How to hide your ship

  • How do you hide your ship when your on an island you know you'll be at for an extended amount of time? Simple answer, chainshot

When on a sloop angle the sails back to it's original position (how it is when the ship spawns) and you will be able to take your own masts down.
I'm sure this could work for the brig and galleon (haven't tested) but you might have to rely on a island cannon to get the galleon's back sail down.

Of course there are ways to position yourself so that players will have a harder time finding you but using this method players will only find you with a keen eye or a touch of luck.

  • Can you confirm if this even makes a difference for ships out of render distance?

I can't recall ever seeing a ship with its mast down from a long distance (i.e. when sails are rendered in as fully unfurled).

While I think this technique might work for hiding from somewhat nearby ships, its utility would definitely be undercut if it doesn't work on ships approaching from the distance.

I have to question render difference too.

I can tell you having an extra step between shore and sail is deadly tho.

    Sounds like a trap ☠

  • @pithyrumble as long as you still keep an eye in the horizon you're fine, obviously this would work at some islands better than others, crescent Isle, Smugglers Bay, Mermaids hideaway are all good island to tuck your ship away but the sails can still be seen at certain angles, this was even if a ship was rendered it would be harder to spot.

Plus if you come across trouble you should have plenty of time to repair the sail before any ship approaches.

I don't like doing this in case someone sneaks up on me and my mast is down then I can't run if i need to

  • @calicorsaircat sorry, didn't see your post, when I tried this I left my ship at Daggertooth outpost and swam to Shipwreck Bay, I could not see it when docked and the ship was in front of the island.

I also took my masts down at ancient spire and nestled my ship between the two docks, a sloop came in from the Devils roar and either didn't notice it till they got close or didn't care, I cant say which.

If you ever find a friendly crew and their about to sail away ask if you can jump aboard after you try this. I will myself but its so rare.these days to find friendly and trustworthy people hahaha

  • @closinghare208 that is true, it can be quite risky, I wouldn't advise it whilst running an emissary incase of reapers spotting you but if you have to go afk for dinner and know you'll be away from your screen, this might just save you from getting spotted.
