Simply put, how do I get better at PvP?

  • I have played Sea of Thieves for quite a while know, and I feel that I am getting quite a grip of the game overall, except one thing. I don’t think in all of my time playing Sea of Thieves, that I have won a PvP. I cant seem to, no matter how hard I try. They are either too quick or whatever… I don’t really know why. It is something I want to be able to do somewhat confidently, instead of running in an endless pursuit of escape which will only end in the inevitable demise of my character and a trip to the Ferryman. A side-note is that I usually play solo, which probably attributes to such difficulty, so perhaps the problem is that I need friends; but if you sail solo, and you are able to walk, or rather sail, out of the other side of a fight, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

There are plenty of YouTubers and Streamers out there that offer PvP advice for single players. My favorites are Blurbs and PhuzzyBond.

My own advice to you is to avoid situations that favor the larger crews. In other words, don't try to engage them in a straight up fight. You are one disabled mast or dropped anchor away from losing the fight. Instead, utilize hit-and-run and decoy tactics. For example, get them to chase you, lead them past an inactive skeleton fort, swim over while your ship continues on, then bombard your pursuers with the fort's cannons as they pass.

  • There are many camps about which weapons to equip, but I love the sword/pistol combo. You get pretty good distance and hip fire from the pistol and I always recommend starting with sword blocking/dodging. After they’ve exhausted their swings you can move in for the kill. Phuzzy and Blurbs are great tipsters too as @limbicfanatic had mentioned…

  • @limbicfanatic Okay, thank you for the advice. I will check out those YouTubers and I will try to stave away from fights in the future. Unfortunately though, sometimes a fight is inevitable; when that happens, it is hard when playing solo. Once again, thank you

  • @ollieoxenfree I also love the sword/pistol combo. The pistol especially allows you to aim accurately and quickly. Thank you for the tip about the blocking/dodging. Thinking back, I rarely use that tactic so I might employ it from now on. Thank you for the help.

  • Probably the only thing Arena is good for is combat training. Try sloop open crew.

You practice combat piloting, naval artillery, and pirate killing with willing participants and no consequence.
You even get paid to finish a match.

You learn how to fight in Arena, then you sail with confidence in Adventure.
