What is the point of doubloons nowadays?
Doubloons used to be rare and you could buy rare stuff with them. Now you can get them left and right but there is absolutely no use for them at all. Basically everyone has 5k+ in doubloons

Kinda like the Gold they just throw it at you making it completely worthless. It’s a parasitic system in SoT because it depends on SOT but doesn’t actually improve on the core system other than add bad bloat. Many things are that way in many games because it’s the easy way to throw more content at the wall while ignoring the glaring issues of the system by simply patching it out of usefulness.

They once had a cool idea of time limited cosmetics which is just gone, they amount to spare change atm, think of it as a savings account that you can cash out when you really want the money.
There's no point to doubloons.... they're round! :P
Seriously, it does seem they're phasing them out. Really only useful for a few voyages and such from Larinna, and the legacy Black Market items that are now in the outpost stores.
I second the tip about converting them to gold during Gold & Glory weekend and Gold Rush. Combining the two will give you 3X the amount of gold. I'd keep a few for Athena Run voyages, just in case.

The problem is that Rare made doubloons farmable. By doing this, they became worthless.
In the old days you earned doubloons from completing different commendations and could by cosmetics and use the leftovers to buy a level or gold. With the introduction of the reaper bones chest everything went downhill. Rare most likely made them worth doubloons because doubloons were rare and the reaper chests were marked on the main. Rare wants player interaction. Unfortunately it didn’t work out that way. It just turned into a farming mechanic for fast level up. To fix this Rare had to lock the level up to one a month.
I had 1000 doubloons before they were farmable. I have over 20,000 now. I rapidly bought my Sea Dog levels before they were locked. I’m sure many people did the same for Hunters Call.
Wasn’t negative at all, just the sad facts of parasitic systems being very easy to add into a game and that they typically are made obsolete over time to introduce the next parasitic system.
I mentioned it because it’s a game design trap, and many designers don’t even know they are doing it.
By pointing out what it is the designers at Rare can now wisely steer clear of such a trap and potentially remedy the problems associated with it.

I am pretty sure that it giving you double gold during G&G is a bug/exploit. I don't think this is intended.
