Is it really necessary to completely reinstall another 60gb just to use the insider version or is there something I'm missing?
Insider Download
@itsicee01 Insider build is a completely separate build and requires a full install. Any progress/unlocks etc from one do not carry over to the other.
If you wish to be part of the Insider program then you will need to download and install the Insider client.

Open the MS store and search for "Sea of Thieves" or "Sea of Thieves Insider"...both ways it should appear
@freeunkind As posted above, you can follow the link and Download the Insiders build. After you have downloaded it you should be able to just update it when there is a new build.
