Tips for Solo sloop vs duo sloop

  • To preface, I'm happy to admit that I'm not God's gift to Sea of Thieves when it comes to PvP. Happy to learn how to get better, and normally when push comes to shove I am happy to go down swinging.

That being said, I do a lot of running away as a mainly solo slooper. Brigs and galleons are not a problem as turning into the wind with enough forewarning is straightforward enough.

One thing I seem never able to outrun and outfight are sloops, mostly with two crew members. No matter how I sail, and it seems like no matter how far away they start the chase they always seem to catch up with me, I suspect from my relative lack of efficiency with to-ing and fro-ing steering and sail management.

Tactics to dissuade them rarely seem to work. I sail into storms and Flameheart events, they catch up to me. Throw loot overboard, they don't take the bait. Jump off my own ship with a keg, they normally avoid me and catch up while I am unable to manoeuvre

When combat happens it's pretty much over before it's begun. I'm just asking if it's actually possible to outfox a sloop as a solo player, and if anyone has some words of advice when dealing with duo sloops specifically. Thanks in advance

Unfortunately your survival in this instances is directly proportional to your in game knowledge and sailing abilities.

To beat a sloop 2v1, you need to always get broadside advantage FIRST and if not first then you have to make sure you land more shots than the other guy to take the advantage and keep it.

For most naval battles the key points are wheel most important and cannon shots being a very close second.

If you are over rotating then you are going to get beat, if you are too close then your sail is going to get dropped.

You have to be able to hit shots from far to win in this situations or at least farther away than your opponents can hit.

The sad thing is that even the worst player can hit some shots from relatively close range and good players can hit medium range. You have to be able to hit from medium to far to win in a sloop.

If your sail gets dropped you'll have the time to wheel management and get the sail up and sail away.

Driving tactics take some time and nuisances to learn but sloops are the fastest DIRECTLY into the wind with your sails facing forward against the wind.

This is just a quick tip, but really just work on your wheel control, sails, and cannon shots.

Most players have only 3 positions for the wheel,

    All the way right,
    Center,
    All the way left.

This is just bad and inexperienced.

Most players also always go full billow whenever they can when engaging in naval which isn't always good.

Learn how to death circle and learn how to read how fast your ship is turning and how fast you need to be going.

Having your sails without billow is sometimes better than immediately going full sails every chance you can get.

    Hope this helps a little.
