Make Tall Tales Separate

  • Make tall tales a separate instance like maiden voyage. I can look around and make sure that there are no ships on the horizon, but when the task is to go into a cave and fight a bunch of skeletons or do a puzzle, you're liable to come back and see your ship under attack. I see no reason why story mode game-play must exist in the same sphere as pvp. By all means keep voyages and other non-pvp tasks in the pvp server, but tall tales are a time investment that doesn't need to be held to the same risk.

  • I get what you are saying and how annoying an enemy ship can be when you are trying to complete a tall tale, but I don’t think they will separate them from the open world part of the game. Luckily in their current state you are able to use tall tale checkpoints to help regain lots items but you still have the downside of returning travel time.

  • why should a tall tale be safe in a pirate game

every tale in SOT involves piracy

checkpoints made tall tales a cake walk people lose very little progress now.

Although I support check points it made tall tales and the gold curse a cheesefest. The gold curse should represent not only the grind but survival in dangerous waters. Making it even easier than it already is makes the gold curse less significant

SOT is the first game I've ever heard of that allows pvp content to disrupt scripted story content. The inclusion of puzzles, gauntlets, and skeletons with voice over is really cool, but why does it have to have a permanent veil of "maybe my ship is in danger."? This isn't some "straw that broke the camel's back" declaration, and I'm not going to call killing people doing tall tales "griefing" or "toxic", but it'd be nice to be able to do a story mission without the pvp making me take the long trip back to the island again hoping that the ship has moved on.

A tall tale is an adventure as much as it is a story. What good is an adventure if it's safe and linear?

  • @dashopepper3917
It will also deprive you of the chance of running into helpful players when you get stuck.

  • Give tall tales their own separate instance. I see no reason why not. Just remove the gold reward after the first completion unless done in adventure. Also any cosmetics must be earned by completing them in adventure just as any others are earned.

Doesn’t sound so fun when the rewards are reduced to match the risk now does it?

  • @kommodoreyenser
You can make 250k an hour using emissaries. Don't pretend that 10k or a cosmetic wheel for completing a tall tale 5 times actually matters.

You can also play on alliance servers and do tall tales in peace that way. Don’t pretend tall tales are hard to complete with check points and not picking up any loot. Most crews will see you have nothing, no voyage, just doing tall tales and leave you be. The few that do might sink you but Rare gave check points for a reason. Just hop servers away from the aggressive crew, vote the check point, and carry on. 99% of servers are snooze fests these days. I rarely get attacked first and when I do, it is first day noobs who get dispatched easily.

FYI, done all tall tales 5 times, with journals, in adventure. All but the first time was 100% solo sloop BEFORE check points were a thing. So there will be no sympathy from me on the issue. The only real difficulty in this game is other players. The more you learn and grow, that even becomes nothing 99% of the time.

  • I just got camped by 2 people on a sloop who were guarding the last island I needed on the Wild Rose Tall Tale. Really fun and engaging gameplay.

did you communicate clearly and give them space when you approached them?

A common mistake people make is assuming that others can read their intentions. What you can see as hostility they see as defending themselves.

Real important to keep plenty of space between each other and clearly state what you are up to. This doesn't prevent pvp entirely but it can prevent some of it

I've had to take out a lot of ships that I wouldn't otherwise mess with because they just sail up with no communication and don't respect boundaries which puts people in a kill or be killed situation.

  • @wolfmanbush
So I went around the island once and didn't see anyone. When I fought the skeleton for the pendant, I saw a ship heading for mine. I told them I was doing a tall tale and they just ignored me and destroyed my ship that was parked.

  • I was also using a white flag, and had my cannons pointed skyward. Some people just don't care and want to sink ships regardless of whether they have treasure or not or if they're working on a story quest.

The white flag mercy method isn't generally effective. Making yourself look like a mouse only appeals to snakes

Your best tool is speed and efficiency if you want to get something done

If you want to enjoy the story with minimal interruptions just use a rowboat get rid of your ship and nobody will know you're wandering around. Use an online map if you get lost. Just avoid getting too prancer and dancer with your movements so you don't black screen and don't have any voyages down so the skeletons are easy and go about it that way. It's fun and safer

  • @dashopepper3917
I completely agree. This game has a wonderful story in the form of tall tales. Unfortunately though... The game's pvp playerbase has developed the mindset that it's perfectly reasonable to keep others from enjoying said story because "LOL! Pirate game! Git Good!"

And I see you've already met them in this topic. The usual people who patrol these forums shutting down anyone who wants to enjoy the other side of the game free from interference. People like this just value people like you as easy targets to rob and ruin the day of.

There plenty of better ways of farming gold than tall tales and there is no reason why people who want to play them free of interference can't be rewarded for their efforts.

Most of the tall tales require doing them 5 times a piece to fully complete

People aren't going to be getting wrecked every time.

As for the bold people "like me" have no interest in players doing tall tales with little to no valuable loot. Even with some loot and an emissary it's not worth the harpoon and sell time to me.

People get upset about getting attacked and exaggerate how often it happens. The only people that get attacked all the time are those that sit around for long amounts of time all the time. Some of those attacks are just because people enjoy attacking and many of those are because other people need the island and they are tired of waiting. If people kept things going rather than thinking they should be able to squat on an island for hours without any consequence they would have far fewer issues.

  • I actually have suggested this in past, making Tall Tales it own instance. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy SOT being a PvPVE game but a Tall Tale instance to me wouldn’t be a big deal and would not off balance main Adventure in a way that would take SOT away from it core vision in my opinion.

  • That's part of the fun

  • @silverwing-525 Me matey..... please be respectful to your fellow pirates. Failure to do so will result in a time out on the naughty step :D

We can all have our own opinions regarding this subject.

Personally, having check points now is a bonus should there be any trouble, as back in the early days there weren’t any like @KommodoreYenser said making Tall Tales very frustrating should you get sunk mid tale.
