An incentive to Bury high level Treasure.

  • I found the Burying feature to be a little underwhelming—in its current state, I think it's best utilized by smaller and less experienced crews who want to covet their valuables until it's time to turn in.

For crews that are less concerned with the risk, the treasure stays onboard and unburied.

I think a great way to remedy this is to incentivize Grade V Emissaries to bury their respective high level loot: Chest of Legends, Chest of Ancient Tributes, Ashen Winds, Breath of the Sea.

When these items are buried, and later retrieved by another crew, the value of the Treasure increases. The catch is that the value of the Treasure is only ever increased if the burying crew is of Grade V. A chain of increases is totally possible if crews want to rebury a piece of loot once they are also at Grade V. This encourages crews to get to Grade V if they happen upon one of these Treasures.

Anyone can hand in the Treasure, and when it's finally handed in, every crew who contributed to increasing its value, as well as the crew handing in, gets an equal and abundant payout. The longer the chain, the higher the individual crew payout.

The only Emissary incapable of partaking in the above system is the Reapers Bones. Instead, a Grade V Reaper can elect to have vision of any unburied Treasures that have been 'appreciated'. If the Reaper is sunk, they lose this ability, but their option to partake in increasing the value is permanently lost as long as they remain on the server. They must hand the Treasure into the Reapers Hideout, and only they will receive the individual crew payout.

This is essentially a rewording and better explanation of something I wrote a few days ago.

Really interested to hear what people have to say about it.

  • This sounds like a really good way to make Alliance servers even more effective.

  • @d3adst1ck

Definitely is, at least for the first 5 buries, but to go higher than that they will have to eventually allow someone else to add to the chain.

I don't think there is any mechanic in this game that is truly balanced for Alliance Servers anyway, so I don't see why this should be any different.

The problem is there is very little benefit to doing this if you aren't in an alliance server. The payout you get for someone else turning in this loot would have to match or be greater than the value of you doing it yourself at Grade 5 to be worthwhile.

Burying treasure can't be worth more than doing it yourself in any way without being broken, and no one who cares about payouts is going to bury treasure, forgoing a much more lucrative payout, and hope that someone does the map for a smaller one.

  • That is right,

The idea is that it's worth it for you to take a risk and bury it. I never stated how much the payout should be, but it should be worth more than your 2.5x emissary multiplier.

You don't forgo a more lucrative payout, you take a risk for burying it and if you made the right choice then sweet, you get a higher payout.

You could also bury it and sail around for a bit to find a crew that you think is capable of getting to grade V and give your map to them.

Do you currently use the Bury mechanic?

  • @touchiertooth28 No, and this wouldn't get me to do it either because there is less chance that someone is going to see the map and do it on the chance that it isn't filled with junk than there is for me to just sail to the outpost and sell the item myself - which I already need to do to deliver the map to the quest board.

  • Yeah,

Like I said, you can always give the map to someone, even if they aren't grade V, by them digging it up and handing it in you both get increased value.

The whole idea is to make the Bury mechanic somewhat useful and to encourage crews to engage with each other in some way other than combat.
