Open crew will matchmake worldwide, but it does try to find similar connections. Closed crew is regional. If you want a better ping, start a session in closed crew and then open it up in settings to let others join you.

If you don't want to play with a certain person, block them on Xbox Live and it shouldn't matchmake you with them again.

  • ok thanks for that tip

  • If you want to be the host/connect to closest quickest server launch the game as private crew then just switch it to open.

I didn't even know this. How'd you figure it out (assuming what you say is true, of course)?

Just another nugget of information picked up from Twitch streams. The game will try to match you as close as possible with other players but, when the population isn't high enough, you can be matchmade onto servers further afield with Open Crew. NAT can also affect matchmaking - a closed or even moderate NAT will narrow matchmaking options.

Only really tends to be an issue at times like now when the game's population is so low. I would personally never call the game "dead", I think that's not really fair but it is currently in the 100th spot on Steam stats. We usually get this lull in the 3rd month of an update (and there are lots of new games out) so I'm not concerned.

  • @realstyli Here's a funny story you:
Earlier this evening I spent a few hours sailing as a Reaper with a friend who is new to the Sea. Together we defeated a fleet battle and made it quickly to level 5, where we spotted 3 Emmisaries on the map. Seeing 1 at Thieve's Haven, we steadily made our approach. As we drew in close, they spotted us and tried to make a run for it. In their haste, they fired a couple of chainshots at our mast, and succeeded in blowing up our gunpowder barrel, disabling us in the process - we sank in short order. I then received a GG message from the opposition. I replied by letting them know that I was training a friend and said friend wanted to ally with them. So, we met up at Plunder Outpost, started the Alliance, sold all of our stuff. After a while, our allies said they would leave to start a galleon for all 4 of us. We agreed. A few minutes later, they asked us to check our map table for a Reaper's Mark flag at a specific location - they had jumped right back into the server they had just left! 😅
