Analysis of "A Pirates Life" Trailer

  • Hey all, I decided to do an analysis of the new Sea of Thieves trailer that just came out to detail each scene and give those theorists something to think about (looking at you Captain Falcore).

How this will work is that I'll include the main video underneath and start timestamp each scene of interest, describing what's in it (with some thoughts of what they could be), afterwards is the full dialog of the trailer before concluding with a theory of what and how the campaign will likely work.

    Scene Timestamps and Details

0:05-0:19 - The scene starts with the Rare Flag hooked up to what appears to be a pole covered in seaweed and barnacles, the scene then expands to show a giant fortress, its night time so its a bit difficult to see the details but it seems to have corals and other aquatic styles on it, this is evident further by the Rare flag and pole from appear also appears in this scene. The scene then expands again to show four ships approaching it, it is likely that the fortress is set in the main Sea of Thieves world.
0:20-0:21 - The video zooms in on Sanctuary Outpost, its hard to see but there is what seems to be a turquoise coloured tent there, along with what appears to be a new building though this is hard to tell.
0:22-0:26 - The scene cuts to Calypso before a green flame, behind her seems to be parts of a ship with shelfs that contain a Mini boat model, a sea shell, a skull with Jacks bandana (I don't know what its called) and book (this is likely the talltale book), the last shelf also has the same book but part of it is covered, along with what appears to be an ornament with a face on it.
0:27-0:30 - We are underwater now, this is definitely a new area which contains a ton of coral and a shipwrecked brigantine.
0:31-0:34 - Inside a cave with lots of water and tons of treasure in it, there is a chair on top of the gold pile with a skeleton on it (likely a captain), said skeleton is holding a chalice.
0:35-0:40 - We are now in the Sea of the Damned, the characters appear to be on a pathway and look over to see lots of shipwrecks with designs reminiscent to that of the Ferrymans Ship, along with a giant tower overlooking the whole thing. (I think this is the SotD version of Port Royal as one of the news post mentions that the Sea of the Damned is basically a dark trip down memory lane).
0:41-0:46 - Inside a ship, more specifically the brig area.
0:48-1:04 - We start with a funny scene of Jack trying to coerce the Prison Dog into giving him the key to his cell, referencing the first movie. The rest of the scene showcases our introduction to Jack Sparrow himself.
1:10-1:12 - Jack holding a box of some kind, the box has a sun-like emblem on it with a amber coloured jewel in the centre, it then changes to show Jack looking at the box in interest and it also shows the back of the box showing that is can be opened in some way.
1:13-1:15 - The scene shows what appears to be a portal opening in a rock formation.
1:16-1:18 - Gibbs behind some corals, I do not know if this is either a cell or he's in a different area with the coral blocking it but given the aquatic appearance, this is likely the inside of that fortress from way earlier.
1:19-1:21 - The scene starts with the characters using a rowboat with some very beautiful scenery in the background, it then changes showing that the characters are sailing to a house identical to that of Tia Dalma's (Calypso) Shack, the entire area itself is similar to that of its film counterpart, however it does contain a greenish aura which means this is in the Sea of the Damned.
1:22-1:25 - Not sure where this is but given the buildings design, this is probably Tia's Shack. The room contains with a few coins and books, along with a skeleton sitting in a chair. The crew puts back the skull on the skeleton who wakes up afterwards.
1:26-1:28 - Calypso uses the model ship from earlier and demonstrates what seems to be on how to enter a portal. We also get a full view of the building behind her.
1:29-1:31 - Sea of the Damned again, this time with Jack talking with the crew and they are what appears to be inside a tavern, this is likely after they free Jack.
1:32-1:33 - A glimpse of the new enemies called Ocean Crawlers, the crab looking ones seem to be a tank based enemy so they'll likely be heavy hitters (and large amounts of health), the two legged siren seems to use an eel as a whip likely meaning electric attacks and since they are the smallest its likely they are the fastest enemy as well, the next enemy has clam-like features though I am not sure as to what it does.
1:34-1:37 - Another glimpse of new enemies, this time being the Sirens. They are underwater enemies this time and from the looks of it seem to be quite fast.
1:38-1:41 - We get more view of the Port Royal segment and we get to see another set of enemies being the Phantoms. The announcement post implies that they are very fast.
1:42-1:44 - More of the tavern with Jack talking with the crew, this is probably an extension of the clip from 1:29-1:31.
1:45-1:50 - We start with The Flying Dutchman rising out of the water and by taking a closer look you can just see some of the Ocean Crawlers on the ship itself. Meanwhile the crew are on what appears to be the Ferryman's Ship (Battle of the Keepers of the Damned, Ferryman VS Davy Jones), it then cuts to show Mr Tentacles himself, Davy Jones.
1:51-1:58 - We more look of the ship that we are standing on whilst Jack suggests on using the cannons which cuts to the next scene of the Flying Dutchman firing and hitting our ship, it also confirms that the ship is the Ferrymans Ship as you can see just barely see the Ferryman behind the wheel.
1:59-2:04 - We see the crew carrying a chest in the SoT world whilst something is crawling underneath the sand, the clam like Ocean Crawler jumps out and starts attacking one of them giving us a hint as to how this one works which seems to be ground and surprise attack based.
2:05-2:07 - The scene shows a giant mermaid statue rising out of the sea, again in our world. This is likely a puzzle.
2:08-2:10 - We see Davy Jones ordering his crew which then cuts to showing a massive wave of energy coming out of the Flying Dutchman, my guess is that Davy Jones activates a portal to get from the Sea of the Damned to our world.
2:11-2:14 - More of the phantoms and Port Royal, we don't see exactly how they work but we do see them pop out of nowhere.
2:15-2:23 - One of the pirates and Jack go against the crab like Ocean Crawler, the old pirate uses what seems to be a staff and launches a bubble like projectile against the crawler (new weapon?) with a bit of a funny scene with Jack hoping for a second one. We get to see more of the inside of the coral like area which again implies this is the inside of the fortress itself. There is also a Mermaid Statue behind the characters which is likely a checkpoint.
2:24-2:27 - We see Jack and another pirate sliding down a water slide before coming out of a giant crying stone head before landing in a pit of water. I think this safely concludes that this all takes place in the Fortress show in the beginning of the trailer.
2:28-2:29 - We see a couple of bubble projectiles (possibly from the staff as mentioned earlier) destroying a clock tower in Port Royal.
2:30-2:33 - There what seems to be a giant fortress in the background (its way too dark to see but I think its a different fortress entirely), there are also ghost ships in the area and you can just make out the Flying Dutchman here as well (this is likely connected to the scene at 2:08-2:10, in which I believe Davy Jones leave the Sea of the Damned and arrives at the Sea of Thieves and summoning ghost ships to fight us.
2:34-2:38 - This seems to be a new area in the Sea of the Damned but in the background, you can see what a gateway of sorts which looks similar to some concept art.
2:39 - The skeleton we woke up from before is shown straight up boss slapping another skeleton, I think this skeleton will be an ally.
2:40 - One of the pirates playing on Davy Jones's Organ (probably a puzzle).
2:41 - A lightning bolt strikes the coral-like fortress causing part of it to explode (I don't know if its part of the fortress or all of it).

    Dialogue

(I had to put spaces between the triple dots as they don't seem to work for some reason)
Unknown Woman (Siren?): "Yo ho, yo ho. A pirate's life for me"
Tia Dalma (Calypso): "An ill wind blows from beyond the horizon. . ."
Tia Dalma (Calypso): "A new danger is comin' on the tides."
Tia Dalma (Calypso): "An' the one who might stop this ruin. . .trapped for all forever in the Sea of the Damned."
Tia Dalma (Calypso): "Now, to save the Pirate Life. . .you must start by saving the life of one."
Jack Sparrow: "(whistles) Oh! Didn't realize we had company."
Jack Sparrow: "Captain Jack Sparrow. . .but I suspect you already knew that."
Gibbs: "Because of the treasure Jack stole. . .a darkness followed him here."
Gibbs: "And if it's not stopped, this world will sink into shadow."
Tia Dalma (Calypso): "The sea holds many secrets. . ."
Unknown Male (Skeleton): "Ahh, a new body at last!"
Tia Dalma (Calypso): ". . .all I can do is show you the way."
Jack Sparrow: "From what I hear of this so-called Sea of Thieves. . ."
    Jack Sparrow:
"It's nothing but cursed crews. . .bloodthirsty mermaids. . .a legion of dead, angry pirates. . ."
Jack Sparrow: "Oh yes. . .and now one Davy Jones!"
    Davy Jones: "SPARROW!"
Jack Sparrow: "Well. I believe that now is the perfect time to use these cannons."
Davy Jones: "A world without the eternal abyss. . .is a world that refuses to face the truth - nothing lasts forever!"
    Davy Jones: "DESTROY THEM!"
Jack Sparrow: "I don't suppose, by chance, there's a second one of those?"
    Jack Sparrow: "AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!"
    Jack Sparrow: "WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH-"
Jack Sparrow: "The Sea of Thieves, eh?"
Jack Sparrow: "Bring me that horizon!"

Theory on how this campaign will work

Given that the campaign will consist of Five Talltales, I'm going to guess in accordance to the trailer on what these tales will be about.

TallTale 1: I believe this starts with Calypso telling us about the looming threat and that to deal with it they'll need to go to the Sea of the Damned, however they have no way of accessing it as is so they'll need to find an item to do so which I believe takes them to the underwater shipwreck (first encounter with Sirens) and then the cavern with the goldpile.
TallTale 2: This happens shortly after the first one and the crew travel to the Sea of the Damned to find Jack Sparrow, then go a trip down memory lane (first encounter with the Phantoms), we'll probably first hear of Davy Jones.
TallTale 3: Returning with Jack, the group then journey to reach the Mermaid Kingdom which I believe involves the giant mermaid statue and ocean crawlers before going to the Mermaid Kingdom itself where we likely encounter Gibbs plus find a Mermaid Staff (the bubble shooting thing).
TallTale 4: The group return to the Sea of the Damned where we go through Port Royal with the new Mermaid Staff, battle phantoms and ocean crawlers then our first match with Davy Jones which ends with him arriving in the Sea of Thieves.
TallTale 5: I believe the final chapter concludes with us once again heading to the Mermaid Kingdom where we do one final battle with Davy Jones in a fort and ship battle.

That's my theory on the whole thing, anyways use the information at hand to come up with theories and ideas as to what you think could be in this campaign.

  • I decided to throw in some of my own analysis of the trailer that you hadn't mention yet.

The wreck at 0:27-0.30 may be the "Black pearl" as the figure head looks like a women holding a bird on it's left arm.

The brig area at 0:41-0:46 could be inside the ferry of the damned or in some shipwreck in Sea of the Damnded as it shares similar lanterns and candles we can see at areas like Fort-OTD and Ferry-OTD, not to mention the ghostly hands poking out of the other cages like hands under well of fathes.

1:19-1:21There seems to be firey warm light coming from the shack where as in the next scene at 1:22 the lighting is more eerily like at Ferry-OTD

1:26 the plantation above the cliff is just like one at Galleon's grave above the construction site.

1:32 The Ocean crawlers and Senirs appear to have Mermaid gems in their chests. As the larger Ocean crawlers have red gems and little smaller ones have green gems they probably scale in the difficulty the same way as Mermaid statues

2:11 Phantoms appear to be teleporting behind our main characters.

2:30 There appears to be at least two galleons side by side so maybe this will be some sort of alliance battle?

2:44 In the logo the swords are The Ferrymen sword and what seems to be the sword of Davy Jones so maybe the later one will be a reward for completing these tall tales?

  • I couldn’t imagine how long it took to write this… heck it took me awhile to get to the reply’s!!

  • My adds:

    2:08-2:10

I would theorize that this is actually the Flying Dutchman releasing the kraken as in the movie. The effect is definitely more pronounced in the sea of thieves trailer, but I think it is more likely. The clip just prior to the shockwave is them turning an anchor, again also like in the movie.

When the crew is carrying the treasure chest, I find it a bit strange that two pirates are carrying one chest, a marauders at that. Probably just for the cinematic trailer to match Disney's style, but just wanted to point it out.

Side note: Can anyone recognize the island at 1:59? It looks like an existing island maybe, but can't identify it. Confirmed Devil's Ridge. Thanks @Limend ! The angle of the camera makes the rock formations look a bit larger than in retail.

It's Devils ridge, little bit South West from the waterfall's pond.

  • @calicorsaircat

Right before the ocean crawler jumps from the ground you can see the cliff on right and the small "island" that are at the North Western side.

  • The fortress at the beginning is the Rare version of the Disney castle at the opening of all of their films

  • Nice note taking!

0:10 - "Fortress" is an obvious nod to the Disney castle
0:29 - You can make out what looks like the fortress from the opening above water in the background of this shot? The wreck is located in the same area?
    0:31 - Isla de Muerta?
0:38 - Cool eclipse, perhaps significant to the story? The "shadow" that Gibbs mentions?
1:20 - The eclipse can also be seen in the back of the bayou shack shot
1:29 - Crewmate is holding Jack Sparrow's compass? Unlockable cosmetic or usable Tall Tale item?
1:38 - Eclipse in the back of Port Royal... maybe just all these eclipse parts are the same Tall Tale?
1:54 - Jack's line about using the cannons, especially from the Ferry of the Damned, makes me think there's something special about those in particular... maybe a power that will help defeat the Flying Dutchman.
2:18 - The merperson statue behind Jack and the crewmate is missing a gem in its chest? Maybe we defeat the heavy ocean crawler to obtain one and use that with the statue to progress?
2:41 - This looks like the fortress from the start, or perhaps another structure that was visible in the back at 0:29?

  • Great post mate, very in depth and informative!

I'm guessing the new building will be where we start the new tall tales from.
Kinda like how we started the shores of gold from the Mysterious Stranger in the every tavern!

  • Judging Davy Jones' dialogue, he's opposed to the Sea of Thieves, particularly particularly Ferryman bringing pirates back to life as he does.

  • @limend it is the Black Pearl.

  • @calicorsaircat i completely agree with your theory that Davy Jones is summoning the Kraken but I'd bet its not the same Kraken we've be one used to fighting. Will it be his "pet"? Could we actually see an updated Kraken? Or maybe that pulse is what summons that giant Merfolk statue? Personally, I'm leaning towards it being a new Kraken but that might be just wishful thinking. The only thing I know for sure is that I haven't been this excited for an update since Cursed Sails that brought in the skeleton fleets.
