I mean when you repair the hull the hole remains plugged by a wooden plank but the hole gets bigger and bigger, it would be nice to be able to repair the ship completely as if it were new without holes (even paying tot wood planks and only at outposts) also because having large holes is a big disadvantage in case of a fight.
Full ship repair when you reach an outpost
When you repair the ship with planks the holes are fixed. You get bigger holes if you get shot twice on the same spot. There is no such thing as a disadvantage through holes. If you repair the hole, the hole is gone. If you get shot at the same spot again the you get a new hole. The size of the hole depends on the type of damage inflicted, not the fact that there was a hole before. Otherwise the game would punish good players who played a long time without sinking.
Happy sailing!

Negative. Its based on a timer. The damage is cumulative. Small hole turns into medium turns into large. Depending on some damage types it can go instantly to medium or even large.
However lets say you repair a large hole and then moments later run into an island into that same spot. The board will pop off and it will be a large hole still. Same thing with small holes. You repair a small hole and run into an island, now its a medium hole because the damage is again cumulative.
It takes time for the hole to reduce in size. I don't know the exact time but holes stay the same size after being repaired and if hit in the same spot will cause the hole to get bigger.
So technically there is a disadvantage to having large holes however that is on the player to mitigate and I don't believe this to be considered as "unfair". You are not suppose to run into things all over the place or be okay with being shot just because you have planks.
@xultanis-dragon regardless, you should still be able to pay to get them repaired both functionally and cosmetically when you are anchored by a shipwright. That's kind of what shirwrights do.
I'd be okay with the repairs to the outside for cosmetic reasons but not for the insides. It would be difficult to code in properly and if it gets jacked up people could exploit it by sitting at outpost and just hitting the repair button as they are getting shot.
So cosmetic repair I'm okay with.
Plus I asked the dev's that same question in one of their streams if we could have a way to pay to have our boat cosmetically repaired at outposts and just the outside.
They said that they viewed the damage that appears on the boat as a story of the player and that they want the players to be able to tell that story.
I mean its our story but I get it and don't at the same time.
@xultanis-dragon When I got a Tier 3 Hole in the bow of my ship and i hit a rock i get a tier 1 hole on that spot. I can´t remember seeing a wooden plank pop of and a getting a tier 3 hole from ramming. From my point of view there is no such thing as a timer for holes. When the timer reduces the size of a hole shouldn´t the hole disappear after a long time? But it doesn´t. The hole is just a cosmetic thing after patching it up.
Your the first one saying that holes work like that and i couldn´t find anything on SoT Wiki about that.@xultanis-dragon I think it should be optional. Some pirates want to tell their story some of them want a pretty ship. Thats just a lazy reason to not implement that feature.
If I get a chance I'll try to get a video recording of it. I'm almost positive that just because you repaired the hole doesn't mean that it resets. I think if you put a plank on a hole, it takes some time for that hole size to reset. Also the wiki doesn't have everything as its written by players.
I agree on the cosmetic repair. I'm just letting you know what Rare said. Could also be that its difficult to implement withtout a bunch of bugs.
