Name tag view distance?

Have there been any changes or is there a difference between name tag viewability distance between PC and Xbox?
Recently have been getting a lot of messages or party invites whilst in game, mainly asking to join up or beat the forts despite only just appearing online or never having seen anyone else in-game close enough to have seen their tag.
Even before hiding became more common in this update, it's a puzzle how I can be recognised without ever seeing another player close up?
