games have, people being forced to use a FoV they are not immediately comfortable with will give them motion sickness. Weird but like, it makes sense to some degree.
@nex-stargaze its not just a matter of being used to a certain FoV. PC gamers need a higher FoV because they sit closer to their screens while console users sit far away from their TV's where a lower field of view would be more comfortable.
If the fov its too low it makes it seem like you're playing with binoculars stuck to your eyes which literally affects the brain and causes headaches. This is not a theory or an excuse but an actual scientific fact. This has been a problem for pc gaming long before SoT existed and its the main reason why game developers started to include a slider.
Try playing the game on 70 FoV and see how you like it. Now imagine being forced to play this way just because you bought a larger 16:9 monitor.
Meanwhile someone with an ultrawide monitor can easily enjoy a massive fov well above 120 degrees because the game auto-adjusts it due to the monitor's wide resolution.
This is just ridiculous, there is no reason not to let us put the slider all the way to 360 degrees, PC players will always have an advantage with mouse and keyboard, higher frames, better graphics and resolution, less input lag... High FoV barely makes a difference compared to all of these other advantages, not to mention xbox players can opt out of crossplay.
Just to pop a note in here....
The FOV modification for Steam players was never intentional and has been removed in order to restore the intended settings of Sea of Thieves.
There are no intentions to change this in future.
The only way to increase FoV beyond 90 requires either tampering with files or using 3rd party software.... both of which violate ToS.

Question is, what is Rare going to do about it?
Because there are lots of sreamers and Youtubers who don't even bother hiding this. If they do it publically, I don't want to imagine how many are using it privately.
@greengrimz I don't think Rare can do anything unless they show their name in the video, unfortunately ):

I have an extra wide monitor. I get a wider field of view because of that. FOV seems to affect the HEIGHT of your viewport - and WIDTH adapts to the screen based on that.
Are you sure that this is not what is going on?
This guy left it visible in his screen capture but yes we are sure. FOV 130 and "by exceptis" in green on the corners of screen are dead giveaway. Also notice the terrible fisheye effect near the borders of the screen. Players are using 3rd party software now, from a free cheat community (not gonna advertise but a hint for the Devs it's easy to find)

Console players in here telling PC players 90 is enough. As they play on their xbox on a 70” TV sitting 25 feet away on a couch.
People will always find what to complain about! :)
No, it's the devs saying that 90 is the FOV we want for our game, either like it or bleedin lump it. This isn't a console vs PC issue, 70" TV across the room is no different to 24" monitor 2 feet away from your nose, worse if anything in fact.. Only PC gamers playing 4:3 on old monitors could have a complaint with current FOV and that's on them..

PC player since 1998 here saying 90 is enough. As I play on my ROG 3090 OC edition on a 27" 1440p 144Hz monitor and about 2ft away.
But go on, tell us more how much you know about people you have never conversed with...
In the end, it is Rare's game and Rare have said 90 will be the max. Time to return to COD Modern Warfare #27 for you I guess?

So it is a console vs PC issue, please explain why because I play on PC with 27" @1440 120hz with no problems. I also play on the series X with a 55" TV across the room with no problems, same experience. It is also not misinformation that rare refuse to cave in on the issue no matter how much people cry.

It's not a console vs PC issue. I just used those as examples because most PC players use a monitor and most console players use a TV. If a PC player uses a TV to play and a console user uses a monitor the roles are reversed. Like i said, just educate yourself, the information is available on wikipedia and there are many demonstrations on youtube.
Why do you feel the need to be opinionated about this, fighting with people about it and insulting them by telling them they're crying when you don't even know the basics about how FoV works? I dont know about you but I'd be extremely embarrassed if I was acting like this.

Youre right, you don't. My original point was that there is no difference.. don't know what you actually read into. No misinformation there. Somebody using an old 4:3 TV or monitor will not get the best SoT experience. Anybody using 16:9 will experience it as intended. 90+FOV is for tryhards.

To be fair, 16:9 is perfect for 90 FOV. SOME (none if they were smart) use ultrawide monitors to play games on at 21:9 or even 32:9 ratios. These do experience a bit of odd picture at 90 FOV and to get a similar image need 120 FOV. However for a level playing field, it needs to stay where it is.
120+ FOV forced onto 16:9 creates a fisheye distortion just like in the previous video I posted. These players don't get motion sickness (what it does to the picture would make that condition worse) and they don't have ultrawide monitors. They simply want any advantage they can get over others because when everything is equal, they are subpar players.
I was going to say 16:9+. A lot of games do not support these resolutions, you are correct it needs to stay. A guy in the office has chosen to use an ultrawide and it's great for work although I would still rather use 2 monitors.. I just hate that fisheye.. Why would you do it to yourself if it was not for the reason you surmised?

Yeah nearly all the popular games are 16:9. The ultra and superultra wides are mainly for productivity/graphic design/art industries and avoiding 2-3 monitors and the bezel in between the screens. "Gaming" ultra/superultra monitors are a gimmick just like "surround sound" headsets.
Personally I think it should come down to the human eye's focal range. This is 60 degrees horizontal, not 90. We can see beyond this (peripheral) but it blurs slightly the further from the focal area you get. My suggestion every time is yes, let them have larger FOV but just like in real life, gradient the blur beyond 90 and cap at 120.
This of course would take a good bit of work to make look right and I think it is better to drive new content then visit something that affects so few people such as this.
