Returning player. Tried doing the Tall Tale Chapter 2 when we realized it was for the whole server. Clearly no-one tested fully the ramifications of this, or gave any thought as to how this might be an issue. We had to do puzzles three times, each time, just to get every crew up to speed. All for the very end where one crew rushed ahead and triggered the final boss where my crew couldn't enter at all. I like exploring and taking my time. I don't want to play these Tall Tales rushing to keep up with other crews, when I want to enjoy this world Rare created.
Making Pirate's Life Tall Tales open server was a terrible mistake.
@coldsheep
It's the second Tall Tale of this series. Not trying to spoil anything. You have to sail to a location where anyone can be down there. If causes a whole host of bugs and a mess. Yes, you can hurt other crews too during this.@scallywagmango I’m not doubting this is happening I’m just wondering if this is intended. It sounds extremely unintended.

I think it's unintended. It sounds like what is happening is that, because this tale takes place in the regular map, there are conflicts occurring where other crews can complete the tale or mess up your progress if they are doing the same one at the same time.
Sounds like a bug to me - similar to the vaults getting messed up sometimes on the original 9 tales depending on whether another crew was busy using it.
@scallywagmango so on the main menu they now have "a pirates life" and Adventure mode..... what the heck. Whats the point of this? Like I just hopped in to check it out and the pirates life made me start on the beach instead of the tavern.... I was under the impression this was their first attempt at a PvE server style content as why would they make it a whole new option on the main menu when you go to play.
So youre saying its just the same thing? This just sounds dumb. Added a whole menu button just to have people spawn at the quest start location so they dont get confused as to where to go? I really dont know what the deal is with the dev team. 19.5 million people have quit the game. Safe to say at least 1/4 of that left due to no PvE server. Most left just because of how barebones the gameplay was (and in some ways still is) Literally everyone I know and played with at launch quit within 2 months and has never even thought about coming back. In fact ive lost friends due to sticking with this game as long as i did.
@coffeelight5545 you dont have to find anyone to help you. You can do them all by your onesie!
But there are LFG posts on xbox and discord. Even groups on facebook to help you match up with a crew.
One of my friends admins for the biggest Sea of Thieves Facebook group. There are always LFG posts there.
@coffeelight5545 A single crew can do it if necessary, it is a water puzzle that you need to use a pistol or eye of reach to hit the statues and first lower the water before raising it (using the solution provided in a tunnel on the second level next to the lift) to access the upper part of the chamber. I went through solo and did it.
It appears that the second, fourth, and fifth Tall Tale for Pirates Life is an open world event, just like all the previous tall tales.
So you essentially have everyone converging on this single location and players are experiencing overlapping progress. Not an ideal experience.
Whereas Pirates Life Tall Tales 1&3 are closed world experience.
It is my opinion that the second, fourth, and fifth Tall Tales for Pirates Life should also be a closed world experience too.

there was no new content added to adventure mode. so the devs had to give something for pvpers to hunt. tall tales are back on the menu.
Tall Tales are part of Adventure mode. We also got new enemies, new loot, new weapons, new cosmetics, etc. making the claim that they added “no new content” a bit silly.

Griefing pirates are congregating on the first dive. My son has encountered 3 pirates at depth now, killing him as soon as he reached the Black Pearl in the Catacombs.
That’s pretty lousy. What kind of pathetic loser must one be to camp a Tall Tale like this just to grief people? I’m all for PvP but that’s just lame.
Unfortunately they celebrate board and bomb Timmy and Jimmy so no one wants to play.
It takes someone like me who plays games almost all day every day almost a year to get thru tall tale commendations because you can’t even get a server with people who are smart enough to know when they’re wasting cannon balls.

there is no new adventure focused event this patch other than the tall tales. I hunt people who are doing the new events, whether that's vaults, voyages, new fort, or a new tall tale.
@galactic-geek Rare boasts they have reached 20 million players. They cant count game "sales" as it is a gamepass game so technically free. So the metric they use to measure their success (publicly, inhouse they are probably ashamed) is pirates created aka players. Since you can only have 1 pirate per account.
So to figure out a best guess at how many people are actively playing sea of thieves you need to look at the most recently added achievements. look at the % of the players that have completed it (that is the % of the 20 million) and do the math.
Not counting this new tall tale achievements the last easy to complete achievement i looked at had about 300,000 or so people completed it. so i rounded up a bit to account for the number of players who probably dont quest and just pvp.
This game has always been a revolving door of players. Its sad because they have created soemthing amazing but the reward structure and lack of server types, IE role play server, pve server, pvp server just turns some people off. Ive lost friends due to having played this game for 3 years. and literally no one i played with at launch has ever considered coming back. It took me 3 years to finally cave in and see that the Devs (and Joe Neate especially) doesnt want me playing their game. I have no place here. So I can sit in que on a pve discord to have to follow strict rules.... Or cheat. Or just set sail out of the sea of thieves.

It's one thing to kill another ship/players once and move on. It's another thing to camp the single spot needed to complete a tale and repeatedly attack the same players over and over again with no gain. Sink me once, kill me once, congratulations, you outdid me, fair kill. Repeatedly attack the same person over and over again with no gain to you, you are just being a troll. You aren't skilled. You aren't "hunting". You are being toxic.
@alymon u can always leave the server. if u choose to stay. I will fight u again. most the time I'm not sure if in fighting the same crew again or if it's a different crew. keep in my I play this game after have a couple of drinks of 'rum'. so I just shoot things that pop in front of me.

I don't feel the need to keep repeating myself to you on every thread. We disagree. Leaving the server doesn't solve the problem when people are doing it on every server. Instead of blaming others for your toxicity, maybe stop being toxic. You want to sink another crew, have at it. Sinking the same crew repeatedly is toxic behavior that harms the community and drives people away from the game. There's no benefit to that for you, for me or for Rare.
@alymon pvping isn't toxic. sinking the same vessel isn't toxic. pirating isn't toxic.
screaming obscenities, slurs, while sinking someone. I consider this toxic. I always give GGs to crews I sink.
even on the forums, I try not to degrade anyone but express my point of view on a topic.
I sink evey ship I see. if u find urself on my server, ur probably going to fight me. if I sink or u sink either way it's GGs all around in my mind.
@galactic-geek said in Making Pirate's Life Tall Tales open server was a terrible mistake.:
@magus104 19.5 million have quit? Where are you getting that info from?
I can’t say that number is accurate but I personally know 3 people who played Sea of Thieves and quit playing well over a year ago and haven’t been back since. These are people who I physically know. On average, I only see 300+ LFG posts and that’s during peak playing hours. Yesterday, I did see 500+ LFG posts but given the new content, it’s natural.
All the rewards are strictly cosmetic. There is no upgrading weapons or ships. There is no official storylines except for the tall tales. Pirate legend is a joke because it offers almost nothing except accept to a few voyages. Day 1 pirates had almost nothing in the game except the 3 original factions and their respective voyages. If Rare hadn’t added additional content to the game, it would have died years ago
It’s understandable that Rare has lost players in the past. I’m not entirely sure what keeps me playing this game. Rare many have over 20 million pirate profiles but not all are active. The question is, how many players are active and have played within the last month or so

First, I never said PVP is toxic. That's a mischaracterization of the point. Second, toxicity to the community is rarely successfully defined by those who are toxic to the community. Naturally, those that behave that way do not see their behavior as toxic or you would hope they would actively seek to improve and not be toxic.
Camping the one spot needed to progress a portion of the game to attack empty ships and sink them repeatedly to try to hinder those players from enjoying the story content is toxic. It doesn't drive people away from your server. It drives people away from the game. Most people aren't going to care if you attack them once and sink them. Most people aren't going to complain because you caught them off guard and sunk their ship while they weren't paying attention. Rarely will people complain in a fair fight if they were paying attention. People are complaining because they cannot progress in the new story content at all because server after server, people are camping the only spot needed to progress the Tall Tale and it's blocking them from enjoying the whole point of the latest update. If you don't understand why that is harmful to the community and toxic, that's something you need to reflect on. When people get frustrated because they can't enjoy the game, they stop playing. When people stop playing, there's less people buying new content. When less people buy new content, Rare gets less funding for new content. It's a downward spiral that harms the quality of the community, the quality of the game and the longevity of the game. It's toxic.
@alymon it's not toxic. it's poor design.i go where the player ships are. whether it's tall tales , emmissy voyages, events, etc. it's called ambushing.
don't blame the player, blame the game.

Exploiting game design in a way that impacts the community negatively is exactly what toxicity is about. You aren't supporting your case, you're only providing more examples of why you are being toxic.

you can keep calling me toxic if you like, but I will still continue to hunt players in the adventure pvpve world. you are safe nowhere. if u don't like the situation you are in, that is why the devs added the scuttle and leave server menu option. sorry that you got sunk. see you on the seas.
@friedwilly Tall tales 1,3 are closed. 2,4,5 open. To say that the experience of Pirate's Life would be instantiated, it seems a little advertising scam.

Never said I got sunk, buddy. You assume too much. You aren't hunting. Hunting takes skill. Scuttling and changing servers doesn't solve the problem when there is literally one place people need to go to progress in the tall tale.
