Renown leveling way too fast?

  • I played for +/- 3 hours yesterday (3x new Merchant voyage, 1x Order of Souls (4 skulls)) and I'm already level 13 in Season One. I only have 1 of 57 trials completed.

Do we need more XP to level our Renown level when we have a higher level? Otherwise many players will be level 100 in 2-3 weeks.

What's the fun of getting level 100 in 2-3 weeks when a Season is for 10 weeks? It's not only about the rewards but also the journey to level 100 itself. I know it's designed for all players but I think it's not that difficult for new players. See some of the deeds of the trials (buy a voyage, vote on a voyage, sail x miles, speak to Larinna, speak to Umbra, set foot on an island, visit a seapost, kill x skeletons). I think new players will easy get level 70 at the end of a season.

There should be a balance between players who are playing Sea of Thieves since launch and new players. A season is designed to keep players play the game for rewards.

Take a look on Rocket League for example. There you have to play for months to get level 100 (20.000XP for each level. I'm not good and not bad in it but I'm level 65 there halfway this season). Same with Call of Duty Warzone.

  • I don't want to have to grind over and over every 3 months to reach level 100.
    If 100 hours played = 100 levels.
    Then that's fine for me.
Rare are already starting to pander to the sweats demands for super expensive items because they have no life outside of playing a video game and have too much gold.
I want to play more than 1 game during my limited spare time, and the chance to still be able to hit max level for about 100 hours invested seems more than reasonable to me.

  • @gulpee-rex rocket league is another game that I play a lot less nowadays, the season passes used to be novel and something to work for but they are now reusing stuff and player soundtracks really, there is a trap that SOT could fall into easily. If I was to criticise the SOT version is the lack of actual rewards which are not gold or doubloons or twitch drops there is not a lot there. But that said I hope it generates interest in the game.

I don't think that this Pass is aimed at the more hardcore base of the game. It's more likely that is essentially a way to address some of the complaints we get from newer and more casual players for ways to progress even if they get sunk by other players.

It likely that this pass won't be any challenge for pirates like you and me but that's ok. we weren't the focus of this addition to the game. This way even someone that plays maybe 2 sessions each week can still reach lvl 100 and won't feel left out and that's a good thing in the grand scheme of things.

  • agree with @NeedSmokes here.

4 hours session brings you maybe to level 15, depends on crewsize, some luck about pvp etc.
so a normal player, plays a session a weekend with friends maybe.
simple math if they play every weekend and be successfull they would be level 150.
Now think about a weekend with no mates or not play at all, think of PvP, bad luck, Solo Sloopers with less time etc...
they have a fair chance to make it this way.

Streamers, YT'ers and people who play 10hours a day or even 5 hours a day 7 days a week are in no way the measure!
they will for sure be level hunderd end of next week already.
But this is not Rare's problem, but a self inflicted problem to make a casual friendly game a serious hobby or even a job etc...

get away with any kind of meaning behind any pixels etc...
That is for people who do nothing else but gaming in their lifes and want that be meaningfull when its totally not.
    Luxury problems i say.

  • I like it. You can play 10 3-hour sessions or 30 1-hour sessions in a 90-day period. Seems fair enough to me.

  • That's perfectly fine, with this i don't have to play every single day for 90 days or 60 days, like this i can take it easy, enjoy in game on 2-3 days pause, playing 2-3 hours and still at the end get all items from the season. Not all people have time play every day whole day.

  • Has anyone gotten high enough in levels to confirm if the levels are all the same amount of renown to level up or whether it scales as you go up?

Mike Chapman said it's about 40-50 hours by their calculations, but a bit quicker with Trials, and it was balanced so it "wasn't an unhealthy amount of time". He also admits that it's kind of aimed at new players and casual players.

I think that's fair enough. There are also new cosmetics for the hardcore players to grind towards if they want, and there will be events throughout the season as well.

  • @realstyli I thought I heard devs say it'd be about 30.... 🤔

  • It’s going too fast definetly, I’m already level 24 on the 2nd day

    @realstyli I thought I heard devs say it'd be about 30.... 🤔

I forgot to link it but it was in the video interview Mike and Joe did with Windows Central

  • Keep in mind the paid tier as well, people are less likely to spend the money if they can't reach the higher levels or are waiting to reach level 100 before buying it.

  • @realstyli I'm currently around lvl 33, not sure about it, maybe I just played a way that got me less renown, but around lvl 28-30 it seemed to get slower.

  • @gulpee-rex i got almost lvl 50 in one day xP

  • It's perfect

I'll hit 100 in a few more days but my casual friends are leveling fast enough to where they are always excited and slow enough to where the joy will drag out for a while making it a lot of fun

and the new merchant missions are awesome not only for a fun adventure but for supplies and for my fish finding on those last few I need

  • Thats great that means people like me who do not have all the time in the world can do this

  • I agree I feel like u should be earning most of ur renown from trials and not other things, and with trials being a lot harder to complete than simply playing the game this will also lower how fast u lvl. I like lvling quickly but there’s a point where the rewards don’t feel special because ur basically just being given them instead of earning them. But I don’t want to really complain just yet because it’s still early and if it’s like rep in this game it’s going to lvl really quickly early and really slowly later

  • @needsmokes
This is aimed at the new / causal base most of us hardcore sot players are nearly 100 already

  • Is it likely that the last 20 levels will be significantly harder to get than the first 20? It is hard to know with the way you seem to get rep for basically just playing the game.

  • Personally, I wouldn't want progress to slow down at higher renown levels... I prefer it to be static across the board.

  • I much prefer this to burning myself out completing time-limited content and then not touching the game for a month. I don't have nearly as much time as I once did and this feels balanced enough. I'll actually be a bit upset if the levels take longer later in the season.

    Your not hardcore.
I probably earn the same as you as we play, the only difference is, the amount of time we play the game.

A few hours a day gaming is a healthy recommended amount.

How many hours are you sat still playing a day to almost be level 100?

    This doesn't make you hardcore.
Just means you have nothing better to do.

  • @needsmokes i made almost lvl 50 in 12 hour playtime so i guess it's between 20 and 30 hours to get to lvl 100

  • @needsmokes said in Renown leveling way too fast?:

Was this recommended by the same Doctor that recommends 7 diet cokes a day as moderation?

  • @wolfmanbush afaik everything beyond 2hrs is unhealthy :)

not that i play 3-5hrs a ssession , but unlikely it's more and it's not every day for sure, more of 3-4/ 7 days.

  • @needsmokes
Be close to 30hrs nah its called playing games all weekend after a big week of work

  • Definitely don’t think its levelling too fast. Having played the game since launch I was worried about it being yet another grind after the grind to PL and then the grind to level up PL itself. Maybe they’ll tweak it slightly based on how this first season goes. But honestly if the pass leads to more content for us then I’m happy with whatever.

Admittedly I do think its a shame a lot of the trials seem to be re-hashed challenges and fairly basic but its a good intro for new players.

Also, to comment on someones point regarding the expensive items in the game - I don’t see that as pandering to the “sweats”. Like I said I’ve been playing since day one, only play for a couple of hours at a time but have built up substantial hoards of currency, nice to have some stuff to spend it on!

  • @stundorn just turned 100 now lol

  • @realstyli taken me 3/4 days mate to reach 100 and i had 2/3 days off it :)

  • Eh. I share the opinion that the pass isn’t aimed at those who regularly use the forums. We clearly care a lot more about the game, and are likely to put in that extra effort. I bet Rare wanted the pass for people who didn’t even know there was a website, and just wanted some steady progression. I like the system, it’s not overwhelming and it’s a good start for Season 1. And if you really want something grindy, there’s the Champion of Souls events. If you need me, I’ll be killing skellys in the Roar...

  • @gulpee-rex

What you're going to see is lots on Reddit and Social Media will have completed this in a matter of days and weeks. Seasons progression is balanced for casual players and dedicated veterans. Don't be surprised if this doesn't get changed, as they will be looking at the average time to completion across the entire playerbase. What you see on social media is the tip of the ice berg.

Most battle passes out there shake out this way anyway. Some complete it in days, others will take the full length of time or miss it entirely.

  • It's nice to know that Sea of Thieves has learned from the mistakes of others - the last thing any gamer needs is another Star Wars Battlefront 2 fiasco. 😅

  • @gulpee-rex some of us are only able to play for an hour or two a couple times a week. It's good to know I have a chance of unlocking everything while playing in my free time after work when my kids are in bed.
