Triangular sails

  • These can be free (just like the ships) or upgrades that cost gold, up to rare's decision. The triangular sail is the exact opposite of the normal sail: it allows you to move faster against the wind, but it slows you down if you use it in favor of the wind. This could be super useful because the wind hates me. It could replace the normal sail (an option) or you can have both sails in your ship at the same time, up to rare's decision again.

PS: the "Lucky Rover" is always the unlucky ship in the arena

No. Sails are already balanced between ships. This would only be throwing a wrench into a perfectly good working cog.

  • @galactic-geek What if it was purely cosmetic?

That would be impossible - triangular sails offer up a far less obstructed view. They would become the meta.

  • @galactic-geek Boring.

I suppose, but only if you take the game super competitively. Some people use pistols that aren't great to aim with. Some use snipers and blunders that obscure your vision a lot, or have a coloured scope. Some people don't run tattered sails for the slight advantage. Although I do acknowledge that triangular sails would grant a much larger advantage than anything I've listed.

I dunno, I guess I'm okay with throwing the balance a little out of whack if it mean we can see some really interesting and diverse cosmetics. I'm a big fan of this, but I've no doubt that you'd say it would be unfair, which it would, just not to a degree that I personally would create an argument about.

  • @typicalink500 I would love to se changeable ship rigs as a way to diversify ship performance. However, @Galactic-Geek is correct that the sails and ship performances are carefully balanced, so any new setups would have to be balanced as well. For instance, it would not do for a galleon or brig to slap on lateen sails and be faster than a square rig sloop against the wind, because that takes away one of the major advantages of the sloop. So while I think it would be a cool idea it may be unworkable due to balance.

Also lateen rigs usually run for and aft, so it would take more work graphically and in the physics engine to get them right than just designing a different shape sail.

  • @galactic-geek not if they're used with the normal sails, like normal sails where they use to be and triangular sails in the front

So you just want to add more sails? That does the opposite and obscures too much! Pirates alresdy get upset wuth not being able to see past the bottom of regular sails . Can you imagine how livid they would be with 1 dead center that they could do nothing about?
