Shark phobia accessibility

  • Me and my partner both have severe phobias with sharks and/or enemies inside water and I've heard rare are looking into more accessibility options.

The game "grounded" features spiders and has an option to change their appearance/delete them for people that suffer spider phobias

We've wanted to play SOT since it released but we can't enjoy the beautiful sea and game without also dealing with the inevitable various sharks and shark bosses(megalodon)

My suggestion would be to add an option to the settings that:

Replace them with completely new enemies like evil mermaids or something of a more humanoid nature (with new animations otherwise it won't change the phobia as it'll still be a shark with a different skin)

Or just remove everything from the sea apart from harmless fish and dolphins and completely disable the megalodon battle with more ghost ships or something (not giant squids)

  • Absolutely this!

We won't play the game until sharks have been removed!

  • Ahoy maties!

A reminder to all - please remember to be civil and respectful to one another. I will not be posting anymore warnings here. I will just be removing posts that are not constructive and taking further action on accounts that ignore this warning and continue to bait and troll.

  • Can I suggest phobia accessibility gets consolidated to a single thread, like how arena threads were shut down for a period.

Seems to attract trolls, both through posts and replies.

  • @wsurftvveeds Good shout matey!

I will see what the team feels about this one.

For now, we do have our dedicated accessibility website where you can submit your suggestions.

Why is the Kraken a problem? It isn't a shark so it shouldn't fit the phobia. Its strange to exclude that one, to me that just comes off as using a phobia as an excuse to limit obstacles in this game. If the phobia is sharks, targetting non-sharks is just silly. Hell, mermaids share more characteristics to sharks than Squids and Octopi, yet the line isn't drawn there.

In fairness to the OP, Rare did put a call out for accessibility requests. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt when it's reasonable.

A fear of sharks falls, in my opinion, into the "reasonable requests" category, especially given that the sharks in the game fall into the "Jaws" trope of being more aggressive than they are IRL.

I don't see Rare even considering removing them, that's not realistic, but doing what Grounded did with spiders seems within scope.

  • @realstyli I made no judgement either way on this particular OP in my defence, just that there's a fair few discussions about related things, with the potential for it to get off the rails - exactly like the "fix arena" threads, where valid points got drowned out.

  • Replace the sharks and sirens with man eating splash tails.

  • I think what Grounded did for the appearance of spiders would be acceptable as it doesn't effect other players. Having an option to turn off shark and meg encounters would have an impact on the entire server which is unacceptable. Remember, this is a shared world, so it would have to be something implemented for the individual and not the world.

  • I don’t think new models would be necessary. Maybe do what grounded does and just make them big grey boxes that say “Shark” or “Meg” on them would be better for phobias.

Otherwise we’re talking about adding different creatures all together, instead of just changing something visual.

  • Ahoy there! We would like to have you raise a customer support ticket under the Accessibility category to let the team know about this concern. It assists us with tracking how many users are reporting a given issue, to better assess what can be done.

  • @workablesugar26 We have evil mermaids now, actually lowers the chances of sharks spawning.

    @ostara-mk @ninja-naranja
Agreed, the way they deal with it is good enough

Just replace the models with the ones from development, those cylindrical shaped fellows and all would be good, no need for complex new models.

@tehstepford Rare painted themselves in a corner now, they can't accommodate a few phobias and not others (even nautical entities in a nautical game).

  • @mr-nostalgic01 Sharks are a pretty big part of the game and they're not going to be removed. Don't spend a lot of time in the water, and if a meg spawns on you, sail to a nearby island or rock formation and they will despawn.

  • Without trying to sound unkind at what stage do we draw a land in the sand with regards to accessibility? Shark phobia? Skelly phobia? Water phobia?

Genuinely asking, not trying to be sarcastic.

  • So many phobias…

What about those who are scared of the dark and enclosed areas? Can we make the small caverns larger and those pits with spikes be removed?

Let’s not forget fear of heights. Climbing to the crows nest or simply coming to the edge of a cliff

Not being sarcastic I’m pointing out a lot of things to be ware of and may or may not appear in the future as a “possible thread”
And that is a very small audience

Rare made the choice to offer changes for those with issues but be reasonable.

For me. I hate the snake in the basket poking his head out and looking at me. Sure use music but it lasts a few seconds. That freaky and I hate and fear snakes. :o

    Just my two cents.

  • Doing the boxes idea would probably be better, but I can’t get over the thought of just having giant bananas replacing all of the phobias. Don’t like sharks? Banana with fins. Don’t like snakes? Slithering bananas. Don’t like the Kraken? Banana tentacles.

  • @hijack-hayes there is a point where if people choose to play this game they have to deal with whatever it has in it. There are sharks * literally* on the cover of the game.

There’s a certain point where stuff gets unreasonable to ask for. Kinda like asking if meat could be toggled off. Not saying the sharks are unreasonable but it’s not like the OP and their loved one didn’t know the game had them before they bought it. Since again, cover of the game.

I seriously am very impressed with all the accessibility options Rare is working on/has worked on. But not every single thing can be accommodated. What if someone has a fear of Pirates? Or Water? Things that are integral parts of the Sea of Thieves.
