New weapon types? Balancing examples. (Dagger, Axe..)

  • Just some thoughts and examples that could potentially enrichen the combat gameplay?
Haven't seen posts about actually making stats for weapons, so I decided to,
    because why not.

Tried not to make them unbalanced/"OP".
Every weapon is compared to the current weapon in the game, Cutlass:

(Side note: I think every weapon should have 3 slashes, just like the Cutlass)

CUTLASS: (Current weapon in the game)

A basic sword with average/medium stats.

(Remember the Player health is 100)

    Damage: 25
    Attack speed: 50
    Block: Yes
    Dodge: Normal
Bonus: 1. Sword lunge. 2. Stops the enemy when slashed.

    DAGGER: (Swift weapon)

Very low damage but slightly faster attack speed? No blocking ability?
Dodging can be done slightly more often?

Bonus: Holding the attack button, you can throw the dagger, but not be able to retrieve it? (Only from the weapon locker) Doing 40% damage?

    Damage: 10
    Attack speed: 60
    Block: No
    Dodge: Slightly faster
    Bonus: Dagger throw (Damage 40)

    MACE/HAMMER: (Defensive weapon)

Slow attacks with low damage? Attacks slightly push the enemy? (Not much) Blocking ability is normal?

Bonus: If you get hit by a melee weapon while you're blocking, only the enemy will get pushed back from 2 hits? (Just like cutlass from 3 hits, but both pushed back)

    Damage: 20
    Attack speed: 40
    Block: Yes
    Dodge: No
Bonus: 1. Attacks slightly pushes enemies. 2. Blocking pushes the enemy from two hits.

    BOARDING AXE/HATCHET: (Bonus weapon)

    Low damage attacks? No blocking?
But an ability to slowly remove planks from a patched ship? (Reverse repairing)
(It makes a loud breaking noise?)

    Damage: 15
    Attack speed: 50
    Block: No
    Dodge: Yes
    Bonus: Plank removing

What do you think! Feel free to comment!

    New notes:
What if we remove the "Boarding Axe" that removes planks and can be used as a weapon?
Replace it with a tool that can't used as a melee weapon?

A tool that takes 1 weapon slot and can be used to remove couple planks? (only 2?)
It can only be acquired from players own weapon locker on his own ship?

    Mmmm, awesome suggestions!

I'm loving the axe concept very much!!

  • @greengrimz Cheers! Though it still might be too "OP"... I might have to change something about it...
What weapons would you like to see in the game? Got any other ideas?

Yeah, being able to remove hammered planks if you board and manage to clear the enemy crew once sounds kind of powerful.

Maybe it could take both weapon slots? And to balance the lack of second weapon make a nice big but slow cleave swing with a good pack of damage.

OR maybe remove the ability to block or dodge while wielding it?

As for other weapons, I guess a hand cannon for cursed cannonballs? Grapple hook? Flame thrower? Throwable knives?

  • @greengrimz Well, it does have slightly less damage... But I was thinking about taking the block away. After all, it's an axe, I don't know if it's possible to block with it anyways lol

Hand cannon for cursed cannonballs sounds awesome, but might be too powerful? Because of the wearyball and danceball etc? ...

    Cool ideas!

Well practically you can, but that's called parrying. Blocking is done with non-weapon items (shield, wall, etc.)

I was rather thinking about being able to shoot the green cursed cannonballs only. The ones that don't affect the ship but the players boarding it.

Although I admit, the other concept does sound very appealing to me. Shooting myself near some coward who's running away, and throw an anchor ball at his ship in case I fail my boarding

  • @jumli7 It's definitely possible to block with an Axe but since there is no guard, you would need to be extremely skilled in order to prevent your hands to be hurt.

I really like the overall concept of implementing new weapons. I don't think that it should be introduced before some problem with melee weapons are fixed but as a thought exercise it's great. :D

The axe here is both super exciting and probably slightly OP (depending on the time it takes to damage a ship with it). Could just be a tool that does little to no damage in order to balance it.

  • the sword and axe player would be unstoppably....i would have it as a consumable iten the axe maybe it brake after you remove one plank or look what you called it a boarding axe not a crowbar ....it need to have more focus on boarding maybe it can stick in to the side of the boat for more boarding opitons ....but as a swingging axe more viking then pirate

  • Nice ideas,

I think that some weapons, like the Boarding Axe, should be obtained similar to the flamethrower skull from world events, and should have a limited amount of uses -- maybe up to 5 boards can be removed? It will simply replace the sword until consumed.

  • why do people think axes are good at removing planks....especially 16th /17 th century BOARDING axe the reality of the real life weapon was designed for climbing and cutting rope.....ive seen this consepted for years and am i missing something about how people understanding how axes works ....

  • @t3ero I don't know. I got the name from a video about someone finding "boarding axe" in the game data/file a year ago, I think.
So I thought it could possibly be a weapon we could see someday?

Maybe an axe, where the other side of the cutting edge has a similar usage as a crowbar? I don't know what those kinda axes are called though... a Two sided hatchet?

(I lowered the Axe damage a bit)

  • @jumli7
aye... i see the idea but i think people are getting the idea mixed up with the moden day fire axe that has been desighed to work like a crowbar/ sleghhammer but it a few hundred years before it time....it just this idea would brake the meta the game 4 players with axes would do more damage then cannonballs.....but people are thinking about a complete diffrent tool to a boarding axe it was a tool isued to every british royal marine in the 17th century as a tool for climing, cutting rope, hammering bolts and hand to hand combat.

  • I'd even say a hatchet over an axe tbh. Dagger is a good idea.

  • I'm going full Mel Gibson in The Patriot with this

  • I like it.
    Would add Montante (longsword) aswell.

"He was the last to fall for he wore European plate armour and kept the Chinese at bay with a heavy montante until he was eventually taken down by a cannon shot."

Context, European vs Chinese naval battle.
