Burying Gunpowder Barrels

  • Hi

May I ask what is the point of burying a gunpowder barrel (keg) if you don't get a map to show where it is? Technically it is listed as "treasure".

Also can we bury a keg on top of a piece of treasure and have the option to "prime" it for detonation? Would be worthy of the "trickster" commendation...

  • I'm guessing the decision to not add an X is to prevent widespread trolling with just maps of kegs. Also, it's "treasure" until it's buried. It's not possible to dig it up and disarm it to sell, as its fuse time is so short.

The way it works with Xs, you can still set a trap by burying a keg pretty close to a piece of loot, but the player digging can still get something of value, even if it is low value or even an animal crate - which you could use to catch an animal to sell, at least.

I do think the system needs some work though. Others have suggested a "grade" system of sorts for maps, which I have to agree is the way forward long term. Then you can still bury kegs for a laugh/trap but if the rest of the loot is good enough, players still have faith in the feature because they know the value of the actual loot is good.

  • It's called a trap. There's 2 ways to get someone to dig up your trap.

    1. Bury a powder keg on or close to your other buried loot item. They'll either walk over it or see the disturbed ground, plant their shovel (potentially) in the wrong buried loot, and boom!

    2. Since there is an audio queue it's easy to put a few in a high-traffic area and have someone think they've stepped on some loot, plant their shovel, and boom!

There's high-traffic corridors on Snake Island, Thieves Haven, Plunder Valley, Crooks Hollow, and most islands if you're crafty enough. It's a fun mechanic. You might be able to use it for some strategy, but that's probably less likely. It's mostly for funsies.

Isn't there already a system? I've seen maps with terms like stash, hoard, trove, etc., and I was fairly certain the term used was some sort of indicator for the wealth that was buried.

To add to this: bury several high-value items on a small island to entice players to select your map, but also bury a bunch of bombs all around and amongst your loot. They're bound to find something out there!

Doesn't tell you the value, only the number of items. A hoard is a map with 5 Xs or more, but they could be of any value.

    Got it- thanks for clarifying

  • @magician787 Stop worrying about burying kegs and loot, and concentrate on helping us take down this Galleon. Gosh!

  • What's the count to get trove? 10 is the max per map and that's a hoard.

  • That's what I thought to myself, and instead of asking the forums I figured I'd create traps.
I'd burry them next to my actual loot, at a confusing location (ex : coast, beach) and players would immediately arrive seeing that sneakily covered sand and think that that'd be it.
Well turns out that nope, your treasure's a little further away and here's a keg for you
