How are you guys getting all the commendations for the event done? Is there perhaps a strategy I have overlooked to maximize my time getting the event done.

@hijack-hayes For the ocean crawlers part, just do the Sunken Pearl tall tale. You should be able to get 500 favour in one run if you use the provided Tridents to kill crawlers, siren leaders and the queen.
For the gems part, I think the best method might be doing Athena runs and sinking skeleton ships and fighting Megalodons along the way.
Finished it farming small islands (sea dogs, old salts, salty sands) of ocean crawlers. Skelly ships, occassional meg, shipwrecks & floaters. Quickest seemed to be server hopping for nearby shipwrecks and island hop along the way. If a reaper crate was near, we'd hit that too and leave the crate. Mermaid statues and island spawns seem to have been drastically cut, along with rowboats, and normal island threats in some servers so it's best to bounce around until you find a normal server. If they were supposed to increase the instances of drops or statues, someone dropped the ball because it's broken.
@drizkillz see and that was the aspect I had noticed too, there seems to be hardly any statues for mermaid gems, it seems like it is more likely to be a focus on siren gems based on spawn rates.
why can't people just play the game. you'll get all these awards without even having to do anything special or extra ordinary. I guess if you only know PVP you're confused as to what a voyage is and what are shipwrecks, crawlers, and merfolk. You know those barrels that are randomly floating in the water and you check for chain shots...the red/green/blue shiny things right next to them are gems. You can't sail more than 5 minutes without seeing one. 500 minutes or just over 8 hours of sailing will get you 100 gems without having to do any voyages. this does require actual sailing though, not just sitting at an outpost cycling through cosmetics endlessly.
@leftypirate99 well, thanks for your insightful post oh wise one. I do play the game, some of us have lives which mean we have to maximize our time on the seas. I'm not sure why me asking a question has irritated you to the extent that you had to wade in and make the post about yourself. Appreciate the salt though Lefty.
@leftypirate99 Well, someone's a grumpy pirate today, lol. Your idea is all fine and well chief, but you need to realize that servers are full of people doing the exact same thing so the normal supply is a little skimp at the moment & I can easily see players strapped for time trying to get through this when the spawn rate of gems is down and everyone on the horizon is looking specifically for them.
the point is it is foolish to try to maximize your time searching for them, they show up randomly. the best way to find them is cover as much ground as possible. Every one needs some 'trick' or 'short cut'. they waste more time doing this than just collecting what is right in front of them. evidence: the person saying they server hop for shipwrecks which are visible from their spawn outpost. what a complete waste of time vs. just sailing, you know, playing the game.
there isn't always a shortcut to success other than time.
@leftypirate99 whatever floats your boat, crewmate of mine finished it in 2 days doing it that way and I got it done a couple days later when I put focus on it & now I can just play whenever & however I'd like. My reply was in response to the OP and for anyone else who may be under time constraints or wish to just focus on other things in the game right now. I appreciate you telling me how to play my game though.
@drizkillz Im not telling you how to play the game, im just pointing out since gems are randomly placed there is no viable strategy to accelerate completion other than just sailing, which is to say just playing the game. Clearly this is rejected from most of the community in that it flies in the face of click-bait culture that there is a shortcut and a way to game the system at all times. Sometimes there isn't 'a sneaky trick only insiders know about to achieve x.'
I will give you the best strategies for the event. Took me 1 day to deliver 100 gems.
Most efficient way (Needs 4 people, can be done solo as well)
Rowboat and ammo crates are optional, but would make the grind a bit easy.
You select 4 islands that are close to each other and leave 1 member on each island. Stay on a tall rock and kill any creature that spawns. I advise you to leave at least 2 people on big islands, so they would have access to the ammo crate. I suggest using pistol + sniper combo, so you won't have to move at all. It gives you 10 gems per person per hour, so with a Galleon crew, 40 gems an hour with little to no effort. I did my last 30 gems this way solo on Lookout Point island.Consistent way (Needs 2 people, can be done solo)
Fully completing Thieves Haven runs, one of your crew mate (2 if you have more than 1 person. If you have a rowboat, one of them can row to Devil's Ridge and stay there farming crawlers and doing riddles) stays on TH while you sail to the riddle locations and kill skeleton ships, sell gems along the way. It nets you around 15 gems an hour if you are efficient.
Or you can just sail around gather gems from Barrels of Plenty, skeleton ships and small islands (Shipwreck Bay almost always has a Mermaid Statue) while farming miles and emissary flag grades for commendations.
@leftypirate99 I've sailed way more than eight hours, have done Thieve's Haven, shipwrecks, skelly ships, Ocean Crawlers, Sirens, Mermaid Statues, and Flotsam Grabs. I still need 37 more gems. The fact that full-time streamers have still not been able to complete this event means that gems are not as easy to come by as you are implying.

Full-time streamers may have audiences that are not captivated by Thieves' Haven Runs and such 😀.
Island hopping and Captains on large islands was my strat. If you don't find a Captain, take a trip to the Ferry to force a refresh. The riddles often gave two or three gems in the treasure chest (but, it's all RNG, of course so you could end up with none), and the islands often had mermaid statues and ocean crawlers. Tridents are great for breaking statues.
I finished the event solo with a week to spare and I didn't even play that much.
@chakprospero I never said easy, i said there is no clickbait 'one suprising sneaky trick RARE doesn't want you to know about' answer to this question. People can't seem to believe this is the case and the only way to complete this is just sail miles. The gems are there, but you only get them by visiting as many islands as possible, stopping at shipwrecks, stopping at floating barrels. All things streamers are loath to do because its not pvp/tucing content their audiences seem to love.
The only way to complete this is to just stay active and keep sailing.
