Capture the Flag

  • I'm sure this has been suggested before, so apologies if it's redundant. I was thinking that a CTF mode addition to Arena would be amazing. Two teams of 6 players each start with 2 sloops at your fort, maybe Hidden Springs for one team, Kraken Watchtower for the other team. The "flag" is actually an Arena chest, which rests on the pedestal in each teams (open) vault. The game plays like traditional CTF: the goal is to steal and then touch the enemies flag to your (returned/home) flag as many times as possible in the time limit. Your flag can be picked up in the field by the enemy, or returned by you to your home pedestal. Most captures wins. There are so many ways to play this: all out naval assault, full island defense, or any number of combinations.

Like I said, I'm sure variants of this have been suggested, and Rare has already indicated they have no interest in updating Arena anyway, but it's fun to think about what could have been. An Arena with CTF, King of the Hill, TDM, Last Ship Standing, and other variants might have really taken off.

  • This is all custom server stuff
that'll be when it's the right time for all of that imo

Then keeping up activity doesn't matter people can create whatever scenario they want.

  • Cough cough... it's called emissary...cough cough...

It's a shame that all the awesome ideas associated to Arena are just getting chalked up to "welp...wait for custom servers"... Especially for an idea like this, getting an on-demand custom server that's fully populated and prepped for such an "event" is far fetched.

Sure, you could gather a bunch of people that are interested and want to do it from 12 to 4 on a Saturday and can rotate out all the slots as matches complete. But it's probably going to be impossible to hop into such a custom server at, say, 3pm on a Tuesday when you happened to wrap up work early and are looking for a short SOT session.

I get it, that's the reality for all the cool Arena-focused ideas, but it's still a shame.

  • I wasn't aware that custom server would allow you to craft game modes, game physics, scoring systems, etc. That's very interesting. I thought it was just an empty arena or adventure server you could host and invite friends to. I'll have to look into that further, sounds much more interesting than I had originally thought.

Also, I understand emissaries have flags, but I'm talking about a full-on CTF mode. Sinking someone and turning in their flag isn't what I was talking about, even though that's fun enough on it's own šŸ˜‚

    Genius response. 😁

  • @galactic-geek except, it has nothing to do with what I’m taking about. Sinking a ship and turning in their flag isn’t CTF.

but didnt you Capture the flag if you did that ?

sadly Arena is dead just not burried (yet) Rare have said a year ago that no further development time will go towards the gamemode

  • @callmebackdraft I’m talking about the game mode ctf, which is significantly different than sinking ships for loot.

  • @sammyr0cks the first sentence was more in jest, but you didnt read what i said after that it seems

  • There's a community made CTF type of thing called Skullball i've participated in a couple of times. Loads of fun.

  • Like, in arena, because it’s pretty dead, I commonly run into people that I know just by hopping

  • i like this! it could help arena, which is so sadly dead

  • @callmebackdraft I did see it. I said basically the same thing in my original post. Sadly, you are correct, it's dead.
