Instanced Athena's content

  • With the advent of Pirate's Life, instanced content is firmly on the table. Here's what I'd love for an Athena's update:

Pay $150k for a Legendary Expedition from Athena's Fortune.

You travel to a smaller instanced map. This is hard mode. There are other player ships, and no additional wood or food to be found. Once your ship is sunk, you spawn back to the main map.

The map is covered with extremely aggressive skellie ships. If they spot you from afar, they rush to engage and are very accurate.

If you reach the center of the map, there's an island with a ruined fort. You must hold the fort for five minutes while being bombarded by waves of skellies, skellie ships, and potentially other players.

If you hold the fort for five minutes, you receive a relic which is visible to all other players (like a reapers chest). If you sail that relic back to the main map, you can turn it into Athena's Fortune for a piece of a highly coveted gear set. Every additional successful mission nets you another piece of gear.

This approach combines the unpredictable PVE of adventure mode with the competitiveness of Arena, increases the difficult for veteran players, and provides a needed gold sink (now that most gear is earned through events).

    Thoughts?

  • The only problem with this, is that it ends the game.

Currently there is no endgame, even pirate legend or Athena 20. They’re just milestones you can reach, they don’t unlock much. This would bring an end to the game which shouldn’t even exist in a sandbox game.

Maybe one day, but the devs have said they plan to keep the game going for at least 10 years. How they plan to keep attention to it that long I have no idea, but this would cut that short by 7 years.

  • I believe that this mission shouldn't exist. As an endgame experience pirate legends should have access to some exclusive activities and content (more precise ship customisation, like captain quarters.) Adding this mission wouldn;t bring in any new mechanics into the game, but will only create another fort of fortune kind of mission. Id rather grind gold to customise my own hideout (hope they'll add it with captiancy update one day) than getting mad about hoards of skelly ships who sink me while I payed 150k gold for that.

  • I am not paying $150,000 for any kind of in-game content unless it's the freaking holodeck.

  • I like how there is no endgame in SoT.

I have been at Athena level seven for three years, barely even interested in advancing further.

Pirate Legend was a speedbump I did not care to notice.

I also enjoy how elitism means little in this game and cries for captaincy updates are always entertaining.

  • @aribalam said in Instanced end game content:

The only problem with this, is that it ends the game.

You (and others) seem mostly to be reacting to the fact that I used the words "end game" in my post. While I don't see how this activity would "end the game," just so there's no confusion, I replaced those words with "Athena's Fortune." Please let me know if this changes your thoughts at all re-reading.

  • Taking players out of the world in a game built on player interaction is a bad idea. I'm all for a giant set piece mega event, but there is no reason to hide it in an instance. Pirates life tall tale 5 is a good example, and we will probably see somthing similar at some point on the recently accessible edges of the map.

  • @prescafatty Definitely like the idea of instanced content for AF. Especially opt in content with a fair sum for entry. Unlike voyages, there's some sort of punishment if you fail. It's a good way to deal with the issue of less experienced players having to deal with hard content, cause they don't have to if they don't want to.

I also like the idea of a 'hardcore' type instanced challenge, where you only get one life (ship I guess).

Also am a fan of a 'king of the hill' type quest. It's something we don't have currently in SoT (you could argue world events do that, but not as well as a mission focused on delivering that experience).

Also like the idea of the reward being a new set that you need to unlock by handing in this new loot. Unsure if it should be similar to Tomes, where the relic you get is random but the loot is fixed for the relic, or each piece of the set locked behind commendations, and each piece requires 1 extra relic handed in or something.

I like the idea. It works as a good gold sink and can serve as some actual difficulty, which is lacking in PvE. Plus instanced content just lets you get more creative.

  • @mferr11 thank you for seeing the potential in this idea. Competitive instances open up all sorts of gameplay possibilities. I hope Rare takes full advantage.

  • Just want to point to all the naysayers that Falcore made a video about this EXACT SAME IDEA and it's got nothing but love.
