What if I dig up someone else's treasure and instead of turning it in (giving them a renown boost), I bury it myself?

  • Does the renown boost keep growing and growing?
Does the original bury-er get the renown boost? (Or do I get the renown boost)

I think I might go try this and see if I get renown or not (if not, I'd assume that only the first "bury-er" would get the renown?)

Let us know what you find out. This mechanic is a lot of fun!

  • Good point!

  • I would hope the renown gets to both parties, but gold Going to who turns what in.

  • I just spent the evening gathering a bunch of treasure from other people's maps and buried most of it on a single island.

I noticed that when I posted my map (with 7 X's on it) it said "horde" and other maps only said "stash". I wonder if that has to do with how much loot is buried on the island?

Anyhow, I'll have to login tomorrow and see if I get any renown and I'll post back here what happens.

  • I donated a map to the board but the achievement didn't pop. It was only one skull. I didn't notice the 'stash' or 'hoarde' name so maybe it does require more items of a certain higher value.

When you dig up a treasure, the owner gains its reputation and renown. Then you bury it and it becomes your treasure. If another player dig it up, you will then gain its reputation and renown. If nobody find your treasures before the server shutdown, you will get a smaller amount of renown for your trouble.

Wow, I was wondering about this, since I can see a good chunk of people not digging up your stuff due to location or simply they dont like your name :/
and it sitting on the board for who knows how long.

So it still a Risk, you either turn in your loot for full payout or place on board and hope someone digs them up.

  • @burnbacon It's somewhat a risk yeah. But if you are sure that you won't be able to sell your loot, it's at least some guaranteed reward. For instance : you're a solo sloop grinding Athena rep and you see a Reaper 5 Brig coming for your butt : quickly bury your most valuable loot. Or you're on an island but you have to disconnect in a few minutes : just bury as much loot as possible. Even if you don't put the map on the quest board, at server shutdown (or when your map despawn) you will still receive something.

  • @grog-minto - I thought as a "bury-er", I only earn reputation and renown when someone digs up my treasure and turns it in?

Hmm, I just watched the content update videos again and it never says that, it only says you'll earn reputation and renown when another pirate finds it (and digs it up).

    Interesting.

Also, I just logged in and my reputation hadn't changed. Does that mean that no one dug up my treasuer and the server is still on? (Because if the server was shut off, I'm supposed to get a little reputation for burying treasure, right? Or maybe the burying reputation only comes when I bury it, not when the server shuts off? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

According to the patch notes, renown is given when the treasure is dug up.

Basically, the previous owner's 'claim' on buried treasure only lasts until someone else finds it, at which point they get their renown and renounce any further claim on it. It's now the finder's treasure, to do with as they wish (including reburying it in the same place).

  • @grog-minto if they catch you and steal the map(s) from your table, i don't know that you get any benefit/renown. So you need to hide the map or still out run them to a quest board.

  • If somebody digs up my treasure will I get commendation progress for that treasure. For example if I bury a rag and bone crate and post it on the quest board and somebody digs it up will my rag and bone crate count for how many I’ve sold go up?

    Don't think so

I did a generous gift test and didn't get anything

Maybe if they fix the flag thing where it turns a dug up flag into your own they can modify that so people can do the gift commendations that way.

  • Do the rewards just go to just the person who buried in/the person who's name is stated on the map/or the whole crew that contributed to creating the map?

I'm a little confused as our little crew has created a load of maps, put them on the board, hung around a server, left, logged on a couple of days later, no notifications, no renown, no reputation, nothing.

It all feels kinda pointless at the moment, though it is kinda fun, but to stop this from dying there needs to be more incentive to do it, be it gold, rep, or something...

There are just 2 commendations for this...posting 25 voyages and post a voyage with lots of treasure on one island...didn't look at the name of it, but I made a map with 10x to be sure

  • @schwammlgott

You only need 5 on one island to be a "hoard".

A little cheese is to remove your 5x map bundle from your table temporarily so you can do a second one on the same island and create a new map. Then just replace the map bundle to "merge" them, you'll still have 2 maps on that island. That's how I've been doing it when I have a lot of treasure.

  • @realstyli oh...nice...but I just need 2 more...so too late for me that info 😉
