Is there a way to play with PVP off?

  • I like playing the game from time to time, despite the lack of content... but I just hate the PVP, it ruins the game like it does in GTA V.

  • It's a pvepvp designed game so no

I'll never understand how someone that plays from time to time can seriously believe there is a lack of content in this game

  • It would be better with the choice of PVE or PVP, because I have no interest in PVP.

Welcome friend, and let me put your mind at ease. There is no PvE in this game, there is imply collecting loot so another pirate can attempt to steal it from you.

you see, without the risk of a pirate contesting your haul this game would simply be a sailing simulator. all the "PvE" stuff would be trivial and it wouldn't get your hear racing when your hull was full shinny things.

I see people ask this question a lot and I'm here to tell you that if they gave you a way to play without PVP you would loose interest in it all together very quickly.

I think back to my time on this game and every event worth remembering had at least one of these 2 things 1) another Pirate trying to take my loot or 2) a huge haul that i had to use my wits to protect.

this game is unlike anything i have ever played before because of this. I don't know how long you have played, or what kind of experiences you have had with it, but please try and enjoy it for what it is, i promise you will get a lot more out of the game than if they remove PvP.

Except that the whole idea behind the game is to combine the two, not separate them. So no, it would not be "better" as it would remove the thing that makes the game somewhat unique.

And since you brought up GTA, guess what happens when you enter the "passive mode"? Suddenly you can't do the majority of activities in the game online. Do you people actually play these games or just bring them up because you heard about this feature yet have no idea how it works in practice?

@slannmage Since people love quoting features of other games so much, they should actually make a toggle that is identical to GTA V. Hear me out.

Give it a 5 minute activation delay and cool down every time you turn it on or off where you cannot toggle it again. Activating it dumps all your loot from your ship and any equipped emissary flag into the water as if your ship was not even there. Makes it so you cannot interact with any loot, players, or complete any quest steps.

This would make it identical to a mode in a game EVERY ONE of these requests compares it to. From what I remember of GTA online, the only thing you can do in passive mode is pretty much walk/drive around and explore. No earning money, no heists, no anything.

Doesn’t sound appealing when you try and make it apples to apples now does it?

  • Lack of content? What game are you on.

  • @slannmage The maiden voyage is what you seek, the skeleton is bound to the tree, no pirates will interrupt you and you can fish and explore to your hearts content.

Once you feel like to join us on the open seas, where pirates are free to decide how to respond to the sails they see... set sail and join is in this marvelous paradise where plundering, stealing, fighting and even some jolly good times with a pint of grog are all part of the fun. Just don't forget not to sail around with more than you are willing to lose, watch that horizon and decide how you want to respond .. you know there will be pirates out there! Ooh silly me, you are one as well... so I better watch out before you decide that pile of loot looks rather juicy. If you aren't in for a fight... why aspire to be a pirate and purchase the entrance into a world where it is advertised? May I advise to maybe change your career choice and try being a Viking in the afterlife... Valheim is a pretty remarkable place or one of many of the other worlds where one focuses on the environmental threats.

Ever need a break, the captain of the ferry if the damned is a bit of a grumpy fella ... but he doesn't allow us to pull our weapons when onboard.

  • @slannmage The short answer is "kinda". Just run voyages in The Devil's Roar....no one goes there for the most part. You'll have it to yourself

  • @stevethegent I'm a fan of pvp or pve way more pvp.

And I do agree if you love pve.

The roar is your safe space. Plus all the volcanos and molten rocks you can dream of

Here's the thing about this game: It isn't like any other online multiplayer game. Sea of Thieves is great because there are no PvE servers or passive modes.

The truth is that this game thrives on a predator and prey concept (with some twists). There are those finding the treasure, and those that steal the treasure from the finders. When you separate the predator from the prey, there's no cool heists for the predators and there's no threat or thrill for the prey. There are no exciting alliances or rivalries. No player variety. Both the predator and prey become bored and quit the game.

Every player is meant to wear both the predator and the prey hats from time to time.

When you play Sea of Thieves, the intended experience is not for you to play in only one way and only encounter like minded players. We make unique stories by interacting with the world and the players in the world in many different ways.

Sea of Thieves is really something special because of it's no-limits player interactions in the shared world. It's a shame that people want it to be reduced to a mediocre PvE grinding experience...

You should re-read what OP actually wrote. It seems to imply that they do not like GTA...

Too quick on the draw to defend against GTA's inclusion of a passive-mode... 🤣

  • @burnbacon Sea of Thieves; a cosmetic-only game with a frustratingly small number of cosmetics, despite being 3+ years old.

I still can't comprehend how there is no outfit saving, or even just multiple colors of the same item (i.e. like in Red Dead or GTA).

why do you say that? becouse you logged in for the first time and only could see a limited number of cosmetics? most of them you can't get until you reach pirate legend or perform specific actions.

are you naked ever time you log in? my outfit seams to always be saved. and there are "reskins" they are just considered different items in this game. like you said its a cosmetic game, they have to give something to grind for rite?

P.S. if there is some specific reason to calling out red dead or GTA forgive me, i haven't spent much time on either game.

  • @slannmage honestly the title of these games pretty much tells you they're pvp games .

  • @shifty189 lol I'm actually Day 1, but this also isn't my #1 game so it's very possible that the game does have different colorways/reskins of the same item and I just haven't unlocked them. Like I've personally only seen different colorways on a few items, namely the female crop-tops(?).

As for the saving of outfits, I mean being able to save specific combinations of pirate cosmetics as a singular outfit (pretty much exactly like the costumes the game already has).

So yes, you'll still load in with your previous outfit—but if you wanted to switch to a different one—being able to save complete outfits means you wouldn't have to go through and equip every item, each time. This would just be to save time, and considering it is a cosmetics-only game it seems like a bit of an oversight.

While I don't disagree, it makes me wonder: then why does most of Rare's marketing depict the game as a fun and engaging exploration game?

I feel like like they should be emphasizing how critical spawn-camping and scuttling is to the game instead, not all that PVE Tall Tale stuff which may inevitably turn into PVP anyway.

  • I wonder if the forums for Among Us has people posting, “I really like this game but I wish there was a way I could work on the tasks without worrying about being killed. Also, we need more interesting tasks to do. These are really boring. More PvE content please! But I really love this game and want to see it succeed.”

lol Among Us is the game you're comparing this to? The "social deduction" battle royale-esque game?

I think the main problem with this game is that Rare did include the PVE-aspects in this game, when they probably should have just gone with strictly a nautical-themed battle royale. Had the done so, not only would they have appeased most of the commenters here, people would be fully aware of what they're getting into when they're playing this game.

But Rare did merge the two, so that people who want nothing more than to fight can go after the players who just wanted to play around in this pretty, island setting.

Then on top of that, Rare made spawn-camping and other demoralizing gameplay (typically banned from other games) acceptable, in turn making all of us wide-eyed pirates want a PVE-only.

So there's a reason you don't get similar complaints with Among Us or Call of Duty: players actually know what they're getting into. And at least with CoD, the game's marketing makes it 100% clear what the games are actually about.

  • @slannmage Trust me, you would get bored a lot faster without the paranoia of other pirates taking your loot. Without the pvp, you're playing a fetch quest simulator. It's fun when you're a new player learning the game, but when you do it for 50+ hours grinding for pirate legend you get bored doing the same thing over and over again. Pvp mixes the game up. Try to get a variety of pvp and pve.

Are you complaining that the marketing that features video of ships and players shooting at each other is somehow misleading about the inclusion of PvP? 😂

Nah that stuff is great and actually what originally got me excited about this game (especially the naval battles).

Rare just didn't show all of the spawn-camping; which just so happens to be a "tactic" that Call of Duty and most other games actually try to prevent because players find it so annoying... 🤣😘🤣

  • Ahoy, going to be dropping anchor on this thread as we have a dedicated Mega thread here: https://www.seaofthieves.com/forum/topic/126843/mega-thread-pvp-and-pve-playstyle-discussion

You can read an article by Joe here in regards to Private/Custom Servers.
