Is there any way to get good at this game?

  • My son and I have been playing the game for about a month. We are not big fans of PvP, but we really like the PvE in the game. We figured dealing with other players would just be a hazard we'd get better at dealing with over time. But here we are a month later and we still stink at PvP. It's like we haven't gotten any better at all. We've done the research on how to get better. We've watched multiple videos on how to fight more effectively. We've watched videos of fight examples to learn things. We know the general knowledge and tips for how to fight in the best manner. Game-mechanics-wise we know what we are doing. We've played a bunch of arena games. We've played adventure games where we go straight at other players. At this point we are thinking of giving up. It's no fun to get beat up over and over again and have our loot stolen over and over again. Whenever we fight other players we killed so quick that we can't even learn anything or get any experience. We have practiced and done well against skeletons and skeleton ships, but skills learned there don't translate to PvP.

Are we missing something? Because at this point I think we are done. Which is too bad because the game is so much fun. Anyone got any suggestions (other than standard advice)? We've heard and listened to the standard advice. It's not working.

Maybe the game should have some sort of way to practice built in? Arena isn't cutting it. We die so fast in arena that we don't get any practice.

The way it's looking now, other players have been playing so long at this point that we can't compete and they beat us so fast we can't learn and get better. We are at a loss on how we are supposed to enjoy this game.

In every video game out there. These words to an extent have been said so many times. It not just SoT.
Some games you learn quick, some you dont. Not everything is easy or simple.

And as some might also point out, HitReg is also at fault.

Maybe the game should have some sort of way to practice built in? Arena isn't cutting it. We die so fast in arena that we don't get any practice.

Then you be wrong. Somewhat. Practice means to fail. How many times is up to you.

We are at a loss on how we are supposed to enjoy this game.

I thought the same way when I used to play Minecraft, and having players or simply Mobs (Creepers) destroy my farm, house or stuff. But..I always came back to play it again simple for the fact: I liked the game and enjoyed it none the less.

  • Yea sometimes you just run into crews who will always beat you but all pvp games are that way if your on a very aggressive server switch if you want to fight then go straight at them use bluderbombs and just try and try better the next time and if you can’t out fight a crew out smart them also when in ship to ship combat use rocks and islands to your advantage

  • You should just make sure you are all full with cooked meat the extra health bar is really a big help. You can also see if you can get on the same server with two different ships that way you can practice your PvP skills on each other without stress. You can do this by either setting sail in two separate sloop at the exact same time or asking another crew for their boat if there about to sign off. PC players still have a response advantage so stick with Xbox players only in the settings. Hopefully this helps you two.

Well, if you're hitting a skill wall, you might want to shift your perspective a bit.

In my opinion, getting "good" at SoT is just as much (if not more) mental as it is skill based. I've played since before launch and have killed two players in my long career. (And one of those was because they asked me to)

I don't attack other ships, not even to defend myself. If I see an opportunity, I might hit a pursuer with and anchor or mast ball to facilitate my escape. But I've never tried to kill another pirate or sink a player ship.

Now this means that I do often end up dead and stripped of my loot. But I've just made it part of the game. If someone starts chasing me and I don't think I can get away, I try and do something fun. Whether it be hitting an anchor-turn to board their ship and hopping about as long as I can before they kill me, or hiding out below decks with a mega-keg until someone boards and then blowing us both sky high the second they see me.

Basically it's training yourself to stop seeing death and stolen loot as a failure and rather as just another potential source of amusement. Whenever someone tells me they're having trouble playing PvE in the game I always recommend that they practice losing. Sail out with no plans to profit or advance. Just play around with whatever you come across. See a reaper on the map? Sail over and say hello. Play them a tune, sing them a song if you have a mic, fill your boat with caged chickens and meet them on deck doing a jig.

It can be a tough time and it's not for everyone, but I find it a fantastic way for those who aren't into PvP to enjoy SoT to it's fullest.

There is no way to 'git gud' in a month. Take your lumps and watch what others do in combat or commit to being pve focused and get really good at sailing and the murder hobos won't be able to catch you.

And it makes them sooooo mad lol.

It takes time and some people have been playing for years at this point.

  • You both with be alright. It just takes time. Stick with it for a while. I'm confident you have what it takes. It'll click eventually.

Since you've been having a tough time let me know if you and your boy want some treasure and I'll get you a haul. Just let me know what time you want it and what faction between gold/merchant/order you prefer.

I dunno if your son is young or not but if he is young and you want the treasure I'll hand the keys over to you and you can bring him on the ship after I leave so you can surprise him.

  • Have you tried going Discord and looking for an alliance server. They are servers with almost no PvP and every one makes ridiculous money. I'm sure they would welcome a father and son team.

  • Good idea person above me (I'd link your name but apparently it's a profanity), but there is a simpler way (less searching). They just need to find a semi competent player to teach them and to play in a Brigantine.

The Brigantine is much more fun than a sloop, as it's quick and packs a punch, plus most players avoid it as it's the preffered ship for hard-core PvPers.

  • It’s only been a month, takes a lot longer than that to get good at a multiplayer game. You’ll get better w time, you’re facing ppl who’ve been playing the game since day one

  • Have a dedicated "PvP Day" with your son; take no treasure (so nothing to lose or stress about losing) and actively chase/engage others. It is the only way to get better at it.
I am closing in on my first year (400+ hours of play later) of the game and I still consider myself average when it comes to PvP.

It is not my main thing but, it is something I have gotten better at as I went along. You will die, you will lose stuff, you can ALWAYS get more stuff :)

  • @dadguy005 did you watch videos from PhuzzyBond? If not, look his channel, he got really good advices...
Anyway...if you got unlucky and always lose...try first to RUN and BOARD...sail against the wind, use this video to learn:
    https://youtu.be/XaHT0ZLeMdU
Always remember, sloop is the fastest against the wind and with the expansion of the "sailable world" since season 3, this works pretty good...most times they give up...
You will learn over time, when it's time to fight or time to run...
Hiding is also some kind of PvP... if you go onto a big island, stay behind the sight of other ships, just watch the horizon as often as you can and you will have no problems in avoiding other crews...

  • First of all don't beat yourselves up over this because right now the game is in a terrible place when it comes to pvp and only getting worse with each new update.

If your struggling with player to player fighting than do your best to keep it a navel battle until you have the ship severely disabled with the crew focused on bailing rather than watching their ladders. Before you grab the ladder try and hit them with a weary ball which can help you avoid someone ladder guarding you. Also watch your ladders and keep blunder bombs on you.

Learn the double gun switch and block sword swipe.

Lastly don't focus on the sinks and loss be happy spending time with your son. I play with my nephew pretty much every day and it's the best part of my day honestly.

  • The only way to get good in Sot is by getting sunk a lot of times to see your own mistakes.

Sometimes a crew or even a skilled single sailor will destroy you just because they are really good playing PvP (I faced today a brig with 1 guy with 5900 hours and he literally destroyed me even with his crew on the ferry)

It takes a ton of hours to improve, the skill wall you face when you are beginner is horrible but there is not another way, if you want to survive you have to fight and learn, even If that makes you loose all your effort and loot comming from hours of grinding, escaping may be a option, but is not the way to learn.

Try to engage combat with other players and correct mistakes, you will improve with the time.

Or, you can join alliance servers and just have a funny time with your son doing pve without getting disturbed by other people, you can choose.

  • @dadguy005

The way to get better at this game is simply...Keep playing . The PvP section is harder to train , you can play many Order of Soul missions , chop of skeleton heads like a Japanese cook but still go down to the human Pirate .
You have to take in account that some Pirates have an experience of three and a half years , some even more as they were Alpha or Beta players ...
But ... the shipfights , those are perfect trainable : Go after a skeletonfleet , after you have stacked up quite some resources , go after Capitano FlameHeart or start a Ghost ship mission from the Order of Souls... Yes , AI reacts slower as humans but ,like in a Skeletonfleet fight , those skellies can be overpowering sometimes when they suddenly work together ...

Always count the incoming hits , go no higher than three , then repair your ship... Keep your boy or yourself on the canon but the other one must repair , shout if bailing is needed because your ship is your home... i remember how Fleets brought the heebeejeebees to me ,out of fear to get sunk but having adapted , they don't are that great of risk and ... you learn to estimate the trajectory of the canon towards ship parts ... When encountering humans , then try to take their mast down with chainballs , maybe not easy , but also not that difficult , use Cursed Balls , firebombs and always keep one or two blunderbombs in thy pocket , they work good against boarders... Try to hit the ship under the watermine because exactly there does it hurt as water immediatly poors in...

The last thing i would like to press upon your Heart is : Don't give up, keep playing and certainly with your son , because when you both start to grow and act and react as an oiled machine , your son will ,always ,think back to these moments as the best times of his Childhood when he played with his dad...
And believe me , a good Childhood is a very great asset for his later life ...

Don't get angry or frustrated from a loss, but instead learn from it , see where it went wrong and try to adapt...i've been one of those lucky illegal sons that was allowed to play from the first Alpha and i'm still worthless in PvP, but in shipfights , you better watch out ... i , and the Crew i'm allowed in, have never blamed one an other of a sunk , we took it on the chin and saw where we could have acted better , the next ship we just tried again ...Always keep in mind that winners are losers that never gave up...

Happy sailings , and holidays , Sir.

  • @jolaton It was purely in good banter......

My comment was reeking of sarcasm and no one else even thought it was malicious

  • Now first something about the game in general. SoT is one of the few games that can really make you feel things... hard. The constant threat of loosing everything, loot, supplies and ship will make the loot (and the ship) so much more valuable. If you loose a lot of loot it can really sting, likewise winning/escaping and turning in a huge hoard of loot can feel extremely good. There is a saying in SoT, that goes something like "Half of the value of your loot is the risk of loosing it". Not many games can affect your feelings like SoT nowadays... and i think this is one of the reasons many of us play it.

I am an older player (40+) and my reactions are not as good as they used to be, and my crew is about the same age, so we are naturally not super good at PvP. However we are very very organized, and have specialized in ship to ship combat. We can usually sink the other ship, and then pick off the players in the sea after the battle. We also have some general rules when we play. One example is, we never curse or use verbal assaults on other players (if we need to went, we do that on discord among our friends, but never in game to others), another one is that one player ALWAYS stay on the ship if we have missions that require off ship activity. This lookout also makes sure the sails and anchor are up, and the cannons aimed at possible incoming threats. We also have dedicated roles on the ship, i for example usually stay by the wheel, and try to keep an eye on the ships surroundings (on a galleon you have excellent view high up on the deck (at the wheel). Others handle cannons, and some are dedicated bucketeers/repairmen. I believe this is common practice among many other crews.
It takes a lot of practice for a crew to get good at communicating, and for the crew to learn what commands are important, when everyone abandons everything they are doing and all start bucketing and similar things. In time many of the tasks during extreme battle are automatic, and everyone knows what to do and in what order.

Im writing a book here, but what im trying to say is, get together a proper crew, and train with that crew and suddenly you realize that you are not worried anymore, you start trusting in yourselves and everything becomes more fun. Also you dont need to be good at PvP, you can specialize in other things to protect yourselves.

Also dont be afraid of expanding your crew with some new friends. We are a bunch of old Finns, and one day we needed a new guy to fill out our crew, and we found a young guy from England on DISCORD. We now have to use a different language, and had to adjust our playing time a little, but he is now a big part of our crew. So maybe this could be something you could do, perhaps get someone good at PvP to teach you, or to be your new boarder? Dont be afraid to try out new players in your crew. Not everyone will fit your style and personality, but when you find him/her, you will know it. So give it a try, you might find a new long time online friend to play other games with as well.

I know i didnt give many actual tips here. This post is more like some general ideas based on my own experience on the seas. I hope you can get at least something out of this post. Also there are some really good advice by other long time players in this post.
