Hand to Hand Combat System

  • I’ve played the game for a decent amount of time and the combat hasn’t changed whatsoever, it’s still very clunky and slow and relies on a terrible meta that blocks off a large portion of the community who just wants to have fun.

Swords are unusable against players because of the single slash attack and the delayed parry, the charge attack is useless in a fight and is only used for traversing water quickly.

I’ve found myself in countless fights having shot an enemy player multiple times and it having done nothing without them even healing.

The guns do little to no damage and the reload speed partners terribly with this. I know the game has a pirate era theme and of course modern guns didn’t exist back then so they had to resort to having slow reloads and such, however this does not excuse the fact that none of the guns do reliable damage for how long they take to reload.

Realistically, if a person was to take multiple steaming hot balls of lead to the body, they’d at least feel more pain than they do in SoT, it’s embarrassing how much damage these “weapons” do, it feels like I’m shooting a nerf gun half of the time.

Rare and Microsoft need to stop updating the game so frequently with shoddy DLC and fix the issues the players have been asking for. No one enjoys jumping about on an enemy ship mindlessly spamming guns and swords hoping that you’ll do more damage than the enemy player.

  • Answering assuming you aren't joking/trolling...
Ah, yes. That, my good friend, is the beauty of hitreg. All players are a two-shot kill most of the time. EoR doing about 70dmg, Flintlock doing 50dmg, blunder varying on range, sword 25dmg (Correct me if im wrong there). From experience, the sword is VERY useful in combat, sword lunges are very powerful if used properly.
I do agree, however, with this part:

Rare and Microsoft need to stop updating the game so frequently with shoddy DLC and fix the issues the players have been asking for.

We've all been asking for hitreg to be fixed, we all get the same response: "It continues to be a key part of the team's priorities," or something like that. Will it ever be fixed? Answer: Don't get your hopes up.

  • Meh... I enjoy jumping about on an enemy ship mindlessly spamming guns and swords until I die.

Came here expecting something about punching, since "hand to hand" usually implies that. And since you brought in guns, that's not really hand to hand anymore.

The combat system isn't meant to be intricate. It's meant to be easy to pick up and play, and more on the lighter side. If you want intricate melee combat or gunplay, there's plenty of other games for that. Asking Rare to redesign their combat system just because a percentage of the community doesn't like it is kind of a waste of time since they aren't going to do it. They made a fundamental design decision in regards to combat. If you don't enjoy it, there's other games to play.

  • @redbeardlmao

I highly doubt the hitreg will ever get fixed, it’s ridiculous honestly

I should’ve explained more about the whole “hand to hand” thing, probably would’ve been best to call it “Non ship fighting” or something along those lines.

Sure jumping around on a ship mindlessly attacking an opponent can be fun but sometimes i feel like it would be nice to have a more skill based system in play rather than just “who can bypass hitreg more often” simulator.

Yeah, no worries. I get it, I just am in the opposite camp on this one. But I also don't really play it for the PVP. I don't really want Rare to change it, but I understand why you and others do.

  • @alymon

Trust me I don’t really play it for the PvP either, I’m more than happy to sit back and just go from island to island getting gold and such.

The issue comes when trying to do an event of some sort like fort of the damned or just a normal fortress for that matter, there’s so many people usually going for the loot and even if you make an alliance with one ship, there’s bound to be more people headed your way.

I ran into this issue today actually, I had just hopped on after getting the newest update just to see what things were like and I was doing a skull fortress with a couple of friends, another ship came along and we allied with them, but then a sloop came over and just started bombing everything and instead of using swords they just doubled on guns, it was painful to deal with even though there were just two of them, the ship combat was fun but the normal combat was tedious and almost unfair for the average player (aka myself since I don’t play too often and I just want to have a good time)

Ah, fair. I should not have made that assumption. I don't know that it would fix things like this, but I definitely respect where you are coming from.

  • People still use swords and guns? I thought it all swapped to bouncing around using blunder bombs and fire? :D

  • I want more melee weapons in general. there could be a hatchet which is slower but more powerful or a dagger which does baby damage but is super fast.

I also think that the sniper should be nerfed to 50dmg as if used correctly, its basically an upgraded pistol if you get good at quickscoping.
