Help with Low FPS

  • Hey y'all I'm looking for someone who knows more about PC's and gaming than I do to help. I'm experiencing a lot of frame skipping while running the game. I log into the game and it skips terribly often struggling to get above 10 FPS. I've disable V-sync, deleted temporary files, tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and played with graphics settings but even turning everything to cursed doesn't make it playable. The game ran fine the last time I played it in November and every other game runs perfectly fine including COD Warzone which I would expect to be more demanding which makes me think it's not an issue with the hardware.

My machine is close to brand new and as high end as I was able to afford: Intel i7-10700F, 16GB, 1TB SSD (950GB free), Windows 11, RTX 3060. I'm running ethernet cable with internet consistently running at around 450Mbps with a ping of 6 ms when I test it but when I open the game the ping jumps to around 80ms. Any help is welcome because at this point I'm at a loss. Thanks

  • Ping of 80ms is very normal for SoT.

Your FPS however is not normal. Check your drivers and check to make sure your external gpu is being properly utilized and not the "on-board" graphics. Also check to make sure you are running full screen mode.

  • Have you maybe installed Citrix?

Your specs should certainly get more than 10 FPS. The first thing I recommend is going into your Windows settings and turning off Game Mode. You can search for it in the start menu. Something broke between a recent Windows Update and Sea of Thieves version combination that results in really bad FPS drops. This fixed that particular problem for me.

On another note, an RTX 3060 is a decent card, but I don't imagine you will be able to play on max graphics settings with it. Over the past year, some of the tweaks to the game REALLY ate into graphics performance. It's a lot more demanding than it used to be. You should certainly be able to play on more than cursed at 1080p with any 3000 series card though.

As for your ping, that's really not bad. When you can ping google, for example, at 6ms... that's good, but that's not representative of real-world performance. When I play on the servers I'm closest to, I get 65-85ms. Totally normal and playable. When I play a few time zones away, it's around 200ms.
The reason for the difference between your in-game and out-of-game pings being so different is most likely because of the payload size and type. When you ping in a console window, you're sending only 32 bytes of data to a service who's only job is to respond as soon as possible. The game is likely sending a lot more data and the server takes a little longer to process it and respond.

  • @burnttoast1313 I’m wondering if Windows 11 has something to do with it, as I have heard some mixed reviews, but assuming that’s not the case, as a last resort you can reset Windows and try that. It’s pretty quick and easy, although it’s kind of a pain since you have to re-download a lot of the game launchers. I had an issue a few months ago where I was getting 1 FPS every time I loaded in. Insider was fine, as was every other game. I re-installed the game, tried it on different drives, and nothing would fix it. I never had a problem before. I reset windows and that fixed it. It’s sort of the “nuke” approach.

  • @dextermorning OH MY GOD I love you. I did install citrix for school, I uninstalled it and it works amazing now. I would've never thought of this thank you so much!

I have a GTX 1660 OC and I can run the game at max settings for a consistent 50fps at 1440p. It's not completely on topic but if you have any GPU that's better than mine and your hardware isn't throttling its performance, you can definitely run this game at the highest settings without a problem :)

  • @dextermorning can you give me your discord and help?
