Yes there are those who will cry out but it's a pirate game, get over it! wheres your sense of sportsmanship?...etc. Games are meant to be fun, and enjoyable right. Well.. wheres the fun in this... grinding your butt off for over 300hrs, trying to make legend, spending hours on a single quest, unable to explore islands or caverns and caves for the fear of having your sloop trashed or just set adrift for some sick idiots idea of fun, loosing hours worth of loot that would have enabled progression and above all loosing the precious emissary status...No wonder it takes months to achieve legendary status, because those players who have reached end game dont give a hoot about noob's trying to get to the same level as they are. So, my friend and I embarked on the community day event in the hopes of getting somewhat closer to our goals, spending hours grinding only to loose it all to a violent attack by a galleon crew no less. I mean seriously, what chance does a sloop noob crew have against an experienced galleon crew. This is a awesome game its so sad that there are an element of toxic players who enjoy making it totally unplayable for those of us who are new. I wonder how many of the 5 million steam players refunded this game because of this very fact. This situation has occurred with me more times than i can recount, and I ask myself, is it even worth continuing anymore.? But.. even among the trashy toxic players there are those who do make it somewhat worth it, and dont run when they see you as a noob ship, and those players are what makes it worth coming back to time and again. sadly i dont know how long we will keep on doing so. If you are a legend. you have worked for it, you deserve it, you have all the accolades you want. Be mindful and respectful of those of us who are new and trying to reach the same as you. Giving us the opportunity to advance without the constant thought of being set back days because of your sick humor.
Is this game even worth playing anymore?
spending hours on a single quest
How are you spending hours on a single quest ??
unable to explore islands or caverns and caves for the fear of having your sloop trashed or just set adrift for some sick idiots idea of fun
why the namecalling, its part of the game, in fact:
Be a good sport. Sea of Thieves is a pirate game, and stealth, stealing and battles are all part of the fun. All pirates on the seas accept that, but be a good sportsman in both victory and loss.

we all started as noobs at one point, we learned from out mistakes and learned the ways of the game. for instance how easy a sloop can outrun a galleon against the wind
No wonder it takes months to achieve legendary status
months ???? back in the day (year one) yeas it took months of grinding, nowadays loot is aplenty, emmisaries boost the rep you gain and the gold.
in fact people are getting PL within 24 hours nowadays, that would be inconceivable back thenIf you are a legend. you have worked for it, you deserve it, you have all the accolades you want. Be mindful and respectful of those of us who are new and trying to reach the same as you. Giving us the opportunity to advance without the constant thought of being set back days because of your sick humor.
Pirate legend means nothing, it just gives you access to some more quests, and more grinding to level it up to get those sweet sweet cosmetics and soon even more voyages
the seas can be though and it for sure is sink or swim, maybe look up some guides on youtube, Phuzzybond is someone i can advise
@captjack8183 endgame? What endgame? There is no such thing like an endgame in SoT...
I suggest you to get a crew...it's so much more fun to play in a crewAnd what are you talking about to be "set back" with progression? Treasure isn't yours until sold...if you don't sell frequently and keep on hoarding loot it's just a matter of time until you get robbed/sunk...I'd call that your own fault
@captjack8183 matey, it isn't toxic to sink your ship; end of conversation on that one.
There are ways that it becomes toxic:- use of slurs and derogatory language
- spawn camping for no reason other than to keep killing you
- repairing the ship and repeatedly hitting it
Just sinking your ship is not a toxic act in and of itself I am afraid. That other crew doesn't know you, or your experience and as such, are simply taking a risk out of their equation for their sail. I would definitely suggest the Discord LFG section, as some older Pirates might well be able to give you and your friend some helpful experiences such as keeping a weather eye.
@sshteeve agreed, sinking and looting is not toxic, its how its done that is. so heres the thing, sloop is anchored, and unable to evade, crew is killed and immediately on respawn killed again while the attacking crew is having a blast insulting you over voice for your inexperience and apparent inability to respond in a speedy and timeous manner to their attack. If thats not toxic then you need to review the definition as well as the element of trash that exist within this game.

You never mention that in your OP, which would be helpful. Then I hope you recorded it, sent it to Rare and let them deal with it matey: https://support.seaofthieves.com/hc/en-gb/requests/new
Also - not my definition to review as I don't work for Rare.
I do think the @deckhands might want to take a look though as I don't know if this post actually offers any legitimate discussion and is more of an "I got sunk" thread. Definitely submit that report though with some evidence matey, or make sure you get some in the future as Rare DO act on it.
@sshteeve thanks shipmates, we have had many a great adventure, and played with other crews as well, it was all fun and light hearted. We learn as we go along and will do as suggested in future.
@callmebackdraft perhaps we doing it wrong but heres how we spend hours on a mission. got a mission from the order of souls, she throws out 6 to 8 island locations varying from 1 to 3 capts. Travel to the island, very seldom have we arrived with a captain already spawned. battle a few waves of skellies and he pops up. first one down aprox 20 min or so, then onto all the others... we spent over 2 hrs last night doing just that. a chance encounter with the kraken which we managed to evade only because another sloop came to our aid, thus saving the loot and emissary status. i guess we have learnt to sell as we go along, it will be more tedious and time consuming but... will save a lot of frustration in the end.
A quick lesson i would like to impart on you about those regular voyages (like the OOS captain maps) you dont need to do the mstart to finish, apart from a commendation there is no real lore tied to doing so and has no real value, why sail all across the map against the wind to go kill one captain ? (example) it is not an effort really worth spending your time on because ofthe reward. Same goes for regular X marks the spot maps why sail all across the map to go dig up a single or 2 x's. in those cases you are WAY better off just cancelling the voyage and voting down another one
recently it seems like more and more people are unaware of the different skelly types and their strengths and weaknesses, so here is a quick pointer on that:
- Gold/Metal skeletons are strong against melee weapons, weak vs ranged and can be made even weaker when in water or splashed with water from bucket/rain (i have literally seen players unironically slashing at a gold skelly for minutes)
- Plant Skeletons are strong vs Ranged weaponry and heal when in contact with water, they are weak to melee weaponry
- Shadow skeletons go invulnerable at night time and at that time you need to every now and then hold up your lantern to make them vulnerable. they are fast and hove no specific strengths or weaknesses
- Regular skeletons/bandana skeletons are just normal no special strengths or weaknesses
- All skeleton types are weak to fire, firebombs can make quick work of big waves of skellies
- I find blunderbombs to be useless against skellies unless they are holding a keg
@captjack8183
Hello Captain Jack ,Full respect for thy notorious name . No, i'm going to be serious and i won't undermine your post because what you deescribe does , sadly , happen but NOT by every experienced or Legendary pirate .
We , my crew and me , have been sailing for years , try to make an Alliance with every ship we come across , some join ,some don't ,some shoot . Those that shoot are told that we come in peace but if the cannonballios keep flying over our heads and in our hull ,then we fire back . Firing back in order to sink , we didn't start the fire , remember...We also help everyone who asks for help, New or already Experienced Pirate . As an ,older , gamer i feel i have the responsibility to not only entertain our crew but also to fight and communicate with other crews in a piratey ,roleplay or cosplayer manner that is still enjoyed by the other crews or " enemies"... When the session is done , you have only played a game and only killed some time that you could have spend doing other things . Sportmanship is something i have been talking years about ,because , is a spawnkill by waiting till somebody's shadow appear and shoot off a blunderbuss before someone can move ,that courageous? In my eyes not , i would even call it yellow but that's me , i hate being attacked without a chance of defence and some old Saint told once :" Don't do to others what you don't like for your own or something"...
Now you can blame this game or it's Dear Developers for making a game without much rules but just because of that people are who they are or would want to be . That half of them are ruthless killers that use " questionable" actions like spawnkilling or hunting the same ship untill it is forced off the server means that you gain the knowledge to never put that person on your Friendslist or call them thy Friend...
Sure, this may read as a very small comforting but i give this game an absolutely big value as this game , unaware for many of it's players , make that their true personality starts floating above. Who is angry quick ? Who is bigmouthing quick ? Who is stressed quick ? Who can't take control during choatic fights ? Who get's fed up and ragequits quickle? And so on, you learn this by playing this game . You learn who to embrace and who to leave behind ...
That being said , i only want to underline not to generalize all experienced players , there are still Pirates that DO help , protect ,escort, help with Tall Tales without betraying the story or clue of the riddle , and keep loyal to Alliance or only fight when fought upon and their number ? Well, sadly , i can't put a sticker with a number upon on that question but i do know that if they would sit around my table then they would have eaten the ears off my head after eating the provisions in my cupboard . We are not with Millions but i'm sure that the ones who do grant the sunlight in other Pirates' eyes are still ranging in thousends...
i cannot ask nor force you to keep playing this game but i would try to press on your heart to let what i wrote sink in yer brain and give it another try , who knows that you may come across a few Pirates who still carry Sportmanship , helping New Pirates ( and not noobs because that's an insult !) and simply granting others' their Tall Tales , keep very high in their moral flag...
All that is left to say from me to you is : Happy Sailing , Fair Winds and don't become discouraged from a loss or meeting a cullpritt . Tomorrow is another chance to sail and to experience a whole different Tale as the ones you described above.
Something that I've used over the years to help myself create less negative experiences and more positive ones is to put my energy into goals and appreciation and try to limit putting it into things that are negative or standing in the way.
I've seen the negative happenings that people discuss.
Plenty of unpleasant things happen.
Giving that stuff energy allows it to grow and take over.I look at every negative occurrence on the seas as a wave that takes me to the next occurrence that is fortunate or enjoyable.
Imo the most productive way to combat true toxicity is to always dedicate to leading by example. Focusing on what others do or how they talk, calling them out publicly, trying to run them out, these are mostly just social games that lead to more toxicity, even though they may try to claim victory, that negativity is still being spread around. This isn't what changes people in the end. People change when they want to change and very few change their minds or actions when engaging in social team sport verbal combat.
If someone treats you in a way that you do not enjoy you can use that energy to be kind to someone else, do something nice for a random person, show mercy that you weren't shown.
Within that you are building yourself up as well.Negativity will always exist somewhere and so does the opportunity to appreciate something or someone and move forward. It's a choice every day. The game can really shine or become bleak depending on which of these you choose.
@captjack8183 I solo most of the time. I sell after every Island haul. Hording is a good way to lose it all. I do Order of the Soles in the Roar. the geysers help knock the skeletons out quickly. Especially the metal ones. The bonus is there is usually no one out hunting for you there (usually). Once you get used to the environment out there, you may come to like it. I have found lately that most crews stick to themselves, and every now and then I get attacked. Something that I can deal with.
Why is no one talking about cheaters here? There are really a lot of them, especially in the arena! They just shoot with every shot they hit. I have played more than 2500 hours, but in the arena I just burn from this disgrace. They shoot through walls, they hit through masts. This is too much. And now, with the closing of the arena, they will all go to the common seas and shoot there, but where are the developers? Why is it profitable for them not to ban cheaters? Only now it’s inappropriate to say that I don’t know how to play, I can! Toxic community, toxic players, toxic rars.
@captjack8183 It's part of learning the game. The biggest issue with new players is nobody wants to learn the game. I would bet you've put zero time into learning sloop combat. I'd rather solo sloop than play on a brig or galleon. The best thing I heard in this game was: "The loot isn't yours until you turn it in."
Most of what you said comes down to inexperience. If you aren't willing to put time into the game to get better I'd just suggest playing something else. This is a common thing I see with new players. Instead of figuring out how to get better you just demand the skill ceiling gets lowered.
Don't complain about toxic players. That's just straight up whining. You can turn off proximity chat. If they spawn camp you can scuttle. You can switch servers. There are only 5 ships per server dude. Yesterday I did a fort of fortune and didn't see a single ship while completing the fort and turning it in solo.
Tips
- Play arena as much as you can before they remove it next month. It will change the way you play
- When you start a game check the map. If there is a level 5 reaper just switch servers
We all get the pain you feel starting this game. It takes awhile to get better and understand it, but it's very rewarding once you get better.
@idiablo-tv I have never once ran into a cheater in this game. In fact I never see people complain about it either. Based on the majority of your comment being nonsense I would bet you don't have 2500 hours in.
Dear pirate, unfortunately the seas are difficult, and there are many pirates who enjoy sinking others, but believe me, lately I have found more bad fledgling pirates than legendary ... as if this game were only for pvp .. the advice I can give you, in addition to those already given by others, is to look at the map and stay away from the reaper and red flags, always look around with the telescope, and flee into the wind if you see someone in the distance, well .. not forever, sooner or later I should learn to defend you.
Look for the videos on youtube, there are many legends and streamers who teach you to play, always carry 3 fire bombs and 2 bowler hats with you, you learn how to use them.
You will see that however, with the time that you will begin to hate and sink everyone you meet: D .. and this is a consequence of what you will suffer as a beginner.@idiablo-tv said in Is this game even worth playing anymore?:

They actively ban cheaters if you think you encountered someone using these external advantages report them to rare here on the site with a support ticket. the thing is stuff you are reporting as cheats are actually impossible. what you are more likely experiencing are hitregistration/backtracking issue which has been a known issue for quite a while.
The server registers the hit and thus if it registers that the player hit a wall/mast etc damage will not be dealt to you because the server will not send the damage dealt to your client. and it is impossible to cheat server side because you would need to get access to those physical machines and install software there.
It used to be possible to hit trough these objects but that has been patched out quite some time ago. the thing is, alot of the people that still played arena over the time of its existence where the diehard TDM crew and they just grinded out alot of experience in handling themselves with direct pvp combat.
this doesnt mean that cheaters dont exist, its an online game thus it has cheaters if you suspect someone; record them, report them and rare will look into it and deal with it appropriatly
It is paradox - The problem you describe is only made worse by your suggestions.
I think this discussion sums up quite well the core problem SoT/ Rare is facing. It is a grind to get good in the game. And everyone who achieved this point of his/her pirate career suffered a lot on the path, got killed a 1000 times and probably watched a lot of tutorials/ streams to get gud. So you are proud and you enjoyed it all. But than you are starting to realize that there is no endgame content worth playing.
The only way to go: PvP - That is, where the problem start: Those people want to stick with SoT, because they enjoyed it so much. And what they end up doing is killing every ship on the server, sometimes as toxic as you described. So this imbalance occured, a mixture of beginners/ intermediate and very advanced PvP-focused pirates. Of course this is a pain in the a** for new players. Additionally, the gap between these two experience-levels has grown considerably. And at this point, I would agree with you, that somethings need to change.
But here is the sad part: SoT itself has contributed to this development (without noticing?) by adding more and more PvE-related content. They listened to the majority of people like you, who are complaining about the very expirienced players. And therefore they ended up adding story driven voyages and seperate servers. This enhances the struggle of expirienced players to get into PvP-action. The worst part is, the motivation to raise an emissary for new players shrinks due to the non fraction-correlated content. Expirienced players are bored and trying to get every last toxic sip out of that one PvP-battle every four hours. So the initial problem gets even bigger!
If you would be outrageous, it feels like Rare tried to get rid of the PvP pirates, because they do not invest real money in the game anymore and additionally scare away new players, who would have invested the money. This matches with the fact that they (are going to) get rid of Arena. This game mode could have been an endgame-strategy, but they never really committed themselves to it.
So what could help? I think, a content update dedicated to the endgame is more important than ever. A real new PvP-mechanic would reduce your suffering (it will always be hard to master SoT) and brings back a new balance. I like the idea of a PvP-event or an area on the map (which changes with every season) dedicated to PvP-action and related commendations. Maybe that could get a place where new players could decide to go, in order to fight other players to get better. Maybe a new currency could be cool to, which you earn by achiving sinks or simply just for fighting other pirates.
PS: A solid + fun way to get to know the basics of the game would help aswell. Maybe a flag showing that you are doing the voyage-series for beginners could help indicate your expirience for the first 12 ingame hours or so. Something similar to the signs on a Driving school car (at least in Germany).
Sure it is, if you enjoy it! I understand the folks who say "no" though. It can be frustrating after a long day at work you come home, sit down, and want to enjoy yourself on the sea. You're trying to get your reputation up, run a couple missions and you either get sunk by the Kraken(Karen) or a "toxic" crew. But I've made some friends from some of the crews that have sunk me, or stopped by asking for help. I play it because I enjoy the ability to rank up, partake in the big events, and I LOVE the lore and story of the game. I try to remember Ramsey's vision for what he wanted to bring and my crew and I try to live up to his standard. I hope you stick with it, and continue to sail with us out on the sea.
