Speed Hack

  • About ten minutes ago I was pursued by a ship flying a legendary flag. Not a big deal, but he was gaining, and I was actually keeping my sail trimmed and dumping barrels. I turned to keep full wind, dumped another barrel, but he still gained, and chain shot my mast. I had just logged on, so not a big deal, but this isn't the first time this has happened.

When I first logged on either at the tail end of beta or just after, no one could gain on anyone. But this last year or so since I came back to the game it seems like no matter how much I keep my sail trimmed or tack, the other ship can always close no matter what.

    It's getting pretty frustrating.

Different types of ship have different speeds.

Also different speed per type in relation to the wind.

From your story it's not clear they were on the same shiptype as you were or not.

  • @fantome-of-blue
As lemon curry said, different ships have different top speeds in different situations

    • galleon is faster then any of the other ships when it gets wind from the back (tail wind)

    • brigantine is fastest when it gets full sails from the side (cross wind)

    • sloop is faster then any of the bigger ships when going directly against the wind with the sails put in a neutral position, also for the sloop specifically if you are unable to get a full billow in a particular direction then it is best to put the sails in a neutral position.

Loot and stuff on board does not affect sailing speed

R O F L imagine if it did though?!? We'd be sailing backwards! HAHAHAHAH Or sinking occasionally!

  • Dropping a lit keg on just the right time might give a boost though ...

  • Sorry for not being clear, we were both in sloops.

I've had Brigantines catch me, nearly been caught by galleons (which I can always out maneuver). But sloops seem to gain on me for some reason. that never used to be the case.

What was the wind, and how did you keep your sails?

    1. Items on ship don't make a difference in speed
    2. You sure you're facing the sails the correct direction? Sloop is fastest against the wind with the sails facing the wind. Not very logical but it works

Are you serious? If that's true, then that explains a lot. I always keep my sails trimmed for tacking against the wind. To find out that sloops go faster when sails are squared against the wind ... it's just another notch as to why I quit playing after a year and a half when the game was first released.

There was another time when some guy was chasing me around the rocks in the middle of the map, and the same thing was happening. No matter how I trimmed my sail he kept gaining on me.

But it gets even more strange because in another chase I had a sloop and a brigantine chasing me through a storm, but the brigantine couldn't gain any ground. I exited the storm, cranked my wheel hard right, trimmed my sail, and gained distance with speed until they exited the storm.

I had a galleon chase me, and I sailed into the wind with my tail trimmed for tacking, and they couldn't gain on me. But then this latest incident happened, and it's like "how are they gaining on me?" And "how are they evading my gunpowder barrels?" So I got suspicious and started this thread.

I just play this game casually. I don't really get competitive, I get into a battle every now and then, but I play it because it's like all the other online games I've played get infested with hacks at some point.

    Whatever.

  • @fantome-of-blue ya it's dumb but just square your sails into the wind. There is no benefit to tacking. I wish there was, but after playing Valheim and how much that upset/frustrated people, I can see why the devs of SoT don't have tacking. I do at least wish squaring your sails when sailing into the wind wasn't a thing, that's my biggest gripe with the game honestly.

  • @fantome-of-blue Check out this video to see how the sails on the different ships work. It can save you further frustration and confusion. Skip to 6:15 for the relevant info.

Here's a visual that summarizes that video.

  • I really want to swear up a storm right now, but I don't want my thread locked and I don't want to get banned.

So all that tacking I did back in beta and just after was totally useless. And some dude in a sloop can catch my sloop even though by all rights he should be going backwards with this sail perfectly squared against the wind.

You know, I thought that this was a bug way back when, and that it would get fixed. But now you revealed to me that it's intentional.

    I can't get over this.

No wonder all that maneuvreing I was doing wasn't giving me the advantage in battles.

I really can't get over this. It's a wonder I got as far as I did in this thing.

There ought to be a few lines of code that says when the wind hits your sail at this angle you go this fast. But I guess that's asking too much.

Aimbots in Counter Strike, invulnerability hacks in Battlefield, reveal maps in Age of Empires, and now the sailing model doesn't reflect real world physics in SOT.

    Whatever.

    I may uninstall this thing.

    That's a bit much, isn't it?

You got as far as you did because you are skilled.

Now knowing you should square your sails against the wind on a sloop, will make you even greater a player.

Wait until your hear how you can shoot gunpowder weapons under water and shoot people out of cannons.

  • Aye and it's a video game. FPS games aren't realistic to real world combat either nor does eating a pineapple to heal and recover from your wounds. You sound like with a bit of quick game knowledge that would wreck other players. Do some research from the links posted in this thread and also from Phuzzybond on Youtube and I think that you'll enjoy the game more. Tacking would be fun as would having to swab the deck but it'd be a lot of management piled on top of what is already a lot while in combat.

Sloops are great because of their maneuverability but lack in speed. Gotta get good at those chain shots. You've got this! Hang in there!

Umm no one said it was intentional. In fact, when it was originally brought to Rare's attention like 2 years ago at a con (it was a fan question during a Q&A), the dev specifically said that was not the intention, and they woukd look into correcting it.

The fact that it hasn't been corrected means it has to be more complex than just editing a couple lines of code.

  • Well, I'm going to take another break from this game. But thanks for the replies.

  • Dropping anchor then :)

    Fair winds!
